A nine-game stretch against the National League’s three last-place teams — Miami Jordan Staal Jersey , Cincinnati and San Diego — seemed like a chance for the St. Louis Cardinals to fatten their record and make a surge up the National League Central ladder.

Instead, St. Louis wasn’t even able to tread water. It went 4-5 in that span, including consecutive 4-2 losses Tuesday and Wednesday night to a San Diego Padres team that currently looks like a cellar-dweller in name only, having won five straight series.

Now the Cardinals (36-30) will have to get their work done against better teams. Beginning with the opener of a three-game series Friday night in Busch Stadium against the Chicago Cubs (38-27), they play 19 straight games against teams that currently have winning records.

What’s more, they’ll play this weekend without their most consistent hitter, first baseman Jose Martinez, who leads the team in all three Triple Crown categories (.321 average, 10 HR, 42 RBIs). He’ll miss the series on paternity leave in Venezuela.

“It’s a big series for us Justin Faulk Jersey , but that’s a monumental life event,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said.

Luke Voit will be recalled from Double-A Springfield to replace Martinez on the roster. The big right-handed hitter could get a couple of starts this weekend as Chicago will trot out left-handed starters Jon Lester and Jose Quintana.

Lester (7-2, 2.22 ERA) gets the call in the series opener, which, if this year’s form is any indication, may become a pitcher’s duel. He’ll be opposed by right-hander Michael Wacha (8-1, 2.47), who will seek his ninth straight win.

Lester is coming off a 2-0 win Saturday at Wrigley Field against Pittsburgh, allowing only one hit in seven innings with two walks and five strikeouts. In his last eight starts, Lester is 5-1 with a 1.63 ERA Justin Williams Jersey , and he hasn’t permitted a run in his two starts this month.

He’s 1-0 in two starts this year against the Cardinals, permitting only two earned runs in 11 1/3 innings. In his career against St. Louis, Lester is 6-4 with a 2.22 ERA in 16 starts, limiting hitters to a .220/.282/.344 slash line.

Wacha hasn’t lost since March 31 against the New York Mets and is building a case for his second All-Star appearance. In his last start on Saturday, Wacha beat Cincinnati 6-4, permitting four hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and six whiffs.

He has faced the Cubs once this year, working 5 1/3 innings and yielding two runs (one earned) on May 6 in a no-decision as the Cardinals won 4-3 in 14 innings. But Wacha has been rocked most of his career against Chicago, as he’s 4-7 with a 6.12 ERA in 17 outings, including 15 starts.

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has had his way with Wacha, going 18-of-40 in his career with three homers. Chicago teammates Ian Happ Noah Hanifin Jersey , Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras also have two homers each against Wacha.

The Cubs lost two of three in Milwaukee this week, suffering 4-0 and 1-0 losses in the series’ final two games and falling 1 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the Central.

“We almost should be grateful we won one of three,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said. “We played well the first game, then shutout, shutout.”

HITTING BRAVES

Among the many things the Atlanta Braves have done right on their way to leading the National League East this season, they’ve been getting hits. The Braves began their series against fellow division leader Milwaukee on Thursday night with three of the top four hits leaders in the NL, with outfielder Nick Markakis (108) leading the way and infielder Ozzie Albies (102) and Freddie Freeman (101) close behind in third and fourth, respectively. It’s the first time in franchise history the team has had three players reach 100 hits prior to the All-Star game, and the Braves will continue their series when Mike Foltynewicz and Freddy Peralta face off.

GOING GRAY

In a season full of highlights for the New York Yankees, right-hander Sonny Gray has been one of the team’s biggest disappointments in his first full season with club. Gray will try and rebound from his worst start of the season when the Yankees begin a weekend series in Toronto against the Blue Jays. After being acquired from Oakland last season Youth Derek Stepan Jersey , Gray is 5-6 with 5.44 ERA this season and is coming off an 11-0 loss to Boston last weekend in which he allowed six runs in only 2 1/3 innings.

CHICAGO SEEING RED

Chicago has won six straight games since that rough patch, and has the opportunity to make amends with the Reds when the two teams begin a weekend series at Wrigley Field. Mike Montgomery (3-2) starts for Chicago, and Tyler Mahle (6-6) takes the mound for Cincinnati.

ACE OF NEW YORK

Despite the struggles of the New York Mets for much of the season, Jacob deGrom has been one of the NL’s most dominant starters. The right-hander leads the league with his 1.84 ERA and will be back at work when he takes the mound against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. He has allowed three runs in each of his last two starts, the first time he’s allowed three or more runs in back-to-back games since April.

SUMMER KING

Seattle Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez (8-6) put together his best full month of the season in June, posting a 3.71 ERA in six starts and lowering his overall ERA from 5.83 to 5.11 in the process. The 2010 Cy Young award winner will try and extend his improved performance into July when he starts in an interleague game against the visiting Colorado Rockies.

The Philadelphia Phillies have placed right-hander Vince Velasquez on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised forearm a day after he made a dazzling throw with his left hand.

Velasquez was hit just below the elbow on a liner back up the middle by Washington’s Adam Eaton in the second inning Saturday. He picked up the ball and threw it left-handed to first base to get the final out. He then went down Kyle Connor Jersey , riling in pain and clutching his right arm.

”I feel a lot better than yesterday,” Velasquez told reporters Sunday. ”A lot more movement going on and just continue doing my work stuff that I need to do, lower half, and then continue to doing my core and all that stuff I need to do and go from there.”

This is the fourth trip to the disabled list for Velasquez in his three seasons with Philadelphia.

Also Sunday, the Phillies reinstated right-handed reliever Pat Neshek from the 10-day DL, recalled righty Jake Thompson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and optioned left-hander Zac Curtis to Lehigh Valley.

Neshek, who was re-signed by the Phillies during the offseason, had been on the disabled list since opening day with a forearm injury.

CLEVELAND — With Cleveland’s pitching staff in chaos, the Indians will try to regroup Sunday and avoid a three-game sweep by the Minnesota Twins.

Minnesota has won the first two games of the series while roughing up Cleveland’s top two starting pitchers, Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco. The Twins have won five in a row against their American League Central rivals, outscoring the Indians 36-16.

The Indians’ 9-3 loss Saturday was a costly one. Carrasco was knocked out of the game in the second inning when he was hit on the right elbow by a line drive off the bat of Joe Mauer. Carrasco went to a local hospital for tests after the game.

“It hit him right on the elbow. He was hurting,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “They’re still doing some scans. Right now, they are calling it a contusion and the hope is that’s all it is. We’ll know more tomorrow.”

Carrasco’s early exit caused Francona to use most of his bullpen Mark Scheifele Jersey , including right-hander Adam Plutko, who was scheduled to start Sunday. But those plans changed.

Shane Bieber will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus to start Sunday in place of Plutko.

Bieber made a spot start for the Indians, his major league debut, on May 31, coincidentally against the Twins. The Indians won the game 9-8, but Bieber was not involved in the decision. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Bieber has been the Indians’ top minor league pitcher in the first half of the season. In a combined 12 starts at Columbus and Double-A Akron, Bieber is 6-1 with a 1.29 ERA. One of those wins was a rain-shortened seven-inning no-hitter for Columbus.

Bieber will have his hands full with a red-hot Minnesota lineup, led by outfielder Eddie Rosario, who has been a one-man wrecking crew against Cleveland this year. On Saturday, Rosario was 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. All four of his hits came on the first pitch.

Against the Indians this year, Rosario is batting .471 (16-for-34) with six home runs and 11 RBIs.

“They are in a special place (offensively) now Mathieu Perreault Jersey ,” Francona said. “Rosario, the first pitch you throw him he’s just whacking it. We need to throw him some pitches out of the zone. He’s hitting everything. They are a good hitting team.”

The Twins’ Sunday starter will be right-hander Jake Odorizzi (3-3, 4.19 ERA), who has not won since May 8. In six starts since, he is 0-1 with a 4.70 ERA, although a lack of run support has been part of the problem.

The Twins scored three runs or fewer in four of those six Odorizzi starts, the last of which came June 12 against the Detroit Tigers. The Twins won the game 6-4. Odorizzi got a no-decision, pitching five innings, allowing two runs and four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Odorizzi earned a no-decision in his last start against Cleveland on May 31. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) and seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In six career starts against Cleveland, Odorizzi is 1-2 with a 6.33 ERA.

Joe Mauer didn’t receive any gifts for returning from a lengthy stint on the disabled list.

No Carl Soderberg Jersey , his reward was an immediate matchup against two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber.

”Yeah, welcome back, right?” Mauer said with a laugh.

The six-time All-Star returned to the lineup on Friday after missing 25 games with a strained neck and concussion-like symptoms sustained when he was injured diving for a foul ball last month.

And while facing Kluber might not be an ideal first step back, the struggling Twins, who have one of the league’s weakest offenses, were thrilled to have Mauer back in their lineup.

”It’s good for any manager to have a chance to put a guy like Joe’s name down there,” said manager Paul Molitor, who had Mauer batting first against Kluber in the opener of a three-game series against the AL Central-leading Indians. ”Yeah, he’s in a good place, he’s excited to be here and we welcome him back. Hopefully, he can give us a little bit of a boost.”

The Twins came in seven games under .500 and batting just .238 as a team. They also entered the series with only three runs in the past 19 innings.

That’s not ideal against Kluber, who is 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA against the AL Central this season.

”Obviously, he’s one of the best in the game,” Mauer said. ”That’s the big leagues. You’re going to face the best night in and night out. It’s a tough matchup first game, but the one tomorrow (Carlos Carrasco) is pretty tough, too. I’m just excited to be back.”

Mauer has been symptom-free for a week. He went hitless in 10 at-bats over three games in a rehab stint with Triple-A Rochester Joel Armia Jersey Kids , but the three-time batting champion feels ready to go.

”It’s been going good,” said Mauer, who was batting .283 with one homer and 11 RBIs when he got hurt. ”Obviously, I went down there and got in a couple of games and did everything I had to do to get back here. Mauer said he didn’t have to make any diving stops in the field at Rochester, and that he won’t alter his game just because of the recent injury.

Lance Lynn gets the start Friday night when the Minnesota Twins continue a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Target Field.

Lynn’s 2018 season has not gone anywhere near the way he may have envisioned when he hit the free-agent market for the first time last fall, ending a six-year run with the Cardinals.

Instead of landing a lucrative, multi-year deal he went unsigned until late in spring training, when he agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with the Minnesota Twins — approximately $5.4 million less than he would have earned under the Cardinals’ one-year qualifying offer he turned down last November.

After an abbreviated spring camp, Lynn got off to an abysmal start. He went 0-3 in his first five outings, posting an 8.37 ERA in those contests but finally got into a groove when the calendar flipped to May. He went 5-2 with a 2.88 ERA over his next nine turns.

Lynn, who is 5-7 with a 5.49 ERA for the season, continues his hit-or-miss season Friday after losing his last two starts. He is fresh off his worst outing of the season when he allowed seven runs on five hits and three walks, failing to get out of the second inning in an 11-10 loss at Wrigley Field on Sunday.

Cubs pitcher Jon Lester homered off Lynn during a disastrous second inning that also included Lynn failing to cover first on a routine grounder Josh Morrissey Jersey , which kept the inning going long enough for the Cubs to take a big lead.

“We gave them an extra out,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said of Lynn’s gaffe. “I think that was the biggest thing that stuck out to me. An offense like that, outs when you don’t get them, that was problematic to me. The arithmetic says that was an extra five runs because of that particular play.”

Lynn is 1-1 with a 7.30 ERA in three games (two starts) versus Baltimore.

The Twins snapped a six-game losing streak in the series opener Thursday night and, in turn, extended the misery for the Orioles, who have lost three in a row and 10 of their last 11.

They’ll turn to Dylan Bundy (6-7, 3.75 ERA) to snap the skid. Baltimore plans to activate the right-hander from the disabled list Friday and get him back on the mound for the first time since suffering a sprained left ankle June 23.

He went 3-7 with a 4.46 ERA through his first 12 starts of the season but got hot in June, posting a 1.98 ERA while going 3-0 in four starts before suffering the injury while running the bases after collecting his first big league hit.

His return comes as the Orioles need to decide a course of action ahead of the trade deadline. At 24-62, Baltimore owns the worst record in baseball and will almost certainly be a seller as the deadline approaches.

The 25-year-old Dylan is in his third full big league season and still has three more years of team control, making him an intriguing candidate for a motivated buyer.

The Twins’ Logan Morrison has two home runs in 15 at-bats versus Bundy, who is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA in four career games (three starts) versus Minnesota. Bundy faced the Twins in his first start of this season, giving up five hits over seven shutout innings in Baltimore’s 3-2 victory on March 29.

Take the First Few Pitches
I have played The Show for over 10 years straight now, and the nerfing of early-count hitting has been palpable and frustrating over the last few entries. Well-timed hits that almost assuredly would be no-doubter home runs or extra-base hits ripped down the line suddenly devolve into weak choppers or soft fly outs (this year, it’s line drives right at the infielders). The worst part is, and this only happens after you become comfortable with working counts, sometimes a meatball is too juicy to take and you betray your patience. And what happens? The ball plops onto the outfield grass for a clean single. Suddenly, you feel like you’ve cheated yourself out of so many first-pitch meatballs. That’s just The Show baiting you into revitalizing your early hacks. Go ahead and swing aggressively at the first two pitches and see where it takes you even on Rookie. My solution: spare yourself the frustration and take the first two pitches. I cannot recommend this enough until The Show’s punishments for early swinging get revamped. You’ll either be at 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2, and all three of those breed much clearer hitting strategies than a pitcher trying to set the tone at 0-0 or even 0-1. Just be wary on 2-0 counts as many hitters will try and square up a fastball early only to find that the pitcher is dropping something off-speed into the zone. Baseball is a cruel game.

Leave the PCI Alone At First
Remember that simply timing pitches with a mere contact swing and no PCI movement can feed directly into the no-doubter home run animation. This can happen with players of any hitting stats as well (mine came by way of Breakout Ryan Raburn (against a righty), Live Jonathan Schoop, and Impact Veteran Babe Ruth). As tantalizing as it is to swing heavy and early (who doesn’t love destroying the baseball), this can be done without ever moving the PCI. Do not treat MLB The Show 18 like MVP Baseball 2005 and try and use it to aim your swing. The Show’s default settings are based mostly upon ability and timing. Once you get more comfortable working counts and seeing the ball, then you should overcommit with the PCI to try and bloop singles to the opposite field or crush an inside pitch. That is when MLB The Show 18 shines its brightest, but it takes a bit of adjusting. Establish a comfortable rhythm at the plate before moving the PCI around, and when you think you’re ready, start by moving it up slightly to obliterate fastballs higher in the zone.

Train Your Eye
Much like my inability to take only one donut when a co-worker brings in an unnecessarily large collection of donuts in the morning, I cannot lay off of off-speed pitches an inch below the strike zone or fastballs that catch the very bottom. Thankfully, MLB The Show 18 has one beneficial feature that is very easy to overlook: Custom Practice. You can set any count, any hitter and any pitcher in a perpetual loop. Set yourself up with an 0-2 count and a pitcher that commands the zone that you struggle hitting and go to town. This is an exceptionally helpful way of training your eye and improving your plate appearances. After all, MLB players take BP and participate in simulated games, so why should you be exempt?

Save the Power Swing for the Right Moments
Imagine that your electricity is out and you can only open the fridge so many times before all of the food goes bad. Should you really waste it to grab and put back 10 different sandwich ingredients? Or should you use it to quickly snag that half-eaten tub of Blue Bell cookies and cream ice cream (ice cream’s all-time WAR leader) that runs a high risk of melting? You should not take a power swing with Breakout Emilio Bonifacio on a 2-0 count with the bases empty just as you should not waste precious refrigerated air making an elaborate sandwich. However, you most certainly should enjoy the power swing with Live Khris Davis with the bases empty on a 2-0 count just as you should live lavishly eating that ice cream. As tempting as it is to smash the life out of the ball at every at-bat, the power swing dramatically shrinks the PCI and should really only be used when the player feels comfortable enough to square up the pitch. The Show seems to reward players for patiently working deeper counts, so keep that in mind as well.

"China is a leader in the rapid switch to clean fuels and investment in speed trains," Jong noted.


Robust policies and legislation alongside infrastructure development are crucial to promote green transportation across cities in China and the developing world.


Jong stressed that a paradigm shift is an imperative to help tackle traffic congestion and the attendant air pollution in cities across China and Africa.


"It is possible to re-invent mobility in cities, if people switch from heavy use of cars to cycling and walking," Jong said.

"Tourism is the main economic activity of our country, is the largest employer," Estalella told Xinhua about the position of tourism in the Spanish economy, an economy with more than 5 million people unemployed in the second quarter of the year according to Spain's Statistical Office (INE).


According to a report by the Institute of Economic and Social Analysis, between 2001 and 2013 employment linked to the sector represented an average of 10.9 percent of the total jobs in Spain, or an average of two million people employed.


Between 2001 and 2007, years of economic expansion, more than 500,000 jobs were created within the tourism sector.


During the recession (2008-2013), although about 100,000 jobs were destroyed between 2008 and 2012, the figures were less negative than in other sectors of the economy, and in 2013 the sector started to register positive figures, the report highlights.


An economist from IESE Business School in Barcelona, Juan Roure, confirmed this importance, saying "Not only in Spain, but in general, the tourism sector has a great impact on the economy, directly and indirectly in a number of subsectors," such as in real estate, hotel industry, catering, travel, airline, buses, etc.


According to German Torres, from the Mesa Turismo (an association that encompasses all sectors of tourism), success is based on providing "a very good product, well diversified and at reasonable prices".

However, despite the success and the great resilience of the sector to the crisis, it has not been immune, especially because of the fall in domestic tourism.


"Before the crisis in 2008, roughly 50 percent of the tourists in Spain were Spanish and 50 percent were foreigners. In 2013, 70 percent were foreigners and 30 percent were Spanish and the number of foreigners had not increased that much," Estalella told Xinhua.


The drop in domestic tourism was particularly noted in areas of Spain where foreigners usually do not go. However, nowadays, the recovery of domestic tourism is a reality.


According to the CEHAT, in the summer (July, August and September) the number of Spaniards who traveled has increased by 5 or 10 percent compared to last year, spending more days and spending more money.


Roure confirmed this trend: "Outbound tourism has recovered, the level we have had this year we had not had in recent years."

DUBAI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Smart payment systems pose increasing challenges to customer retention and profit margins of retail banks globally, financial experts said on Monday.


The mobile internet subscription is expected to globally rise from around 2 billion to 4 billion by 2018, according to a study presented at the fifth Middle East Banking Innovation Summit 2015 held in Dubai.


"This will lead to disruptive developments for many retail banks," the study, conducted by consultancy McKinsey, showed.

Cars are also moving into the digital payment scene, McCrea added.

"We expressed our serious concerns over recent and ongoing developments which have eroded trust and confidence, increased tensions and which may have the potential to undermine peace, security and stability in the South China Sea," the ASEAN communiqué had said, without mentioning China by name.


The retraction indicated disagreements within ASEAN and was worth further negotiations with China, Liu Feng, an expert on Chinese maritime issues, told the Global Times.


The disparities between China and ASEAN include China's opposition to a possible joint statement issued by ASEAN on the future ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the progress of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and construction activities on islands and reefs, a Beijing-based expert who requested anonymity, told the Global Times on Tuesday.


ASEAN believed in the necessity to issue the statement as the Philippines is a member, the expert said, adding that ASEAN countries expected a faster completion of the code while China insisted on the comprehensive implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea before promoting the code.


"But there is still room for discussion between China and ASEAN because the two sides have more in common," Liu said.


ASEAN officials did not release the so-called communiqué to the reporters, and the foreign ministers have not announced the document on any public platform. Of course, division games are never easy, but with Atlanta desperately needing a win to keep their season alive, it will be even more difficult for Tampa Bay to ge a win on the road this week. In most cases, divisional matchups usually come down to the fourth quarter, so Tampa Bay will need to play 60 minutes of football. Not 45, not 30, not 25, but a full 60 minute game if they want to improve to 3-2, and more importantly, 2-0 in the division. It sort of feels like the bye week came at the perfect time for the Buccaneers. After the loss to Chicago, many fans were jumping off the ledge, but the early bye week gave them an opportunity to review what went wrong and hopefully fix it, or at least adjust in some capacity. Head Coach Dirk Koetter spoke to the media today following practice and commented on what he did during the bye week to improve this football team.“As a coaching staff, when you look at everything, you’re going to look at until you think you’ve got it figured out – whether you do or you don’t. You’re going to try to. We’ll try to implement some things that we did Authentic Chandler Catanzaro Jersey ,” Koetter said. “I’m not going to really come out and say what they are, but we’ll try to implement some things and get them ready for this week in Atlanta.”They not only needed to figure out what went wrong, but they need to implement new things this week. We won’t know what that is until Sunday, but something had to be done, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Koetter implemented an interesting tactic this past week that will only benefit this team moving forward. Before the players went on their mini-vacation, he asked each guy to give some feedback on the first four games of the season and how they can improve in certain aspects. This is an excellent idea by a coach who is realistically coaching for his job this season. “In a couple of areas. I’m not going to tell you the areas, but just some areas that I felt like I wanted to see. When you’re a college coach and guys aren’t leaving town, you from time-to-time meet with every guy on your team. Well, I didn’t have time with everybody leaving last Tuesday for six days to meet with every guy,” Koetter said. “I put together just a very short thing that I asked the guys to give me some feedback and they did an awesome job. I really appreciate their honesty because sometimes honesty can be self-defeating – make yourself look bad – but I appreciate their honesty. The communication I think both ways – player-coach, coach-player – was good.”I don’t recall ever hearing this strategy from Koetter and his staff, but it should help. With that being said, it once again comes down to coaches adjusting to the recommendations and playing to their players strengths. If the same sort of defense is called against Atlanta, expect similar results that we’ve seen through the first four games of the season.We’ve seen it time and time again on defense and their failure to adjust, but I’m sure the comment cards were long and detailed for defensive coordinator Mike Smith. Let’s see if Koetter and company will respond to the comment cards so the Buccaneers can get their 2018 season back on track.

Healthy and eligible Elliott figures to be factor in NFL rushing race after leading league as rookie two years ago. Elliott still led league in yards rushing per game during suspension-marred season. Prescott wasn't as good at protecting ball year after rookie record for passer rating. Cowboys want him to feed off Elliott-powered running game. Dallas believes young talent in secondary can help defense make difference. Cowboys could use repeat from DeMarcus Lawrence, who finished second in NFL with 14陆 sacks last season and will play on franchise tag. Three days of joint workouts with Jets after two camps without outside competition should help Redskins prepare better than years past.EXPECTATIONS: Winning season is realistic if Smith is as good as or better than Cousins and running game gets on track. It was so bad second-year coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese were fired in early December after QB Eli Manning was benched. Will 3-4 bring out the best?EXPECTATIONS: Teams generally improve with new coaching staff. That said, Giants have long way to go. Much depends on how quickly they pick up new systems. Staying healthy and happy this year will help. If Barkley lives up to expectations, Beckham bounces back, and defense clicks, Giants can make playoffs. It's long shot, but don't forget this franchise won 11 games in 2016. The Buccaneers found themselves back in the win column on Sunday, beating the Browns in overtime, 26-23, at Raymond James Stadium. There were some unlikely heroes throughout the afternoon and although the rookies wouldn’t be considered among the game’s heroes, some of them did make a bigger impact this week. It’s time to look at how Tampa Bay’s 2018 class performed in week seven. RB Ronald Jones IIIn last week’s rookie recap, I talked about how frustrating Ronald Jones had been through the first six weeks (three of which he spent on the inactive list). After his performance on Sunday, things are looking up. There was a lot to like about Jones’ day. Even if he was still somewhat inconsistent, there were more bursts of hope this week. He ran six times for 13 yards, which isn’t anything special. But he did have a long of nine and later scored his first NFL touchdown. In the passing game, he caught his only target for a 15-yard pickup. The second-rounder appears to be showing that he might be ready for some more touches. Truthfully, he might need them to get into more of a rhythm with this offense. In Sunday’s game, he took 29 offensive snaps, which was 31 percent of the offense’s total.There were improvements in Jones’ game for the most part, but there were some mistakes— one of which could have been costly. With the Bucs on their side of the field in overtime, Jameis Winston threw an interception. Head coach Dirk Koetter later said that the interception was made possible by someone running the wrong route. By the looks of it, that someone might have been Jones. He cut left instead of right, which brought the linebacker into the throwing lane. If it was a timing route for the receiver, there’s really nothing Winston could have done about it. The Tampa Bay defense stepped up on the next possession, making the turnover insignificant. Even still, those are the types of things that will keep Jones from getting more snaps. With Peyton Barber potentially banged up, the Bucs will need their rookie running back to be ready for an increased workload— both physically and mentally. When asked about Jones on Monday, Koetter said it’s clear that progress is being made: CB Carlton DavisCarlton Davis returned from injury in week seven after missing last week’s game in Atlanta. In the first game under interim defensive coordinator Mark Duffner, Davis played well. He got 65 snaps (96 percent) on defense and stayed consistently effective in both zone and man coverage. He was tasked with keeping up with Jarvis Landry for part of the afternoon and held the stud receiver in check for the most part. Overall, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield threw for just 215 yards against a pass defense that had been horrible under Mike Smith. Duffner may not be the reason for the secondary playing the way it did, but for whatever reason, the back half of the defense put up its best performance of the year. Davis was a major part of that. The Auburn product did an excellent job of reading Mayfield, especially on a key play in overtime. On third down, Davis dropped into coverage, read the route of tight end David Njoku and jumped at it for a pass breakup that forced a punt:Davis could emerge as a top performer on Tampa Bay’s defense very soon if he gets put in the right situations. DT Vita VeaVita Vea does a lot of really nice things that don’t show up in the box score. Tampa Bay’s first-rounder was effective again on Sunday, playing a higher volume of snaps with Gerald McCoy out. He was in for 38 snaps (56 percent), racking up one tackle. But again, it was the eye test that determined the success of Vea’s day against Cleveland. He continued to get excellent push up the middle and just missed his first NFL sack in the second half. On his lone tackle, he got solid push before the ball-carrier escaped in space. Vea didn’t give up on the play, chasing down the runner and bringing him down about 15 yards down the field: Again, not much of what he did well will show up on a stat sheet, but Tampa Bay has to like what it getting from Vea right now. With McCoy likely to miss more time, it wouldn’t be surprising to see No. 50 play even more snaps in the coming week or two. For someone who missed all of training camp, preseason and the first few weeks of the season, the No. 12 overall pick is progressing awfully well. (Going forward, the argument as to whether he was worth being selected in that slot will not be a part of the weekly rookie recap. The fact is, he is a Buccaneer and is coming along well in the middle of the defensive line.)The best of the restM.J. Stewart played 53 snaps (78 percent) on defense and totaled five tackles (four solo)... Jordan Whitehead had three tackles (all solo), playing 23 snaps (34 percent). He appeared to still be a little banged up, which could be the reason he wasn’t all that involved... Linebacker Jack Cichy entered the game on defense after Kwon Alexander went down with an ACL injury. He recorded a tackle before unfortunately leaving the game with an injury of his own. It was reported Monday that he will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL... Justin Watson played two snaps (two percent) on offense and 24 snaps (73 percent) on special teams... Alex Cappa and Shaun Wilson were once again inactive.
