Their offense was 8 for 12 (67%) on third down conversions. Did they do enough to win?I guess that depends on your perspective. The Bears were shut out in the first half, there were some missed opportunities, and they only had 124 total yards in the first two quarters. Football is a 60 minute game, and if the offense was better in the first 30 minutes, there would have been no overtime. Chicago’s defensive coaches had an extra week to prepare for the ex-Bear think tank of Adam Gase (head coach), Dowell Loggains (offensive coordinator), and Jeremiah Washburn (o-line coach), yet they couldn’t figure out a way to slow down the Dolphins’ offense. With so much extra attention going to Chicago's edges, where was the inside blitz? The heat and humidity got to the Bears (more on that later), and Chicago allowed 541 yards in the game. The Bears were flagged 6 times for 58 yards, while the Dolphins got hit with 7 penalties for 67 yards. None of which were offensive holding. Let’s take a closer look at the playing time break downs for the Bears, and also some individual stats.OFFENSEThe playing time trend for Jordan Howard continues to shrink. The heat could have been a factor, but we won’t know until this next Sunday when the Bears host the New England Patriots. If it shrinks again, that’s a problem. Howard had 14 rushes for 69 yards, and a crucial fumble on the goal line. Tarik Cohen also had a crucial fumble in the game, but he also had a rushing TD on 5 runs for 31 yards. He caught 7 of 9 targets for 90 yards. The other Bears’ turnover was a Mitchell Trubisky red zone interception on a horrible decision, but if you’re looking to blame this loss on him, then you might have some built-in biases that is leading you to an idiotic conclusion. He ended up throwing 31 passes while completing 22 of them for 316 yards and 3 TDs for a passer rating of 122.5. He fought back after a slow start (9 of 14 for 89 yards), which is what you need your quarterback to do. Trubisky completed 5 passes to Allen Robinson II and 5 to Taylor Gabriel. Robinson had 64 yards and a TD, while Gabriel had 110 yards. Gabriel also added a 9 yard run. Rookie wide out Anthony Miller was targeted 4 times and he caught one for a 29 yard TD. Tight end Trey Burton caught Trubisky’s other TD on a shovel pass. He had 4 receptions for 23 yards. Right tackle Bobby Massie was flagged twice for an illegal formation, but if you’re blaming him for those flags then you might be football-stupid. The Bears allowed 2 sacks, and 3 QB hits, and their overall yards per carry average was 5.3.DEFENSESo this happened yesterday...Could it be possible that this (Jahns’ tweet below) had an affect on that (Bowen’s tweet above)?I think so. Fellow inside backer Danny Trevathan had 8 and a QBH. Leonard Floyd had 4 tackles, and 2 penalties. One for throwing a receiver to the ground that didn’t want to be tackled, and the another for grazing Osweilers helmet. Trying to sort out just why has brought up several culprits, with the two most frequently accused being offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and quarterback Dak Prescott. But which is the biggest factor in this failing season? Our Michael Strawn and Tom Ryle dive into that in their weekly Cowboys debate.Michael: It’s very possible that both are the problem. Dak Prescott may prove to never be more than a poor-to-average NFL starter. But we don’t know that he can’t be better than that because he’s handcuffed by this archaic offense and (until the addition of Amari Cooper) perhaps the least talented group of targets in the entire league. Obviously, Dak is never going to be a Brady, Brees, or Rodgers who can throw pinpoint passes to barely open receivers. But he does have skills and Linehan’s scheme fails to take advantage of them. The coaching staff stubbornly insists on trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Louis Riddick sums it up pretty well:Tom: Look, I am no Linehan lover, but watching Dak play this year makes it impossible to not question whether he is really able to be an effective NFL quarterback. He seems to lock in on his first read, doesn’t audible out of plays that the defense is completely ready to stop, and misses far too many passes for no apparent reason. I wonder sometimes if Linehan’s play-calls are meant to give Dak something simple to do, but then have him just fail to accomplish the task. And given some times when it certainly looks like he had a read option and just made the wrong decision, I’m not sure Linehan would be right to trust him with more running responsibility. Yes, he may be that square peg, but I think it was not unreasonable to expect more growth as a passer/decision maker than he has shown.Michael: Ugh. I thought I posted an unassailable opening and get obliterated on the retort. It’s impossible to argue with any of your conclusions regarding Dak. He’s guilty of everything you say and, worse, seems to be regressing in front of our eyes each week. The point still stands however: the current approach is a proven failure. When one strategy has been proven wrong it’s up to the coaches to adapt, evolve and develop a new one. There’s no guarantee of success, but there’s at least a chance, whereas there’s no chance with the current approach. I mean, Dak’s single greatest attribute is his running skills and Linehan makes virtually no effort to leverage that skill. That’s criminal in today’s NFL.Tom: Well, there’s another way to look at Dak being the problem, and that is the coaching staff deciding he was the solution back when they made the now-infamous “hot hand” decision. It seems, in retrospect, that they were convinced they could make him a pocket passer. That seems to be integral to Linehan’s scheme, and now he simply doesn’t have someone who can fill the role. It may just be beyond Prescott’s ability to master. That is not really his fault, and it does put some of the onus back on Linehan - but it also spreads the blame to the rest of the staff, including Garrett and the personnel department. They all should have done a much better job evaluating what Dak was and what he was capable of becoming. It makes Dak the problem, not him as a person or player, but as a bad acquisition for a team that just wasn’t constructed for him. (Remember, Ezekiel Elliott was supposed to be help for Tony Romo.)Michael: I’ve been blaming Linehan but let’s face it, the real issue is the head coach. The offense being run is Jason Garrett’s. And if Garrett ordered Linehan to start employing the concept Riddick outlines in his tweet then Linehan would do it - or at least try. And you’re exactly right, the franchise as a whole, including Will McClay and Jerry and Stephen, all badly misjudged what they had in Dak. But I also can’t help but think Dak hasn’t been coached up very well. At a minimum, his footwork should be better. Anyone with a reasonable learning faculty can learn how to drop back, set their feet properly, and employ proper stances to deliver the ball. ANYONE. I seriously wonder what this staff spends their time on in all those organized activities and training camp sessions because Dak’s footwork is atrocious. So I’m back to Linehan and https://www.dallascowboysfanshop.com/Demarcus-Lawrence-Jersey , I guess Kellen Moore, as people who just aren’t getting the job done.I get back to my original stance. All the criticism of Prescott is well deserved. Changing schemes or innovative play calls aren’t going to fix all his issues. But they might - might - allow him to make more plays than he is currently. But we don’t know that because the coaches simply won’t try. And that’s hard to understand.Tom: I’ve certainly got a bone or two to pick with the coaches, but one thing does keep coming back to me. That is the severe limitation the CBA places on how much time the staff has to work with the players. They are forced to spend most of it on installation of plays and game-planning, which leaves almost no time for drilling on things like footwork and reading the field. That is something that Prescott can do on his own with outside coaches, and either he hasn’t done enough, or it hasn’t taken. There is certainly plenty of blame to be assigned here, but I still think it comes down to the Cowboys having the wrong player at QB for their scheme. It still has a bit of the chicken or egg about it, because they don’t appear to have done much at all to adjust the scheme to fit their QB. This may be one that neither of us is all that far off, because both are clearly factors. So that leaves it in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Even at the risk of bringing on an “avalanche of illogic” (per Mike Fisher) when saying anything slightly positive about the Cowboy, I’m going to start this post with some good news.The Cowboys have only been called for 20 accepted penalties on offense this season. On a per-game basis, that ties the Cowboys for the 13th-fewest penalties in the league. Things look even better on defense, where they are tied for the 9th-fewest penalties (15). It wasn’t so long ago that the Cowboys regularly ranked among the most penalized teams in the league, so that’s definitely something to feel good about. Unfortunately, that’s it in terms of good news for today. So now for the bad news.16 of those 20 penalties resulted in a stalled drive, meaning no points were scored on the drive and no first down was achieved after the penalty incurred. So when you see an offensive penalty and automatically believe that drive is dead, that’s because four out of five times it actually is.And that stalled drive percentage of 80% ranks the Cowboys dead last in a league where the average is 56% and the best teams have a rate below 40%. Some will be quick to point out that this is all on the coaching, which would be true if it weren’t for the players committing the penalties. Others will reflexively blame Jerry Jones for this, which would be at least partly true if we were talking about the 1964 University of Arkansas National Championship team for which he played on the offensive line and was a co-captain. And so it is that almost every time the discussion turns to problems the Cowboys have, some intellectual high-flyer will inevitably propose a simple solution to the problem like “Fire Jason Garrett,” which is inevitably followed by “!!!,” because everybody knows that extra exclamation marks automatically validate the preceding message; the exclamation mark has become the selfie of grammar.But like in every other avenue of life, while simple answers are attractive precisely because they are less intellectually demanding, they also almost never work.So let’s study the data a bit further to find out what’s ailing the Cowboys offense, and we’ll start by breaking down the calls that have gone against the Cowboys this year, by player, not including penalties that were declined or offset: The penalties here didn’t just go against some scrubs, they include some of the faces of the franchise: two former number one picks in Smith and Elliott, the quarterback (I put Prescott in here for the three delay-of-game penalties, but the NFL considers these a team penalty and doesn’t assign them to an individual player), a second-round pick in Williams, and in Collins a guy who was almost a first-round pick.Should Garrett bench Prescott for a couple of snaps after every delay-of-game penalty? Tell Tyron Smith to sit in a corner for a drive and reflect on what a bad boy he’s been for that holding penalty? Take away La’el Collins’ helmet after every penalty and tell him to “think about what you’ve done.” How about cutting Ezekiel Elliott to set an example; after all, Jimmy Johnson would have done that, no?The O-line is responsible for 12 of the 20 penalties and 9 of the 16 stalled drives, and while that may be part of the reason why Paul Alexander was fired Ibraheim Campbell Jersey , that’s not enough to blame the O-line alone for the stalled drives. Or any other player for that matter.Another data point worth looking at is when the penalties happened, on the hypothesis that a penalty on third down will be a lot harder to overcome than a penalty on first down. Here’s the split for the penalties on the 16 stalled drives:1st down: 4 penalties2nd down: 5 penalties3rd down: 7 penaltiesInterestingly, of the four penalties that didn’t result in a stalled drive, three were on 1st down, one on 2nd. That suggests incurring more penalties on later downs was likely detrimental to the Cowboys’ stuffed drive percentage, but it’s probably not enough to explain away the Cowboys’ 80% stuffed drive percentage.On to our next and final data point, in which we look at what the Cowboys did on the play immediately following the penalty. On 14 of the 16 plays, the Cowboys offense had 10 or more yards to go. Here are the details: Two things stand out to me here:Why would you run on any down with 15+ yards to go? I understand the theoretical need to get the run/pass balance right, but when you know your offense has issues when it’s behind the sticks, why call a run that will net you five or six yards when you need 15+? What’s up with the short passes on long downs?The Cowboys chose a pass play on nine of the 14 plays in the chart above. None of them netted more than 13 yards, most were completions well sort of the sticks. It’d be easy to simply blame this on the quarterback and be done with it, but that would be too simple. The issue here is that the Cowboys don’t seem to have any plays that will reliably result in long completions. And that’s on the QB. But it’s also on the receivers. And the O-line. And the playcalling. And the offensive scheme. And on Jerry Jones, because, well, ... because!!! Perhaps the issues after penalties are symptomatic of a more general issue for the Cowboys offense: the inability to generate big plays when they need them.On 2nd or 3rd down with 11+ yards to go, the 2018 Cowboys achieved a 1st down on just four out of 46 plays (8.7%). That 1st-down percentage ranks them 31st in a league that averages 15.7% and where the leading team (Chargers) averages 37%.Which means the inability to convert after a penalty is not an issue specific to penalties, but is merely an indication of a much broader issue in Dallas. The Cowboys are a run-first, ball-control offense. As such, the entire offense is predicated on “staying on schedule” with a high percentage of runs and a lot of short passes on first and second down that are designed to get the team into manageable third-down situations. That methodical approach to moving the chains is only occasionally interspersed with a play designed to gain big yardage. In 2016, that worked perfectly. The Cowboys stormed to a 13-3 record by staying on schedule: No team ran the ball on a higher percentage of first-down plays than the Cowboys, who did it on 59.8% of all first downs. Ezekiel Elliott led the league in first-down rushes with 204, averaging 5.5 yards a pop en route to establishing one of the most efficient offenses in the league that year. The Cowboys averaged 6.84 yards-to-go on third down, the sixth-best value in the league; Dak Prescott had the sixth-best completion percentage in the NFL on third downs (65.1%) and the sixth-best passer rating. All of this resulted in an offense that ranked fourth overall with 2.54 points scored per drive.The problem is that a penalty (or any other play that results in a loss of yardage), short-circuits that entire offensive plan. Suddenly the offense is derailed and no longer “on schedule”. And when that happens, teams usually thumb through their playbook until they reach the ‘big-play section.’ Unfortunately for the Cowboys, most of the pages in the big-play section are either blank or filled with plays the team can’t properly execute.Which is why in 2018, the offense isn’t working anymore. The Cowboys are still running the ball a lot on first down (ranked fourth with 58.4% of runs on first down), and Ezekiel Elliott still runs a lot on first down (ranked fourth with 83 runs) averaging an impressive 5.7 yards. But the Cowboys are now facing 7.38 yards-to-go on third down, which ranks them 22nd in the league. And partly as a result, Dak Prescott’s completion percentage on third downs has regressed to 58.9% and his passer rating on third downs is a subterranean 77.1. All of which results in an offense that ranks just 19th with 1.93 points per drive. Perhaps the coaching change at O-line will improve an O-line that has allowed 23 sacks (ranked 24th). Perhaps the addition of Amari Cooper will improve a receiving corps that has accumulated just 595 yards after catch (ranked 31st).Perhaps Dak Prescott will continue to play as efficiently as he has in the last four games (96.5 passer rating) after his bumbling start to the season (74.5 passer rating in first three games).Perhaps the Cowboys will trade for a TE. Perhaps the coaching staff has used the bye week to fill the blank pages in the big play section of the playbook with “cool” plays the players can actually execute effectively.Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.In the end, the Cowboys of the first seven weeks weren’t able to convert enough plays with 11+ yards to go. Their current 1st-down percentage of 8.7% pales against the 17.2% they achieved in 2016. Penalties are not derailing the 2018 offense. But the failure to execute their offensive scheme is. Fix that and things could be looking up again.
