Roster Watch: Craig Mager is like a cockroach that just won’t die. You can bench him Cheap Jahleel Addae Jersey , banish him to the practice squad, even give his job to an undrafted free agent, and he just won’t go away. And, to the dismay of many, it seems Mager is poised to last at least another season with the Los Angeles Chargers.Yes, you read that right. With two weeks remaining in the preseason, and the week three “dress rehearsal” looming this weekend, the team continues to give every indication that Craig Mager has a virtual vice grip on what figures to be the fifth and final spot on the cornerback depth chart.As excited as the fans were about undrafted free agents Brandon Facyson and Tony Brown entering camp, the coaches have been even more excited about the perceived new-and-improved Craig Mager. They have repeatedly praised him for the way he handled his demotion to the practice squad in 2017, and Ron Milus Cheap Denzel Perryman Jersey , Gus Bradley and Philip Rivers have all praised his improved attitude and technique. You might say they’ve been effusive in their praise.They’re all but telling us he’s going to make the cut, folks.And, while I don’t remember Mager so much as being targeted in either preseason game, that probably only helps his case. I mean, as bad as he’s been in the past; it’s hard for him to do anything to hurt his cause if teams don’t challenge him. This is particularly true if the coaching staff is actively looking for a reason to carry him.What’s more, if the preseason rotations in the defensive backfield are any indication, Facyson and Brown aren’t really even nipping at Mager’s heels for that fifth spot on the depth chart, either.It looks to me like Jeff Richards, who spent all of last season on the Chargers practice squad, is currently the sixth corner on the depth chart Tyrell Williams Jersey , and might also be the only player with a chance to unseat Mager. When I saw George Iloka got cut by the Bengals - apparently a salary cap casualty - I wondered if Mike Zimmer would attempt to sign him.After all he made an attempt a couple years ago, and sure enough he did - only this time successfully.Signing Iloka looks more to be an opportunity signing, rather than a need signing, as the Vikings have All-Pro Harrison Smith, and Andrew Sendejo - who is coming off his best season - as returning starters.So how does Iloka fit as a Viking?WHAT ILOKA BRINGS TO THE VIKINGSFirst, coming from Cincinnati - which still runs a Zimmer defense - Iloka is well versed in the Vikings defensive scheme.Zimmer and Iloka both said he was familiar with around 80-85% of the Vikings’ defensive calls, so that’s about as close to plug-and-play as you can get for a free-agent signing.Iloka is also coming off his 2nd best year with a 71.4 overall PFF rating last season - average and below Smith, Sendejo and even Anthony Harris. So, it’s doubtful Iloka starts at either safety spot this year, barring injury, given Harrison Smith is an All-Pro and Sendejo is an established starter coming off his best season.But even though Iloka may not be a starter, he could see the field in a number of ways.First, Iloka could likely have a special teams role.Obviously the Vikings punt coverage team could use some help after it's performance the first two preseason games, and Iloka could help out there and in other special teams as well.He is a larger (6’4”, 225 lbs.) safety with presumably more speed than a linebacker, so that has value on special teams.And speaking of linebackers - Iloka could fit as a strong safety/linebacker covering a tight end.His 6’4” frame and greater athleticism than a typical linebacker could be a better matchup in coverage - particularly in the red zone - who could deny the tall throw to a tight end in the end zone.It could be also that if Anthony Barr is used more as a pass rusher this year, having a taller safety/linebacker to cover a tight end makes some sense.That is usually a more difficult assignment for either Sendejo or Smith, and it’s also not Barr’s forte either.IF ILOKA IS IN, WHO’S OUT?Lastly White Eric Kendricks Jersey , if the Vikings choose to keep Iloka on the roster - which seems likely - that will likely impact the status of other safeties - sooner and/or later.Beyond Smith and Sendejo as starters, Anthony Harris, Jayron Kearse, Tray Matthews and Jack Tocho are fighting for backup spots.Harris and Kearse have been core special teamers that have played very well in those roles.Tocho has flashed well in coverage during preseason, but has been inconsistent as well.Matthews has made some good plays both as a safety and special teamer, but isn’t up to speed on the defensive scheme.Kearse has missed both pre-season games with minor injuries - which may not be the real reason - and this hasn’t been Anthony Harris’ best training camp either.This is also his last year on Harris’ rookie deal.Beyond that, Andrew Sendejo is going from a $3.5 million salary cap hit this year to a $5.5 million cap hit next year, with only $50k dead cap this year.While I doubt Zimmer would replace Sendejo at the last minute in training camp this year, it may be that Sendejo - who turns 31 next month, may not be in the Vikings plans beyond this season.It’s also possible that the Vikings opt to keep five safeties on the roster this season, and one less linebacker, particularly if Iloka can fulfill special teams responsibilities.But if I had to guess at the moment, it seems more likely Iloka replaces Kearse, and Harris may have more of a challenge from Tocho than last year.Beyond that, Iloka, 28, could be groomed as Sendejo’s replacement next year if he’s deemed worthy of an extension.Last, it’s also possible that Iloka doesn’t make the roster in two weeks and is released.That’s also happened before with defensive guys Zimmer has signed from his old team.But at the end of the day Iloka’s release was an opportunity for the Vikings to explore a potential upgrade to safety depth, and a potential replacement for Sendejo down the line.We’ll see how it pans out.

The first game of the season often can be messy and painful to watch, particularly when so many key players don't take the field much, if at all, in the preseason. This one was all of that, even if a tie was a big step in the right direction for Cleveland, which lost 31 of 32 contests entering this season.Yet the Browns sounded more angry with the deadlock than did the Steelers."There's no way that we shouldn't have won this game," safety Jabrill Peppers said. "We didn't win. It is all about winning. Nobody cares about draws or ties, whatever you guys call it. We were in a (position) to win this game countless times. We just have to make the plays."A week later, in a more artistic affair — minus the ugly kicking by the now-released Daniel Carlson for Minnesota — the Vikings and Packers finished 29-29. Like the other tie, it was a divisional game. Unlike the other one, both of these clubs should be in the playoff hunt.So assessing a draw left them perplexed."I don't know what to feel after a tie," Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins said. "It's a unique place to be and proud of the way that the whole team — when I say the team, the coaching staff, the players, the support staff — the way everybody stayed in it and fought. We had one instance when a team had to come back on Thursday night and play, so that's a very short week for rest and then playing again."So we asked, 'Are we pushing our players to play an extra quarter and having to come back, creating a chance for more injuries?'"Yes the potential for more ties would be there in a shorter overtime, but the members of the (competition) committee and the owners didn't think a tie was necessarily a bad thing."Maybe yes, maybe no. But are the alternatives worthwhile?The NFL could adopt the college rule (won't ever happen), which detractors have said is like having a home run derby decide a tied baseball game; too much of the natural game is eliminated. So is the sudden death element, although even that has been diluted by the current NFL overtime rule in which the team receiving the kickoff must score a touchdown for the game to end immediately.Not that we are advocating for getting rid of that and returning to the coin toss being even more instrumental in deciding a game.The option of continuing to play until there is a winner doesn't work in the regular season for a variety of reasons. Player safety — player exhaustion — is the main reason, but there are broadcast considerations on a busy Sunday afternoon, too. And fan comfort, particularly in Lambeau or Soldier Field or Gillette Stadium in December.The NFL also senses that with the shorter overtime, teams will attack more during the extra period. That seems to have been the case at Lambeau Field last Sunday. In the other tie, play was so chaotic it was difficult to tell if either side had a plan for winning."There were a lot of things discussed and on the table," Blandino said of competition committee meetings about overtime. We had less ties under that system; just, look at the stats from 1994-2011, and there were only four ties. If there is anyone outside of Rick Spielman or Mike Zimmer that has the pulse of the Vikings and their personnel, one could make an argument that it’s Paul Allen.Today on his show on KFAN, PA apparently dropped this little nugget bomb:As fans, we love to play armchair GM, and make trades and mock drafts all the time. Most of these trades and mock drafts are proof positive that none of us, especially me, have any business near the roster of an NFL team. Well, except Green Bay. I’d totally love to trade Aaron Rodgers for Christian Hackenberg or a kicker straight up, or let him walk in free agency. I would devastate that team inside of 20 minutes to the point it would take them a decade to recover. But, I digress.Be that as it may, there has been talk of the Vikings moving a player before the season starts for awhile now. Nothing too serious, and we could even call the speculation more fans chirping and theorizing than anything else. But with that little nugget, PA gave it a some serious credibility today. When looking at possible trade scenarios, especially this time of the year, you have to look at depth at a position group, and salary cap hit for the team trading a player away. Compensation is obviously a big component, but let’s focus on the first two for right now and circle back to compensation at the end of the article.Is there is someone on the Vikings roster that meets the criteria for ‘trade candidate’? Let’s take a look.Trae Waynes, CB: So if you believe the Mike Hughes hype, and that Mac Alexander has improved, AND Holton Hill is actually better than advertised against Denver last Saturday, the Vikings have a ton of talent at CB and Waynes might be a guy the Vikings could trade. Minnesota exercised his fifth year option this past Spring, and he is scheduled to make just over $9 million next year, with no dead money against the cap. He played pretty well for the most part last year, and a lot of teams could use a starting CB. His 2018 salary is only $2.2 million, which would be a pretty fair bargain for a good starting CB in today’s NFL.The Vikings have some decisions coming up on contract extensions, and with Anthony Barr’s extension not done yet, it could be that Lord Of The Dark Salary Cap Arts Rob Brzezinski may not have the ability to get a Barr extension done and still have enough money to get Waynes re-signed, too. A trade of Waynes takes $9 million off next year’s cap, and gives them plenty of room to get a Barr deal done without worrying about either putting the franchise tag on Waynes in 2020 or letting him walk with nothing in return.Still, though, do you trade a guy that’s developed in to a solid starting CB for an unproven rookie, regardless of how he’s looked in a handful of practices and one preseason game?Latavius Murray, RB: Dalvin Cook looks explosive so far in camp, and with Mike Boone and Roc Thomas playing well, is Murray expendable? When he re-structured his contract earlier this year, it gave him more money this year and voided 2019 Cheap Laquon Treadwell Jersey , so he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after this season. A Murray trade would free up over $5 million in cap space this year and could give the Vikings a way to help front load a Barr extension with more money this year and next year, for example. But would trading the only established vet in the running back room, and a guy that’s expected to be an important part of the offense be a wise move?Trevor Siemian, QB: From a salary cap perspective, trading SIemian is relatively negligible. The Vikings traded for Siemian and a seventh round pick in exchange for a fifth round pick in next year’s draft to solidify the backup QB position. He is in the last year of his rookie contract, making $1.9 million, and would have no money coming off the books in 2019 since he’ll be a free agent. That said, this is a QB starved league. Kyle Sloter performed well, and you could make an argument that he could overtake Siemian for QB2. In a league where QB play is at a premium, and with Kyle Sloter performing well, could the Vikings look to be shopping Siemian as opposed third string?Everson Griffen, DE: Okay, just calm down a sec, and hear me out. Of all the most unrealistic options, Griff is probably as close to untradeable on this roster as anyone.Or is he?He led the Vikings in sacks last year with 13, but a foot injury slowed him down the second half of the season. He’s 30, and is in the first year of a four year extension signed last year. He’s making $12.7 million this year, with a cap hit of $11.6 million. But this is what his contract numbers look like from 2019 through 2022 (all salary numbers per Spotrac, btw): If you’re looking at Griffen from a pure contract perspective, a restructure next year to reduce his cap hit seems like a distinct possibility. Those aren’t always a given, and if a player doesn’t want to do that, you run the risk of cutting them with nothing in return. And if it does get to that point, the dead money the Vikings would absorb wouldn’t be a really prohibitive number.So, if you like the talent behind him (Stephen Weatherly, Tashawn Bower) and think it might be worth the gamble, and you think Danielle Hunter could step up and become the next elite pass rusher on the defensive line, and you think the addition of Sheldon Richardson means losing a guy like Griff would essentially be an overall wash for the defense as a whole...then trading Griffen and getting a high round pick or another player while you can might not seem that far fetched. With Griffen’s contract no longer on the books, the Vikings have the financial flexibility to do what they want with Barr and probably Richardson, too.Admittedly, there’s a whole lot of ‘if/if/and’ conjecture in each one of these scenarios, and none of these could happen. If the Vikings intent is to trade a player with salary cap reduction in mind, it would seem that if they do pull a trigger on a trade, they’d probably be looking to get a draft pick or picks in return as opposed to another player and their contract. If they would want to do a player for player swap, my guess is they’d look to get an offensive lineman, if you don’t believe Tom Compton, Danny Isidora, or Aviante Collins can get it done. Or they could look to get a wide receiver, if you’re not happy with the depth behind Stefon DIggs and Adam Thielen.My personal belief is that if the Vikings do make a move, it would be as much for salary cap flexibility as compensation, so I think they’d be looking to get draft picks as opposed to players.So, let’s see what happens. If anything.

1-2 Punch The Minnesota Vikings are entering their final phases of training camp before they start their joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars...Dalvin Cook and Latavius MurrayCook has shown the same level of explosion that attracted the Vikings to draft him. He does not look like a player who has had an ACL tear the prior year http://www.vikingscheapshops.com/cheap-authentic-trae-waynes-jersey , and is cutting violently without appearing to favor his knee. Latavius Murray also appears more smooth in his cuts, and he and Cook look like a dynamic tandem. There is quite a bit of camaraderie between the two as well. The two walked out on to the field together, and Cook asked beat reporters “Have you ever heard of a 1-2 punch?”The Offense had an off dayFumbled snaps and a drops were a couple of issues for the offense today. Vikings Offensive Coordinator John Defillipo yelled at the unit for fumbling 3 snaps. This is likely due to inexperience at the center position with Pat Elflein missing, but every position group on the offense struggled. Kirk Cousins was visibly frustrated with his mistakes, after having a particularly poor redzone drill period.Cousins is more mechanical than most quarterbacks, which showed in his quick release and timing while under pressure. There could be concern with Cousins ability to improvise, and create when mechanics are thrown off, or he misidentifies pressure from the opposing defense.Mike Hughes is specialThere are some players that step on to the field and it’s obvious they belong. This is true about the Vikings first round selection Mike Hughes. He looks like a veteran already, and might have the highest ceiling of every cornerback on the field...including Xavier Rhodes. One play that particularly stood out was a play during the redzone period. Hughes covered Adam Thielen, and was on top of him immediately out of his break. As fans of a young team, our only hope is that they learn how to play a full sixty minute, three phase game at some point. It’s okay to be pissed off that they aren’t able to close these winnable games out, while also being excited for where this team could be once they do figure everything out. Those two feelings aren’t mutually exclusive. The Bears may be 3-3, but they’ve been fun to watch so far this season. If there’s not a light at the end of the rebuilt tunnel, then we’ve got a Phil Emery/Marc Trestman scenario playing out, and I just don’t believe that to be the case. Let’s take a closer look at the playing time break downs for the Bears, and also some individual stats.OFFENSEThis was one of Mitchell Trubisky’s worst games as a pro. He was erratic all day, he was sacked twice, and he threw two interceptions. He was barely over 50% at 26 for 50, with a passer rating of 69.8, but his 333 yards was the second most in his career, and his third straight game over 300 yards. He also had 6 scrambles for 81 yards, including this fantastic touchdown. Trubisky’s top target was tight end Trey Burton, who came down with 9 of 11 targets for 126 yards and a TD. Tarik Cohen was the most targeted with 12, and he caught 8 for 69 and a TD.Cohen added 14 yards on 6 runs, and a 17 yard punt return. Anthony Miller was targeted 7 times and he hauled in 2 for 35 yards. Taylor Gabriel had 3 receptions for 26 yards. Kevin White — remember him? — caught both of his targets for 64 yards. Allen Robinson II only caught 1 (5 targets) for 4 yards. If Robinson is going to take time off because of his groin injury, I’d like to see White get those reps instead of Josh Bellamy. Jordan Howard had 39 yards rushing on 12 carries, and a TD. Ha also caught 1 ball for a 9 yard gain. After the game head coach Matt Nagy talked about his displeasure with their ground game saying, “Our run game has to get better.”Agreed, but what seems to be the problem?“It’s everybody,” he said via the Chicago Sun Times. “And we just need to figure out how we can do that, what’s best for us identity-wise. And it’s not one person.”I think the problems with the sputtering running game starts with Nagy. The offensive line hasn’t exactly been great as run blockers, but the team hasn’t stuck with the run enough to see. Chicago’s o-line wasn’t flagged once in the game. When they fell to 6th in draft position, there was a bit of skepticism as you were unsure which quarterbacks, if any, would fall to the Jets at #6. When the Jets made the trade up to ,3# everyone knew it was for a quarterback, and the excitement leading into the draft was surreal.Fans would’ve been happy with any one of Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen, or Darnold, so long as the pick was not Josh Allen. However https://www.thebearsfanshop.com/Kyle-Fuller-Jersey , most fans presumed Darnold would go to Cleveland #1 and that the pick was between Rosen and Mayfield. When Darnold fell to ,3# it was a shock, and fans were ecstatic to have him in particular and to simply finally have that franchise quarterback they could rally around.Production-wise, he’s been a typical rookie. Darnold has played great in each of the Jets’ three victories and also played well in a loss to Miami. However, in the Jets’ other three losses, against the talented defenses presented by Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Minnesota, Darnold was plainly terrible. He sits near the bottom of the league in completion percentage and passer rating and leads the league in interceptions with 10.However, as I previously mentioned, that’s typical of a rookie - let alone the youngest ever. Few rookies are plus starters - after all, take a look at the rest of the rookie class. Mayfield is in a similar neighborhood with high highs and low lows, while Allen and Rosen have struggled mightily in poor situations.Darnold has been remarkable off the field with his team and football-first mentality, and on the field has flashed with money throws, arm strength, aggressiveness, and bounceback ability that fans are not used to seeing from quarterbacks on this team. He’s going to continue to have his ups and downs this year, but long-term, the promise is high.WCG - 2. The Jets may be where the Bears were a year ago – with a rookie QB playing for a defensive coach and no real weapons for him to throw the ball. Am I wrong on my assessment? Who should Bears fans be worried about making plays against this Bears defense on Sunday?GGN: A month ago or before the season I would’ve lauded this skill group as underrated and a top-half unit, but they are very banged up. Their best skill player, WR Quincy Enunwa, will miss another game. Terrelle Pryor, not a good player but capable of occasional big plays, is off the team. Jermaine Kearse does not look 100%. The Jets are down to that declining Kearse and Robby Anderson as their top two WRs - they recently picked Rishard Matthews off the scrapheap to save Darnold from the situation he was in against Minnesota throwing to fringe roster players.Don’t sleep on Anderson. He’s a legit deep threat. He toasts his way open downfield against top corners weekly - whether or not he racks up the production to match his play is a coin toss based on the quarterbacking performance. He toasted Xavier Rhodes this past week but was overthrown by Darnold. The downfield chemistry between these two is still a work in progress, but the flashes have been there.At RB, Bilal Powell is now done for the year. He is a far, far better pass protector and pass catcher than Isaiah Crowell, who will likely take over the lion’s share of the carries. Rookie Trenton Cannon is very speedy and flashed with a 30+ yard wheel route reception last week - but has very shaky hands as a receiver and ball-carrier. We’ll have to see where he fits in with Powell out.At TE, the Jets are uninspiring. They love to utilize all four of their tight ends in pass protection and as run blockers, but don’t have an established receiving threat. That could be changing - rookie Chris Herndon has begun to flash with touchdowns in back-to-back weeks. Earning playing time as a strong pass protector, he had an ugly drop early in the year in a key spot of the Miami loss, but is now making more and more big plays each week.As for your assessment Bryce Callahan Color Rush Jersey , I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve said a lot that the Bears are who I want the Jets to be next year - 2nd year QB, fresh new HC (preferably offense-minded), and a lot of new weapons.WCG: 3. (Fun aside – a fight over Todd Bowles is the reason the Bears passed on Bruce Arians as then-GM Phil Emery insisted Arians keep Rod Marinelli on as Defensive Coordinator but Arians wanted to bring in Bowles. That led to the Bears hiring Marc Trestman instead and everyone lived happily ever after 鈥?let’s just move back to the questions) Back to the parallels with the Bears – it seems like the Jets may be in prime position to hire a creative offensive mind (John Defilippo?) as HC and stock the roster with weapons for Darnold. Is there a sense of inevitability to that plan or can Bowles save his job?GGN: I think Bowles is in the middle of the see-saw right now. Coming into the year, in spite of his mediocre track record and lack of progression, he seemed safe. With a rookie quarterback, he looked like he would have a lot of rope. However, Bowles has had ugly performances in a few losses this year, making blatant playcalling errors defensively, watching his players commit timely penalties and ridiculous post-play ones, and failing to adjust. All of these things have been issues back to his first year in 2015.The Jets did not have the expectation of winning games this year, but I think Bowles needs to get to at least 7 wins to save his job. The Jets have won 5 games each of the last two years. At some point, enough is enough regardless of circumstance. If he finishes in that 7-8 win range without the playoffs, I think it’s up in the air and will depend on the organization’s thoughts on him. If he falls short of 7, I think there’s a good chance he might be done. If he somehow gets a winning record, he will probably be back.I can tell you this for sure - nothing short of a Super Bowl win will turn this fanbase back towards his side.WCG: 4. On the other side of the ball, the Jets spent the 6th overall pick on Jamal Adams, safety out of LSU, who was my favorite player coming out of the 2017 draft. The Jets also, famously around these parts, took Leonard Williams one pick before the Bears spot in the 2015 draft with the 6th pick. How have those two popular Bears targets played so far and who else should we know from this defense?GGN: Leonard Williams is a huge enigma and splits this fanbase. I don’t think anybody will debate he has been a good player. He plays hard, executes stunts, brings tremendous power to the table, and defends the run very well. He’s at the very top of the leaderboards in stuffs and quarterback hits since he entered the league. However, he has not really progressed since his rookie season. He goes long stretches without sacks and sometimes has games with a lot of 0s in the box score. Does the box score tell the whole story? Heck no. Williams creates a lot of pressure forcing mistakes by QBs and draws quite a lot of double teams that limit his production and help teammates. Howver, he simply has not been as dominant as he was pitched to be. Is he good? Yes. Has he been the team’s most consistent performer across the 3.5 seasons he has been here? Yes. But is he great? Maybe not. At just 24, perhaps there is still progression to be made for him. At the least, he’s a presence on every play who typically plays good run defense and gets in the face of the quarterback a few times a game.Jamal Adams rocks. He had an up and down, but very promising rookie year. He defended the run well and contributed on a lot of turnovers, but struggled in coverage against tight ends as he yielded a multitude of touchdown receptions.This year, he’s started to bring it all together. His run defense went from very good to elite - he is making multiple stuffs per game, most of them coming off of the edge. He cleaned up some his tackling issues and has been very efficient finishing plays this year. If you don’t block him on the edge, he’s going to make the play Josh Bellamy Jersey , and if you do, it better not be a tight end or wide receiver - he’ll smash them.His coverage is so much better. In man, he’s less hasty and has stuck to his matchups. In zone, he has still made a few mistakes, but he’s done better making plays on the football. Last season, he was often overagressive and found himself tripping or being overpowered at the catch point and at the top of routes - those things aren’t happening as much.Though still with improvement to make - Adams is a playmaker in every facet and he has proven capable of lining up anywhere. He’s been most dominant on the edge defending the run. He’s the best player on the team (ideally Darnold takes over that title down the line) and the organization and fanbase alike are very happy to have him.WCG: 5. The NFL trading deadline used to be a nothing story, but in recent years has really heated up. Let’s pretend we’re the GMs of our respective beloved franchises. What trade makes sense between the Jets and Bears?GGN: This is a hard section to fill out since the Jets are devoid of many enticing trade pieces.I could see DE/DT Henry Anderson as an interesting trade chip. 27 but only in his 4th NFL season, Anderson was shipped out of Indy due to a throat injury and a switch from a 3-4 to 4-3. Now at home in his natural scheme and healthy, Anderson is a force. While not a strong run defender, he is a very solid interior pass rusher, has a great motor, and great awareness that has helped him deflect a few passes and get out to limit a few passing plays. I think he can help any 3-4 defensive front improve their pass rush as a rotational piece. For the Bears, he wouldn’t even have to be on the field more than 25%-40% of the time, but I think he could help them get even more dominant defensively.
