Trevathan appreciated his time in the Mile High City and being part of a Broncos draft class that also included defensive linemen Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson.

“My draft class, we made a statement,” Trevathan said. “We took it upon ourselves that we weren’t going to lose no close games. We were going to come in with the attitude: It was a new beginning for us. Our draft class did that. Along with some older guys. It was just our attitude. We believed in one another. We pushed each other.”

One Super Bowl title is nice. Another would be even nicer.

Last season, Trevathan led the Bears with 89 tackles and had two sacks. In the United States, the National Hockey League is indeed the least popular of the four major sports leagues, but that has not stopped the league from being very profitable and entertaining. For just over a century, the NHL has given us the best hockey players that the world has to offer, and as the decades have passed, those players have for the most part become a lot younger, faster, and skilled. As crazy as those first few hours were following McCarron’s trade from the Buffalo Bills to Oakland, the whirlwind hasn’t slowed down a bit since McCarron joined his new team.

He had new teammates and coaches to meet and an entire offense to learn in just over a week now that he’s Derek Carr’s only backup and could be thrust into action Monday night when Oakland opens its season against the Los Angeles Rams.

“It’s not the easiest thing in the world. I’m trying my hardest,” McCarron said. “I’ve been coming in really early, spending a lot of time staying late. God forbid something happens, hopefully I can go out there and handle it pretty well.”

The Raiders dealt a 2019 fifth-round pick to the Bills last Saturday for McCarron and then immediately cut E.J. Manuel and Connor Cook Josh Ferguson Jersey , who had been competing for the backup job.

Oakland had been anticipating McCarron might be available with Buffalo having drafted Josh Allen in the first round and also having Nathan Peterman in place.

“We kind of had our eye on him,” offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. “Had been evaluating him through the preseason with the thought that maybe there might be an opportunity for some of those quarterbacks or one of those quarterbacks on that team to become available. We had some intel on AJ from other coaches that had worked with him. But we liked the player. We’re happy to get him. He’s been good since he’s been here. He’s been a quick study in terms of picking up the offense. He’s been in the building from dawn to dusk every day. Just a real pleasure to have him right now.”

McCarron has been working extensively with quarterbacks coach Brian Callahan to learn a complex offense installed by coach Jon Gruden.

McCarron said it’s completely different than what he had been running in Buffalo all offseason but he is familiar with many of the West Coast concepts. The main job this week is learning the language and the formations that go with the offense.

“I do a pretty good job of managing all that,” McCarron said. “When it comes to learning football I think I’m pretty smart. You can only play so many defenses. It’s just being real familiar and knowing the ins and outs of the offense. God forbid I get in there, it’s not going to be perfect. But I know how to battle and keep trying.”

McCarron had hoped to be the starter in Buffalo after spending his first four seasons as the backup to Andy Dalton in Cincinnati. McCarron started just three regular-season games and one playoff contest for the Bengals but got a two-year contract from the Bills that included a $4 million signing bonus.

But that never materialized as the Bills went with Peterman as the starter until Allen is ready to take over, and McCarron now needs to sell the house he bought in Buffalo.

“It’s a business. There’s a lot of things that go on behind the scenes. It’s part of it,” he said. “I enjoyed my time there, even though it was for a cup of coffee and maybe a doughnut. The Los Angeles Chargers have signed kicker Caleb Sturgis to a two-year deal.

The Chargers announced the move Friday. Los Angeles also signed kicker Roberto Aguayo in January, and Nick Rose is still on the roster.

Sturgis spent the past three seasons with Philadelphia, but he missed the Eagles‘ Super Bowl championship run. After winning the starting job, he injured his hip in the regular season opener and went on injured reserve.

The University of Florida product spent his first two NFL seasons with Miami. He was outstanding for the Eagles in 2016, hitting 35 of his 41 field goal attempts.

The Chargers used four kickers last season while finishing last in the NFL in percentage of field goals made (66.7).

Ramsey has held his own and then some against a handful of the most dynamic receivers in the league: DeAndre Hopkins, A.J. Green, Antonio Brown, T.Y. Hilton, Keenan Allen, Larry Fitzgerald, Doug Baldwin, Marqise Goodwin and others.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Ramsey has the size, speed, athleticism, instincts and body control to stay with anyone. Gronkowski would create other issues, mainly because of his strength and agility.

Asked what advantage he would have against Gronk Adidas Nazem Kadri Jersey , Ramsey replied: ”Everything.”

The Jaguars certainly have faith in their trash-talking, second-year pro.

”If I had to bet on a corner to cover (Gronk), I’d put money on Jalen Ramsey for sure,” quarterback Blake Bortles said. ”I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve ever seen out of him. His physical tools and obviously his mental toughness and what he’s able to do throughout the game and kind of getting in guys’ heads and doing different things.

It wouldn’t be the first time a cornerback has lined up across from Gronkowski. Teams often do it when he shifts wide in hopes of getting a favorable matchup against a linebacker or safety.

Jaguars defensive coordinator Todd Wash, as expected, offered few hints about what could be in store for Gronkowski, who caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season.

”We have to get the right guy on him in man situations and obviously know where he is at in zone coverage,” Wash said. ”Nobody around the league has stopped him, so we have to have a plan. We feel very confident with our plan and we have to go in there and execute it.”

Is Ramsey covering Gronk part of the plan?

”In a basketball game, I think we would,” Wash said. ”But Jalen is a corner and we’re going to run our system. I think the last thing you can do is to go into a game like this and you try and reinvent the wheel. … Jalen is a good corner and he plays against wide receivers.”

Gronk is as dangerous as any receiver in the league, and the Jaguars know it. So don’t count out seeing Ramsey across from him at some point.

BOSIO FIRED

The Tigers fired pitching coach Chris Bosio on Wednesday Kevin Shattenkirk Jersey , saying he made insensitive comments to another employee of the team. General manager Al Avila said Bosio made the comments recently and they were brought to Avila’s attention Tuesday. Avila decided Wednesday to terminate Bosio’s contract after the team investigated the situation and spoke to all of the people involved. Detroit promoted bullpen coach Rick Anderson to replace Bosio. Roving pitching instructor A.J. Sager will be the team’s bullpen coach until Triple-A Toledo pitching coach Jeff Pico takes his place next week. The Tigers are set to wrap a four-game series against Oakland.

The Nationals try to solve the Phillies’ Aaron Nola five days after the right-hander won a 5-3 decision in Washington. Nola (9-2, 2.58) allowed two runs, four hits and three walks over six innings while striking out five in that game. Nola is fifth in the NL in ERA, and only Mets ace Jacob deGrom has allowed fewer home runs per nine innings than Nola (0.53) among qualified NL starters.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirms to The Associated Press the Indianapolis Colts have sought permission to interview Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier for their head-coaching vacancy.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity on Thursday because neither team has revealed this development, which was first reported by NFL.com.

The Colts have been forced to resume their coaching search after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels reneged on an agreement to accept the job by electing to stay to New England on Tuesday.

The 58-year-old Frazier completed his first season in Buffalo Customized Seattle Seahawks Jerseys , and served as a mentor to first-year coach Sean McDermott.

Frazier has spent the past 19 seasons coaching at the NFL level, including a three-plus year stint as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2010-13.

Mark Reynolds may have sent his manager toward a sleepless night.

How is Dave Martinez supposed to rest when he’s got to figure out whether Reynolds’ career night earned him another start Sunday?

Martinez said he’ll have to think about where to put the right-handed hitting Reynolds when the Marlins start a right-hander on Sunday. Martinez has other options at first base, including left-handed hitters Matt Adams and Daniel Murphy.

Washington has won three straight and scored a combined 35 runs since calling a players-only meeting on Wednesday after falling under .500 for the first time since May 2.

Reynolds (5 for 5) tied his career high for hits and equaled the Nationals’ RBI record.

Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the second inning into the same visitors’ bullpen where his walk-off homer landed on Friday. He followed that up with an RBI double in the second, a two-run single in the fifth, a three-run homer in the sixth, and a two-run single in the seventh.

”Yeah, that’s like a good two weeks,” Reynolds said. ”These things don’t happen often.”

Signed as minor league free agent in April, Reynolds is 12 for 23 with four home runs since June 29.

”I’ve seen him like this,” Martinez said. ”When he gets hot like this he can stay hot for a while, so we’ll have to figure something out, see if we can get him in tomorrow.”

Washington, which has won 14 straight against Miami, broke it open by batting around the order and scoring a season-best seven runs in the fifth inning.

”We haven’t had any success with them in a while now,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. ”They’re a good lineup up and down, but we’ve pitched better than this.”

Marlins: Rookie RHP Trevor Richards (2-5, 5.26 ERA) makes his first start against the Nationals in the series finale.

Nationals: RHP Tanner Roark (3-10, 4.60 ERA) is looking for his first win since June 6. Roark is 5-8 with a 3.99 ERA in 22 games against the Marlins.

After winning just six games a year ago as one of the NFL's big disappointments, the Oakland Raiders had plenty of needs in their first draft since bringing Jon Gruden back for a second stint as coach.

They opted to bypass some of the most highly regarded defensive players to take UCLA tackle Kolton Miller after trading down five spots to No. 15, hoping to bolster the offensive line in front of quarterback Derek Carr.

"He's a big man that can move his feet," general manager Reggie McKenzie said. "He's played left tackle and right tackle. He's been an offensive lineman pretty much his whole life. He understands the game. He's an excellent athlete who has great potential. We feel really good about adding him to the Raiders roster."

After the San Francisco 49ers took the top-rated tackle in the draft, Mike McGlinchey, with the ninth overall pick, the Raiders opted to move down from 10 even with talented defensive players Minkah Fitzpatrick, Derwin James and Tremaine Edmunds on the board. They traded down five spots with Arizona, adding a third- and fifth-round pick in the deal.

Oakland still went with an offensive lineman at No. 15, taking Miller, with James and Edmunds still available.

The Raiders weren't done getting help for Carr on the first day of the draft, trading the third-round pick they got from the Cardinals to Pittsburgh for talented but troubled receiver Martavis Bryant.

Bryant caught 17 touchdowns in 36 games for the Steelers, but was suspended twice for drug violations. He missed four games in 2015 and all of the 2016 season.

Bryant returned last spring but was quickly surpassed by JuJu Smith-Schuster on the depth chart. He asked for a trade in late September and was deactivated for a game after calling out Smith-Schuster in a post on social media.

The 6-foot-4 Bryant has the size and speed to give Carr a serious downfield threat and Oakland a better option at third receiver to go along with Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson. Bryant averaged 15.3 yards per reception with the Steelers.

"He's what you're looking for as a receiver Authentic Bradley Chubb Jersey ," McKenzie said. "He can play big, play fast and he makes plays. We think he can be a dominating receiver for Derek."

This is the Raiders' first draft since bringing back Gruden for a second stint in Oakland. Gruden replaced the fired Jack Del Rio after last season and was given a 10-year contract to become the head of the organization.

While McKenzie remained as general manager and was involved heavily in draft preparation, Gruden is the man who now has the final word on picks for Oakland. Offensive line coach Tom Cable was high on Miller.

Gruden has said the Raiders needed better play at right tackle to protect Carr, especially in a division that features elite pass rushers like Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram on the Chargers, Von Miller and first-round pick Bradley Chubb in Denver, and Justin Houston in Kansas City.

The Raiders signed Breno Giacomini to a one-year deal to play right tackle but Miller could take that spot while being groomed to move to the left side. Donald Penn turns 35 on Friday and is coming off a season-ending foot injury.

"I'm stoked," Miller said. "I'm ready to get going there and compete and learn from the older guys. There's a lot of experience surrounding me. I'm ready to embrace it."

Miller allowed two sacks and 16 total quarterback pressures in 579 pass blocking snaps last season, according to Pro Football Focus, ranking 17th in efficiency.

"When you're talking about pass protection and staying in front of your guy, that's what he does," McKenzie said. "He's got the length, he's got the great feet. You talk about getting to the second level and pulling. This guy has a lot of talent. We think in our scheme and coach Cabes working with him, he'll flourish."

The Raiders still have one pick in the second, third and fourth rounds, three in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Oakland also waived defensive tackle Darius Latham.

Pittsburgh has had great success against the Washington Capitals in the playoffs Carlton Davis Color Rush Jersey , but the Penguins will be challenged by the absence of a couple key players when the teams open a second-round series Thursday at Capital One Arena.

Center Evgeni Malkin, who led Pittsburgh in scoring in the regular season, and Carl Hagelin, a prime penalty-killer, have been ruled out for Game 1 because of unspecified injuries sustained late in the Penguins’ first-round win against Philadelphia, coach Mike Sullivan said Wednesday.

“Guys have to step up in different roles maybe,” Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said Wednesday. “I don’t think anybody has to put too much pressure on themselves. I think collectively we can find ways (to bridge the gap). Those guys aren’t easy to replace, but that’s what we’re faced with.”

Washington has one known injury. Forward Andre Burakovsky is out at least for the start of the Penguins series because of an undisclosed injury he got in the first round against Columbus.

The Capitals also have history working against them. They are 1-9 all-time in playoff series against Pittsburgh, including losses the past two seasons and in 2009. In each of those three years, the Penguins went on to win the Stanley Cup.

The Capitals don’t find that discouraging.

“There’s not a person in our locker room or on our coaching staff that doesn’t want to play the Penguins,” Washington coach Barry Trotz said. “It’s probably fitting. We’re actually quite excited about it. They’re two good teams. They always have been, and you get another match. It’s all good.”

Washington sniper and captain Alex Ovechkin has repeatedly declared, “I can’t wait,” since just moments after the Columbus series Womens Robin Lehner Jersey , and he expanded on that Wednesday.

“It’s just fun. That’s why we worked so hard all year, to be in this position,” Ovechkin said. “It’s a big challenge for us, especially against Pittsburgh. It’s always a rivalry, always lots of attention to the series, and it’s fun.”

Ovechkin, 32, who has never won the Cup or even reached the Eastern Conference final, figures the law of averages will catch up with the Capitals eventually and they will beat the Penguins.

“One day it has to happen,” he said. “If we want to get success, we have to beat Pittsburgh and move forward. They’re the most experienced team right now in the league. Lots of great players. It’s a huge challenge.”

The Metropolitan Division clubs split their four games during the regular season. Washington won the division, with Pittsburgh finishing second, five points back.

“I don’t think they’re going to change the way they play. They’ve done it all year long,” Penguins winger Phil Kessel said. “I don’t think at this time of the year you change much what you do.”

While the Penguins are set with goaltender Matt Murray Buccaneers Elite Jerseys , who has won two Cups and had two shutouts in the first round, Washington will start off with Braden Holtby, a former Vezina Trophy winner who struggled at times during the season and lost the No. 1 job at the start of the playoffs before regaining it during Game 3 of the Columbus series.

“He’s been professional,” Trotz said of Holtby. “When we made the decision to start (Philipp Grubauer), (Holtby) was all in. He just said, ‘If I get a chance to get in, I’m going to stop the puck for you.’ … When he got in, he backed his words up.”

The group of players vying for tight end snaps at Lions training camp will include Sean McGrath.

The Lions announced McGrath’s signing on Thursday. They waived Wes Saxton, who joined the team 10 days ago and obviously didn’t make much of an impression in that brief run.

McGrath comes to Detroit after spending the last two seasons with the Chargers. He played 31 games, started 11 times and caught six passes for 71 yards. McGrath had 26 catches for 302 yards in 16 games for the Chiefs in 2013 and also spent time with the Seahawks.

The Lions will have a new look at tight end this year with Eric Ebron off the roster. McGrath joins Michael Roberts, Luke Willson and Levine Toilolo as competitors for playing time.
