The former Detroit defensive backs agreed to free-agent contracts with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with negotiations.

Both players are expected to sign deals Thursday, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because NFL teams are prohibited from announcing signings until free agency officially begins Wednesday afternoon.

SiriusXM Sports reported that Hayden will sign a three-year deal worth $19 million, including $9.5 million guaranteed.

The 27-year-old Hayden replaces nickel cornerback Aaron Colvin, who reportedly agreed to a four-year deal with the Houston Texans on Tuesday.

Hayden has played in 61 games with Oakland (2013-16) and Detroit (2017) Drew Brees Jersey , totaling 223 tackles, 35 pass breakups, three interceptions and 1 陆 sacks.

Carey is expected to be a core special teams player for the Jaguars, who are looking to upgrade those units in 2018.

A sixth-round draft pick by Cleveland in 2009, Carey landed in Jacksonville when the Jaguars claimed him after being waived/injured. He started 10 games for Jacksonville in 2010 JK Scott Jersey , got cut the following year and ended up in Detroit. He has 117 tackles, nine pass breakups and three interceptions in 99 games.

Hayden and Carey will join one of the league's best defenses, a unit that returns 10 starters from last season and expects to be even better while playing a second year together.

They are part of Jacksonville's 2018 free-agent class that also includes All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell and speedy receiver Donte Moncrief, according to two other people familiar with negotiations. The Jaguars also are re-signing receiver Marqise Lee.

Norwell is expected to sign a five-year, $66.5 million contract that includes $30 million guaranteed Keenan Allen Jersey , one of the people said. That would make him one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the league.

Moncrief will sign a one-year deal worth $7 million, according to ESPN. Lee agreed to a four-year deal worth $38 million that includes $18 million guaranteed, another person said.

Lee and Moncrief will be counted on to try to fill the void left by losing former Pro Bowl receiver Allen Robinson, who is headed to Chicago.

Norwell will slide into Jacksonville's offensive line at left guard, between left tackle Cam Robinson and center Brandon Linder.

Although Jacksonville led the NFL in rushing in 2017 Seth Roberts Jersey , the running game stalled late in the season and barely was a factor in the playoffs.

Jermaine Kearse was far from pleased last week when he heard the details of the NFL’s new policy on the national anthem.

The veteran wide receiver and his New York Jets teammates couldn’t be happier, though Jason Verrett Jersey , to have the full support of acting owner Christopher Johnson.

”For me personally, I’m very appreciative of him,” Kearse said after practice Tuesday. ”I think he kind of gets it.”

NFL owners voted last Wednesday to require players to stand for the anthem or stay in the locker room. Teams will be fined if players don’t stand. Some players have been kneeling during the playing of ”The Star-Spangled Banner” before games the last two seasons to protest police brutality and racial inequality.

”Honestly, I’m disappointed,” Kearse said. ”I think they’re kind of missing the point. For us as a team, I think if you’ve paid attention, nobody on our team kneeled, but that doesn’t mean we don’t support the causes of why people are kneeling.”

Johnson said shortly after the league announced the policy that he will not punish his players for any peaceful protests – and would pay any potential fines incurred by the team as a result of his players’ actions.

”To me, honestly, the conversation about whether players are kneeling or not Derek Carr Jersey , I felt like that conversation was dying and it didn’t get brought up until they decided to make the rules,” Kearse said. ”So, I think we’re kind of getting away from the actual cause. I think we’re starting to focus on the kneeling part rather than the cause behind it.

Added coach Todd Bowles: ”It’s always nice to have the owner have your back. It’s about the issues for us. We didn’t have a problem a year ago. We’ll continue to talk as a group, as a team and as an organization, and go forward from there.”

Left tackle Kelvin Beachum echoed Kearse’s sentiments about the NFL’s new policy. Beachum and quarterback Josh McCown are part of the Players Coalition, an advocacy group of NFL players that has had discussions with league owners on social matters.

”It is disappointing, but it is what it is at this point,” Beachum said. ”We’ve been talking about this issue for a number of years and the league finally made a decision. We’re going to still continue to do the work. Our owner supports us in doing that work and he’s with us as we’re doing that work. So we’re not going to keep talking this game and keep talking about the anthem. We’re actually going to do something about it and go find a solution.”

Johnson met with the entire team last week and explained to the players why he voted in favor of the new NFL rule – only San Francisco’s Jed York abstained – while also assuring them they would not be punished by the team if they did not adhere to the league’s policy.

”He’s very supportive of us David Andrews Jersey ,” Kearse said. ”I mean, whether guys choose to or not, he supports our decision – their decision – but like I said, nobody last year kneeled. The fact that he’ll support us any way he can is a very gratifying feeling.”

Johnson took over the day-to-day operations of the team last June from his brother Woody, who is serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom in President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump frequently has been critical of players who have protested during the anthem, so it would appear a tough spot for the younger Johnson while balancing business, politics and family.

But Christopher Johnson immediately earned his players’ respect last year when he went up to each one in the Jets’ locker room before the team’s home opener against Miami in September and asked if he could stand with them in unity.

Johnson, the players and the coaches stood – arms locked – on the sideline before every remaining game. Several players pointed to the owner’s actions as playing a large role in establishing cohesiveness on a team that stuck together despite a 5-11 record.

But Johnson’s latest stance has become a polarizing issue with some Jets fans and even politicians saying the owner’s support of a player potentially protesting during the anthem is misguided.

”It’s great that he stuck his neck out there,” linebacker Darron Lee said, ”because I know a lot of people feel passionate about that.”

New York Rep. Pete King wrote on Twitter on Saturday that it was ”disgraceful” that Johnson would pay fines for players who would kneel during the anthem. King added that Johnson’s decision was ”encouraging a movement premised on lies vs. police.”

”Would he support all player protests?” King continued. ”Would he pay fines of players giving Nazi salutes or spew racism? It’s time to say goodbye to Jets!”

The July 16 deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term deals with their current deals is a little more than a week away and the Cowboys will reportedly use some of that time to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

Calvin Watkins of The Athletic reports that the two sides are expected to talk about a deal next week. The chances of getting one done may not be too great, however.

Lawrence quickly signed his franchise tag with the team and has indicated several times this offseason that he is OK playing out the tag in hopes that he’ll “break the bank” in free agency next year. Watkins reports that he’s looking for a five-year deal and would like to see what players like Jadeveon Clowney James Develin Jersey , Aaron Donald and Khalil Mack get from their teams.

It seems unlikely that all those deals will get done in the next 10 days, which suggests that Lawrence will be trying for a repeat of last year’s strong performance to set the stage for a big payday in 2019.

After serving for five seasons as the team’s linebackers coach, Martindale was promoted to coordinator in January after Dean Pees left the post.

Enthusiastic doesn’t even begin to describe Martindale’s attitude about being in charge of the defense.

”Ever since we’ve made this transition, it’s been a joy to just come through those gates every day. I love it,” Martindale said after Wednesday’s mandatory minicamp practice.

This isn’t the first time Martindale has been put in charge of molding a defense. In 2010, he watched over a unit in Denver that was the worst in the NFL in both yards and points allowed per game.

Given a second chance, the 55-year-old Martindale is putting together a defense that will rely heavily on the instinct of several of its most proven players, most notably safety Eric Weddle and linebackers Terrell Suggs and C.J. Mosley.

”He’s just putting his personal fix on our defense and expanding it, giving the guys confidence to play fast,” Weddle said. ”The idea is to do what’s best for the defense, not what’s best the individual.”

Martindale called Mosley ”the quarterback” of a fluid unit that can make a snap-change from drop-back coverage to an all-out blitz. In that regard, Mosley believes this defense is superior to the one that in 2017 yielded 18.9 points per game DeSean Jackson Jersey , sixth-best in the NFL.

”The way we’re able to use our core guys, put them in different spots and do some of the same things just from different positions, it’s more creative, I would say, than where we were last year,” Mosley said.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh promoted Martindale rather than go outside the organization because he wanted to extend his vision of a defense that has evolved since his arrival in 2008.

”All we’re doing is forwarding John’s plan,” Martindale said. ”We’re remodeling the package. It’s still Ravens football, it’s still Ravens defense, but we’ve streamlined it. It’s the elegant simplicity. Guys are playing really fast.”

Asked for his take on Martindale’s defense, Ravens offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg replied, ”They’re fast and they’re furious.”

”We’re doing a lot of neat things on defense, things that are really good,” Harbaugh said. ”More than ever, we’re putting it on our players to make decisions in real time.”

”For the most part, it’s been the same,” Mosley said. ”He always comes in and says, `I have to lead the linebacker room,’ and sits down and gets to talking like he’s back at linebacker coach.”

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa will miss the opener against Kansas City after reinjuring his left foot.

Coach Anthony Lynn said Friday that Bosa’s first foot injury had healed but that he suffered a new injury during Wednesday’s practice. Bosa first injured the foot on Aug. 7 during training camp and missed the preseason.

The Chargers had been cautious with Bosa during the preseason Keanu Neal Jersey , hoping that another injury wouldn’t occur.

“He’s real frustrated. He’s been waiting for a while to get back on the field,” Lynn said. “It’s going to be week to week. We hope it doesn’t linger but it could.”

This will be the first time Bosa has missed a game because of injury since being selected with the third overall pick in the 2016 draft. He has 23 career sacks in two seasons, including an NFL-record 19 in his first 20 games.

Bosa led the team last season in tackles (54) and sacks (12.5) while being second in tackles for loss (17.5) and quarterback hits (22).

With Bosa’s injury, the Chargers will be without two starters on their defensive line. Defensive tackle Corey Liuget is serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Isaac Rochell will get his first NFL start in Bosa’s place. The second-year player saw extensive playing time during the preseason and led the team in tackles for loss (3) along with two sacks.

“Isaac had a great camp. He’s grown like a weed, stepped up and got the job done,” Lynn said.

Rochell said the increased snaps have allowed him to develop more confidence and also gain the trust of coaches. He added that “you don’t want your coaches to feel like they are in survival mode.”

The defense’s biggest challenge this week will be containing Patrick Mahomes. The second-year quarterback uses his athleticism to keep plays alive, which has led to big gains downfield.

“He has a strong arm but has the threat of running,” Rochelle said. “With the other threats they have, there are going to be a lot of challenges.”

Lynn also said that he expects tight end Antonio Gates to be active for Sunday’s game. Gates re-signed with the team Monday, and Lynn said it looked as though Gates picked up where he left off last season.

Entering his third season, the next step in Bosa's development could come from a better understanding of coordinator Gus Bradley's 4-3 defense. The Chargers were productive in 2017 while transitioning to Bradley's system, finishing third in points per game allowed, tied for fifth in sacks, and sixth in takeaways. Those rankings could improve as the coaches, players and front office are more comfortable with what will allow the defense to succeed in this iteration.

The Chargers added depth in the draft, with Bosa praising defensive lineman Justin Jones and linebacker Uchenna Nwosu for their ability to get to the quarterback. The progression of second-year defensive end Isaac Rochell could result in Bosa staying fresh by allowing Bradley to rotate more. The 280-pound Bosa could play inside if Rochell is capable of creating pressure off the edge consistently Tre'Davious White Jersey , allowing Bradley to use his most disruptive players together in obvious passing situations.

Bosa, who had 12 1/2 sacks last season as the bookend to Melvin Ingram, could cause more havoc if opponents cannot focus all their attention on stopping the two standout defensive ends.

"Joey can improve," coach Anthony Lynn said. "I don't think he has reached his peak yet at all, and the better we get on that defensive line and create more one-on-one matchups, that's going to help his success as well."

But Bosa will never put a target on his individual production going into his season after recognizing that chasing personal goals often comes at the expense of both the individual and the team.

"If you want to get 15 sacks and you're out there doing your own things to get sacks, more than likely you're going to hurt the team and not get a sack rather than you just doing your job and you falling into one," Bosa said. "I've come to realize when I'm really out there trying to make a play like that, I do something wrong and they'll break a run or whatever. But if I I stay within myself and the defense, it usually works out pretty well."

Bosa's zen mentality carries over to his offseason workouts. He stresses developing his overall athleticism rather than addressing any particular football technique. That regiment makes the first week of training camp something of a transition period, with Bosa joking he is focused on "lining up right."

Still, Hayward sees how Bosa approaches the game spilling over to the rest of the team. If Bosa can improve on his momentous initial returns, that bodes well for the Chargers as a whole.

"That's definitely contagious. You see that Melvin Ingram Jersey , you want to work just as hard as he does," Hayward said.

The New York Jets shook up the NFL draft on Saturday by soaring three spots to No. 3 overall in a stunning swap with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Jets acquired the third pick in a strong sign that they intend to get one of the top quarterbacks available. They sent the Colts their first-rounder – No. 6 overall – along with two second-rounders this year and a second-rounder next year to complete the massive deal.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said the teams had been discussing a potential trade since early in the week.

”They had an interest to move up to (No.) 3 and kind of went back and forth for the last four or five days,” Ballard said in a video posted on the Colts’ website. ”Talked to a couple other teams, but we still wanted to stay in position in that top 10 where we could still get a premium player. We feel like at (No.) 6, we’ll still be able to get a premium player.”

After losing out to Minnesota in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes at the start of free agency, New York re-signed veteran Josh McCown and agreed to terms with Teddy Bridgewater, both on one-year deals. But it was believed the Jets would still focus on finding a quarterback of the future with their first-round pick in next month’s draft.

By moving up to No. 3, New York assures itself of getting one of the top-rated quarterbacks available. USC’s Sam Darnold, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield are all considered potential top-five selections.

General manager Mike Maccagnan has been zeroing in on the QBs up close, attending the pro days of both Mayfield and Rosen. He also plans to attend the pro days for Darnold and Allen.

The Jets have been very active during the first few days of the NFL’s free agency period , which officially began Wednesday. In addition to the moves with McCown and Bridgewater Brandon Carr Jersey , New York signed cornerback Trumaine Johnson , running back Isaiah Crowell, kicker Cairo Santos and linebacker Avery Williamson , and agreed to terms with center Spencer Long. The Jets also re-signed cornerback Morris Claiborne, defensive lineman Mike Pennel, offensive tackle Ben Ijalana and safety Terrence Brooks.

The flurry of activity comes as the Jets look to improve on two straight 5-11 seasons and try to end a seven-year playoff drought. Getting a quarterback to build around was a priority entering this offseason – familiar territory for a franchise that mostly has struggled to find sustained success under center since the days of Joe Namath. The Jets have had 30 starting quarterbacks since Broadway Joe’s last game for them in 1976. The last time New York took a quarterback with a high first-round pick was 2009, when it drafted Mark Sanchez. After helping lead the Jets to the AFC championship game his first two seasons, Sanchez mostly struggled, and the likes of Greg McElroy, Geno Smith, Michael Vick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty and McCown have all started games in the years since.

But Maccagnan & Co. know there will be big-time pressure on them to make the correct choice at No. 3. Questions still surround the status of quarterback Andrew Luck’s surgically repaired right shoulder, leading rusher Frank Gore is a free agent and Indianapolis still needs to fix a leaky offensive line. The Colts also need improvements on defense after finishing 30th overall and 31st in sacks.

The Colts had done very little in free agency – until Saturday. They signed backup defensive end Denico Autry from Oakland to a three-year deal and already have lost two other key players: receiver Donte Moncrief, an occasional starter, and emerging cornerback Rashaan Melvin.

It is widely believed that the Colts were very interested in N.C. State defensive end Bradley Chubb with the No. 3 pick. Indianapolis still might be able to land the promising pass rusher at No. 6, especially if three or more quarterbacks are taken in the first five spots. That is, if the Colts don’t do some more wheeling and dealing before the April 26-28 draft with their plethora of picks.

”We’ll still be open if an opportunity – the right opportunity – presents itself at six to move down,” Ballard said. ”But right now, we feel pretty good. It would have to be a pretty attractive offer for us to move away from six because of the player we think we’re going to get.”

”Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues,” Mill said in a statement shortly before his release.

Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry said recently that he considers himself the best receiver in the NFL and he believes that Cleveland has the right pieces in place to help him prove that point.

Landry said Thursday that offensive coordinator Todd Haley is going to give him the opportunity to show he’s a “complete receiver all-around” rather than just a slot receiver. There’s an unspoken implication that he didn’t get those chances while with the Dolphins and Landry was more explicit in a comparison between the quarterback situations with the two teams.

“The quarterback play is so important Travis Kelce Jersey , which has got me that much more excited about Tyrod [Taylor] and [Baker Mayfield] and the way that they’re throwing the ball out here, it makes me that much more excited,” Landry said, via Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com. “It’s a lot better than what I had in Miami. ”I just know I gotta step up,” he said. ”I know I gotta fill big shoes. I don’t feel no pressure. I’m glad to be in this position.”

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Boston.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 35 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists before fouling out in overtime. Middleton had 31 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Malcolm Brogdon scored all 16 of his points after halftime.

After a muted start, things opened for Antetokounmpo. But he said he must do a better job the defensive end against Horford going forward.

”He knows what he’s doing down there,” Antetokounmpo said. ”Hopefully in Game 2 I won’t play on my heels and I’ll play more on my toes and be able to defend without fouling.”

Part of the reason the Bucks were in bad spots is because they were hampered by turnovers. They committed 20 Trent Brown Jersey , leading to 27 Boston points.

The game went to extra time following a wild finish in regulation that included back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Milwaukee was held to just two field goals over the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter as the Celtics built an 86-76 advantage.

The Bucks closed to 89-87 before Marcus Morris made a falling down jumper just inside the arc to make it 91-87.

It was 92-91 with less than a minute to play when a pair of free throws by Horford made it 94-91.

Antetokounmpo got free for a dunk. But Horford was steady again after being fouled, connecting on two more from the line with 15.2 seconds left.

Out of a timeout, Brogdon got free on the wing and drained a 3 with 10.3 to play to tie it at 96.

But after a Milwaukee timeout advanced the ball to half court, Middleton matched it with his own 3 over Brown as time expired.
