Shohei Ohtani won’t get a chance to experience the playoffs in his first major league season Orlando Cepeda Jersey , but he’s putting himself into solid contention for a big-time postseason award.Ohtani, who began the season as a pitcher and designated hitter before elbow problems limited him to offensive duties for most of the past two months, has been stacking up exceptional numbers at the plate over the past six weeks and making a case for American League rookie of the year honors. He’ll try to maintain his hot hand Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers at Angel Stadium.Article continues below ...Ohtani earned his second AL player of the week honor on Monday after going 9-for-19 with four home runs, a double, a triple and 10 RBIs in five games last week.“I feel like I’m progressing as a hitter right now, so I’m trying to gain as many experiences as I can while the games count,” Ohtani told the Orange County Register on Friday. He extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single and double in the series opener on Monday night, scoring a run and driving in another in the 5-2 loss to the Rangers, which snapped a four-game winning streak for the Angels (71-73).Ohtani is hitting .373 in his past 29 games with 10 home runs, five doubles, 29 RBIs and 23 runs scored, raising his average from .267 to .294 in that span.Overall, the Japanese star has 19 homers and 54 RBIs in 86 games. The Rangers (62-82) meanwhile have been receiving solid play from rookie first baseman Ronald Guzman. He came into Monday’s game with one hit in his past 12 at-bats, then hit a two-run homer in the second inning that gave the Rangers a 4-0 lead. It was Guzman’s 15th home run of the season.Last month, Guzman became the first Texas rookie to hit three home runs in a game, and he’s also hit a grand slam this summer. The Rangers are 10-3 when Guzman homers.Rangers left-fielder Joey Gallo delivered a two-run double in the second inning on Monday and a run-scoring single in the eighth to raise his RBI total to a career-high 85. Already, he’s the first Texas player with at least 35 home runs in back-to-back seasons since Mark Teixeira in 2004-05.Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced after Monday’s game that veteran relief pitcher Jim Johnson would make the start Tuesday, his first since his major league debut on July 26, 2006. Johnson (5-3, 3.81 ERA) has since made 666 relief appearances.Rangers veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon was recently moved to the bullpen, opening the door for Adrian Sampson to move into the starting spot on Tuesday.Sampson (0-0, 54.00) made his Rangers debut on Friday, allowing three runs (two earned) and four hits while retiring just one batter out of the bullpen in an 8-4 loss to the Oakland A’s.“We’re at a point right now where we have some players we’d like to take a look at that we haven’t seen at this level,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.Sampson, 26, made his only other major league start for the Seattle Mariners on Sept. 7, 2016, nearly getting through the fourth inning unscathed against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park before surrendering a two-out solo home run.The 2012 fifth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates ultimately left after allowing four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of the 6-2 loss. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The potential final out bounced off Joe Panik’s glove http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-keith-hernandez-jersey , and the San Francisco Giants couldn’t recover after that.Rougned Odor hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning, Robinson Chirinos drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th and the Texas Rangers rallied from six runs down to beat San Francisco 7-6 on Friday night. The Rangers trailed 6-4 and were down to their last strike when Shin-Soo Choo reached on second baseman Panik’s fielding error. Odor homered off closer Will Smith in the next at-bat, sending a shot over the right field wall and into McCovey Cove.Odor’s 16th homer was his first splash hit and the second in Rangers history. Mitch Moreland had the other on June 9, 2012.Texas scored the go-ahead run off former Rangers reliever Sam Dyson (3-3). Chirinos drew a four-pitch walk that scored Jurickson Profar, who started the rally with a one-out single.“(Dyson) lost his command there, but it was lost earlier,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We had the bases-loaded with one out in the eighth and couldn’t put the ball in play. Those things come back to hurt you. It’s a tough game to lose.”Cory Gearrin (1-0) pitched out of that eighth as part of two scoreless relief innings. He was a Giant when he collected his last win on July 1 against Arizona.San Francisco had a chance to extend a 6-4 lead in the eighth, but Gearrin escaped a based-loaded, one-out situation, striking out Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria.“Huge strikeout against Belt,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. “I think that was probably one of the biggest keys in the game.”Gearrin came over along with outfielder Austin Jackson in a trade with the Giants on July 8.“I felt good,” Gearrin said. “I’ve pitched in this stadium many times, so it wasn’t new to me being out there and being there in a situation with the bases loaded, it was fun. Those are the kind of games you want to be in.”Giants starter Derrick Rodriguez had another solid outing. The 26-year-old left-hander and son of Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez struck out four and gave up two runs, three hits and three walks.Jose Leclerc pitched a scoreless 10th inning for his seventh save. The Rangers trailed 6-0 going into the sixth, when Choo had a two-run single.Joey Gallo came up lame leaving the batter’s box after his broken bat single off reliever Mark Melancon scored Nomar Mazara with two outs in the eighth that made it 6-4. Gallo left the game for pinch-runner Carlos Tocci. He rolled his ankle and is day-to-day, Banister said.Gallo hit his 34th home run leading off the seventh on Giants reliever Reyes Moronta’s first pitch.OLD HANDSPudge Rodriguez was on hand to watch his son pitch, but he apparently didn’t come ready to contribute. A popup foul ball came right to Rodriguez behind home plate, but the 13-time Gold Glove Award winner let it fall through his hands. Derrick Rodriguez laughed when he realized pops had let one get away.TRAINER’S ROOMRangers: RHP Bartolo Colon (lower back strain) was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday. … INF Hanser Alberto was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday in a corresponding move.Giants: RHP Jeff Samardzija (right shoulder tightness), who has been on the DL since July 15, experienced soreness in his shoulder pitching on a rehab assignment game with Double-A Richmond on Wednesday, manager Bruce Bochy said. The 33-year-old was scheduled to meet with team doctors Friday evening. “A little concerned to be honest, he’s got some soreness,” Bochy said. “He’s not real close.” . RHP Casey Kelly was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento after Thursday night’s game. The Giants activated Rodriguez in a corresponding move.UP NEXTLHP Martin Perez (0-2, 6.93 ERA) will pitch for Texas on Saturday. The 27-year-old is winless in eight starts going back to April 29. A look at what’s happening around the majors Tuesday:SET FREERobinson Cano is set to return from his 80-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug agreement when Seattle plays at Oakland. The All-Star second baseman has been out since May 15 http://www.piratesfanproshop.com/authentic-sean-rodriguez-jersey , though he’s been playing in the minor leagues for the past week. Cano is ineligible for the postseason if Seattle makes it, but manager Scott Servais hopes the 35-year-old can help the Mariners get there as a versatile piece around the infield. Servais said the team will work Cano in slowly, getting him reps at first, second and third base.“We need to be smart in breaking him in,” Servais said. “He wants to get going, he wants to contribute right away. He’s missed playing, he’s missed his teammates and being around this whole thing. I know he wants to come in and do a lot. But again small little things.”Seattle entered Monday 1 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card.ROLLING RONALDRonald Acuna Jr. is the youngest player to homer in four straight games during the live ball era Felipe Vazquez Jersey , according to ESPN, and he’ll go for five when Atlanta hosts Miami. Acuna homered to lead off both ends of Monday’s doubleheader against the Marlins, making him the first to do that since Baltimore’s Brady Anderson in 1999 and just the fourth to do it overall, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.MAKING PROGRESSKenley Jansen is back with the Dodgers and preparing to return to action sooner than expected after being diagnosed last week with an irregular heartbeat. Jansen threw a light bullpen session Monday and will also throw Wednesday and Friday this week. Jansen expects to return much sooner than the initial projection of 4 to 6 weeks, though he says he may still require an ablation procedure on his heart this offseason. He had a similar operation in 2012.CENTRAL SHOWDOWNThe Cubs and Brewers begin a pivotal two-game series at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee is three games back of Chicago for the top spot in the NL Central after David Bote’s game-ending grand slam pushed the Cubs over the Nationals in the ninth inning Sunday night. Jhoulys Chacin (11-4, 3.91) will pitch for the Brewers against Jose Quintana (10-8, 4.28) Starling Marte Jersey , who gave up five runs in a 9-0 loss to Kansas City last time out.NOT VERY VERLANDERJustin Verlander tries to bounce back from his worst start of the season when Houston hosts Colorado. Verlander allowed six runs in two innings against the Mariners last time out before getting ejected for arguing a balk call. Verlander allowed three homers in that game and has given up 10 in his past five starts — compared to 12 in his first 20. German Marquez (9-9, 4.69) will start for the Rockies. PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have promoted another 20-year-old from the minors, calling up right-hander Bryse Wilson to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Braves purchased Wilson’s contract from Triple-A Gwinnett before Monday night’s game. Wilson will make his major league debut as the NL East leaders give their regular starters a rest.Wilson will become the third 20-year-old pitcher to start in his big league debut for Atlanta this season. Mike Soroka was 20 when he started May 1 against the Mets at New York and Koby Allard did it on July 31 against Miami.Braves rookie Ronald Acuna Jr., who’s also 20, was chosen as the NL Player of the Week on Monday after going 13 for 28 (.464) with four home runs in eight games.Wilson began the season at Class A Florida and went a combined 8-5 with a 3.23 ERA in 23 starts in the minor leagues. He was the Braves’ fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft.Veteran infielder Ryan Flaherty was designated for assignment to open a roster spot for Wilson. Flaherty hit .222 with two home runs in 76 games.

Masahiro Tanaka is one of the three candidates to start the New York Yankees‘ wild card game against the Oakland A’s next week.As speculation flies — among J.A. Happ Eric Sogard Jersey , Luis Severino and Tanaka — manager Aaron Boone hasn’t let the world know who it will be. Could it depend on where the game is played? They know the opponent, but you can’t have any more difference in ballparks than the one between Yankee Stadium and the Oakland Coliseum.Tanaka, who faces the Rays in the third game of a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at the Trop Wednesday, would have almost a full week off before next Wednesday’s wild card game — and has always benefited from extra rest.Article continues below ...The Yankees used a seven-run third inning to cruise to a 9-2 victory Tuesday night — their 97th win of the season, Severino winning his 19th of the year.New York is 2 1/2 games ahead of Oakland for the AL wild-card home-field advantage after the Athletics lost 10-8 in 11 innings against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.Tanaka, 12-5 with a 3.67 ERA on the season, is coming off a rough start against the Red Sox in New York. He is 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA lifetime against the A’s — 1-1 with a 4.91 in two starts in Oakland. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.20 ERA against Tampa Bay this season, 8-3 with a 3.56 in 13 career starts against the Rays, 4-2 with a 4.41 at the Trop.Monday, Boone said, “I think a lot of people have read too much into how Happ is set up right now.“Happ is very much in the picture as a possibility for us and one of those good choices … but how it lines up right now isn’t by design or anything.”Ryne Stanek will be the “opener” for the Rays Wednesday, with Yonny Chirinos getting the bulk of the work in relief.Meanwhile, there were all kinds of medical updates for the Yankees, who seem to lose a player every day at the very worst time.Didi Gregorius, who suffered torn right wrist cartilage diving into home plate Saturday, continued to feel better and even took grounders — without throwing — Tuesday. He sees the doctor Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone saying, “Hopefully that goes well, and it moves thereafter, but until that happens I think we’re all kind of speculating a little bit.“(Wednesday) is a big day. It’s been exciting to hear that he seems like he’s improving every day and you see the optimism with Didi, but I think he’ll see the doctor and then he can get a bat in his hand and really test it out.”Aaron Hicks, who left Monday’s game with left hamstring tightness, had a successful MRI but will rest at least until the club goes to Boston for the weekend. Boone said, “we feel like we dodged a bullet.”More trouble: Gleyber Torres was scratched Tuesday with tightness in his groin, expected miss just one game. “I thought it was the smart thing to do,” the manager said. “He’ll be available. I don’t think it’s a big deal. He certainly felt like he could have played, but I think it’s the right thing to do.”For the Rays, Ji-Man Choi made his debut at first base after playing exclusively as a DH and pinch hitter. But he only got as far as the third inning, leaving the game with concussion-like symptoms and an ear laceration after a collision at home plate with Gary Sanchez. Choi was bloodied and needed stitches in his ear. Before the game, the Rays announced catcher Michael Perez, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 31 with a hamstring injury, will not make it back this week after a setback.“I think Mikie, probably his season has come to an end, which is unfortunate,” manager Kevin Cash said. “Fluke play that happened. And I think we all, himself included, thought he would be back in shorter time. But for whatever reason, (that) hasn’t responded.”C.J. Cron is 3-for-6 (.500), Kevin Kiermaier 7-for-22 (.318) with a home run and Carlos Gomez 3-for-10 (.300) lifetime against Tanaka Keon Broxton Jersey , while Matt Duffy is 1-for-7 (.143) and Mallex Smith 2-for-11 (.182). ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bartolo Colon reached out and snagged the comeback liner while slipping into a squat on the mound. The portly 45-year-old pitcher managed to stay upright, with a smile on his face and a ball from his milestone victory secured firmly in his glove.Colon became the top winning pitcher born in Latin America, punctuating his 246th career victory with that nifty snag for the last out of his seven innings as the Texas Rangers roughed up Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners 11-4 on Tuesday night.“I thought (first baseman Jurickson) Profar was going to throw the ball away to the public, to the fans,” Colon said through a translator. “But I saw it and then I started laughing because it happened that way.”On his sixth try since earning his 245th win on June 30 to match the mark held by Nicaragua’s Dennis Martinez, the Rangers hurler from the Dominican Republic finally had the record to himself.“It was a long journey, but it finally came and it feels good,” said Colon, who got his last out against Dee Gordon on his 94th pitch.Colon (6-10) gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings. The portly and popular right-hander walked none and struck out one. He retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced after Seattle had two triples in the third, an inning after back-to-back homers by Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager .“True to I think the competitor in him, once we got the lead, you could see just the extra little gear that he put it into to get himself through those innings,” manager Jeff Banister said.“It took a while to get it, but I’m proud of him,” said Adrian Beltre, the active career leader with 3,131 hits. “He’s a great, awesome teammate.”Beltre, Jurickson Profar and Rougned Odor all homered off Hernandez (8-10), who allowed a career-high 11 runs — seven earned — in six innings. Odor also had a two-run double.Colon is 246-186 in 560 games since his big league debut with Cleveland in 1997, was the 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner while with the Angels and has won games for each of the 11 teams he has pitched for in his career. His 244th victory earlier this season pushed him past Hall of Famer Juan Marichal for the most by a Dominican pitcher.“I always give thanks to God and to my family, all the support that I have from them,” Colon said. When Beltre struck out in the second against his old friend and former teammate, Hernandez laughed while playfully pointing him back toward the dugout. Beltre grounded into a double play in the third, but his 468th career homer was a solo shot to straightway center in the sixth that made it 11-4.“I lost my command after the first two innings. Just leaving it in the middle of the plate and making a lot of mistakes,” Hernandez said. “That’s it. See the results.”Hernandez, whose 168 career wins are the most by a Venezuelan-born pitcher, struck out two and walked four. He was hurt by two errors by third baseman Seager that led to four unearned runs.“I was just bad tonight, didn’t catch them,” Seager said. The Mariners led 3-0 before Texas had a four-run third. Odor’s double made it 3-all and Elvis Andrus had a tiebreaking RBI single to extend the longest active hitting streak in the majors, and his career best, to 18 games. Profar’s three-run homer made it 8-4 in the fifth right after Seager misplayed Beltre’s two-out grounder. Odor’s two-run shot in the sixth was his 14th homer. Center fielder Cameron Maybin then made a running, leaping catch with his glove extended near the top of the wall to take a hit away from Andrus before Beltre put a shot over the wall.TRAINER’S ROOMMariners: Maybin was struck on the upper leg while waiting in the on-deck circle in the ninth inning when Chris Herrmann sliced a foul ball. Maybe appeared to be OK, even smiling briefly. Maybin then grounded out.UP NEXTYovani Gallardo, 6-1 since rejoining Texas in mid-June for the first time since 2015, starts the series finale against Seattle and lefty Marco Gonzales (12-6). While Gallardo has a 4.76 ERA in his past seven starts, the Rangers have averaged an MLB-best 11.57 runs per nine innings with the right-hander on the mound. No AL pitcher has more than his six wins in that span. Gonzales had won five starts in a row with a 1.57 ERA before losing Friday against Toronto.

CLEVELAND (AP) — His red socks pulled high to his knees http://www.tigersfanproshop.com/authentic-jack-morris-jersey , Jim Thome pointed his bat outward in his well-known stance before taking a swing and one last trip around the bases in a ballpark where his number is now on permanent display. On Saturday, the Cleveland Indians retired Thome’s No. 25 honoring the Hall of Fame slugger during an emotional pregame ceremony before hosting the Baltimore Orioles — another of the six teams he played for from 1991 to 2012.The festivities were capped with Thome, the major league walk-off home run leader (13), taking that final trot around the bases with his son, Landon, before being mobbed by his former teammates at home plate. His jersey number will be permanently displayed in the upper deck of Progressive Field between fellow Hall of Famers Bob Lemon’s 21 and Larry Doby’s 14, and just above where many of his 337 homers landed while becoming Cleveland’s career home run leader.“To have my jersey retired gives me the chills,” Thome said. “To see my number hanging in the rafters in the company of Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Jackie Robinson, Mel Harder, Larry Doby, Earl Averill, Bob Lemon and Frank Robinson, I don’t really know what to say. That’s some ‘Field of Dreams’ stuff right there.”Along with Landon, Thome was joined by his wife Andrea, daughter Lila and father Chuck. His former teammates and managers were on hand too, including Omar Vizquel, Kenny Lofton, Carlos Baerga, Charlie Manuel and Mike Hargrove.“To this day, these guys are my brothers and I’m so touched that you all would take the time to come today,” Thome said.Players from both teams were in the dugout for the pregame ceremony, with Indians players wearing high socks mimicking Thome’s distinct look. Before his retired number was unveiled, the team also presented Thome with two original Jacobs Field seats representing the two jersey numbers — 6 and 25 — that he wore as a member of the club Michael Fulmer Jersey , as well as a massive, 25-shaped photograph mosaic featuring pictures of the slugger throughout his career. The Hall of Famer already has a statue on the Progressive Field concourse that was unveiled during the 2014 season. That same summer, Thome’s number was unofficially retired when Jason Giambi surprised him by giving it up after Thome signed a one-day contract to retire with the team. No other player has worn the number since. It’s been a summer of celebrations for Thome, who was enshrined in Cooperstown last month. He was honored last week by the Chicago White Sox and will be honored by the Minnesota Twins next Saturday.Through 22 MLB seasons, Thome batted .276 and hit 612 home runs, putting him eighth on the all-time home run list. But his 13 years in Cleveland were when Thome had some of his best moments and memories.Thome broke in with the Indians as a third baseman in 1991. He was part of a young group of talented players who helped the Indians end a 41-year playoff drought and make the World Series in 1995 and 1997.Along with leading the club in home runs, Thome is also the club’s career leader in walks (1,008) and is second in career RBIs (937). His powerful swing helped the club rise from perennial laughingstock to one of baseball’s best teams in the 1990s.“The 90s were exciting times in baseball, and there was no place better than the corner of Ontario and Carnegie,” Thome said. “This organization from top to bottom is first class all the way. I was so proud to go into the Hall of Fame as a member of the Cleveland Indians.” SAN DIEGO (AP) San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list Monday with a sprained right elbow, and manager Bruce Bochy said there’s a ”strong possibility” he will need reconstructive surgery. The issue with Cueto, who has been limited to nine starts this year, has ”been lingering quite a while,” Bochy said before the Giants opened a two-game series against the Padres. ”We battled it, we fought this elbow issue, had it looked at, it’s just not going away. If that’s the case, where he does have surgery, Tommy John, then I’m sure he’d like to get that behind him. Again, I hate to talk about that because that has not officially been determined yet.”The 32-year-old Cueto is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA. He was on the 60-day DL earlier this year with the elbow injury. The Giants also placed infielder Pablo Sandoval on the DL with a strained right hamstring. Sandoval had an MRI exam and doctors in San Francisco were still reading it Monday afternoon to determine the degree, Bochy said.Sandoval is hitting .248 with nine homers and 40 RBIs.To take their roster spots, the Giants recalled infielder Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Sacramento and reinstated infielder Joe Panik from the disabled list.Bochy said right-hander Chris Stratton probably will step into Cueto’s spot in the rotation, although it hasn’t been determined which day he will pitch.—

KANSAS CITY http://www.bravesfanproshop.com/authentic-scott-kazmir-jersey , Mo. (AP) — A little break in the action did Javier Baez some good.Baez bounced back from a couple of strikeouts with a big home run, Cole Hamels pitched six strong innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Monday night.Baez has homered in back-to-back games for the fifth time this season and has six in his past 10 games with 14 RBIs.He struck out swinging in his first two at-bats before a 22-minute rain delay in the fourth.“I was so mad,” Baez said. “Not that I struck out, but it was pitches way out of the zone. After the rain delay I went out there with a different attitude and just trying to be patient. The first AB I was, like, damn, it’s my first time here and they’re yelling for me. I was really nervous and really happy.”Baez hit the first pitch from reliever Kevin McCarthy (4-4) in the sixth inning to center for his 25th home run, putting the Cubs ahead 2-1.“It was just a bad pitch,” McCarthy said. “It was down the middle and he got it. He’s just hot right now. He’s seeing the ball well and he got that one.”Baez doubled in the eighth to score Jason Heyward, upping his RBI total to an NL-leading 88.“He’s just a dangerous, dangerous hitter,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He’s going to attack. You don’t have to throw him strikes. He struck out the first two times with pitches way out of the zone. But he’s got 25 homers, so there are enough mistakes being made. But you make a pitch that’s not way out of the zone, he’s so talented and so strong, he’ll drive it out of the ball park.”Hamels (7-9) is 2-0 since the Cubs acquired him in a July 27 trade with the Texas Rangers. He allowed one run and seven hits.“I’ve faced these guys twice before this season,” Hamels said. “Pretty familiar with what they’re able to hit, what they’re not able to hit. I think noticing the curveball being pretty effective we’d like to stick with that and I think that was the case.”Alcides Escobar’s two-out second-inning single scored Rosell Herrera for the first earned run Hamels allowed at Kauffman Stadium in four career starts, covering 21 2/3 innings.Royals starter Jakob Junis worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth. Ben Zobrist and Heyward hit ground ball outs to end the inning. The Royals loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Hamels retired Hunter Dozier on a grounder to first baseman Anthony Rizzo on a full-count pitch.Junis was removed after five innings and 87 pitches, allowing one run and five hits while striking out eight, one shy of his career high.Zobrist led off the fourth with a triple and scored on Junis’ wild pitch.Cubs relievers Steve Cishek Kurt Suzuki Jersey , Brandon Kintzler and Pedro Strop limited the Royals to one single over the final three innings. Strop earned his eighth save in 11 chances, working a spotless ninth. The Royals have lost five straight and are tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the worst record in the majors at 34-78.ZOBRIST RETURNSZobrist, who hit .303 with two home runs in 16 postseason games for the Royals in 2015, was back in Kansas City for the first time since the club won the World Series. He received a standing ovation before his first at-bat.ROYALS LONG TRIPThe Royals were home for the first time since July 25, after a 3-7, three-city, 11-day trip to New York, Chicago and Minnesota. It included a rainout in New York, which was made up with a day-night doubleheader, plus two rain delays in Minnesota. “It seemed like it was a year,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.TRAINER’S ROOMCubs: 3B Kris Bryant (left shoulder inflammation) threw before the game for the first since going on the disabled list on July 24. “It was good to get him out there doing some baseball stuff. It was good for him and for his head, too,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “There’s no regress, but there’s no finish lines attached.” … RHPs Brandon Morrow (right biceps inflammation) and Yu Darvish (right triceps tendinitis) played catch before the game. Darvish is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Wednesday.Royals: OF Brian Goodwin (left groin strain) took batting practice. He is eligible to come off the disabled list Wednesday.UP NEXTCubs: LHP Mike Montgomery, who was a 2008 Royals’ first-round pick, starts the middle game of the series.Royals: Rookie RHP Brad Keller is 3-3 with a 3.90 ERA in 11 starts since moving into the rotation on May 30. MIAMI (AP) — Between innings, Miami Marlins left fielder Austin Dean gestured to the crowd for more noise, and rewarded the loudest fans by tossing a warmup ball their way.For a rookie like Dean, meaningless late-season games can still be fun. Dean homered and drove in three runs, and Miami won a battle of last-place teams by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-1 Saturday.Dean singled home a run in the fourth inning and hit his fourth homer in the sixth, raising his average to .219 in 96 at-bats. He was chosen the Marlins’ minor league player of the year earlier this week.“Words can’t describe how much fun it is to be up here,” the 24-year-old Dean said. “It’s everybody’s dream as a kid. To finally be up here is unreal. I’m one of those guys who is always going to have a smile on my face. Whatever happens next year http://www.bravesfanproshop.com/authentic-dansby-swanson-jersey , just count on me playing the game hard and trying to win every single game.”Another rookie, pinch hitter Gabriel Guerrero, hit his first career homer in the eighth for the Reds, ending their 19-inning scoreless streak. Guerrero is the nephew of 2018 Hall of Fame inductee Vladimir Guerrero.“It was amazing running the bases,” he said. “I was floating.”Jose Urena (8-12) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings to win his fourth start in a row. He said he was bothered by leg cramps but expects to make his next start, which will be his final outing of the season. In his past six starts, Urena has an ERA of 1.85, lowering his ERA for the season to 4.07.Drew Steckenrider came on to get the final out and strand two runners for his fifth save. The Reds fell to 8-24 on the road since mid-July.Anthony DeSclafani (7-7) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts but allowed five runs, three earned, in 5 2/3 innings.“I don’t really care about strikeouts,” DeSclafani said. “I’ll take 20 balls smoked right at me if it means zeroes.”DeSclafani committed a pair of errors in the fourth, which led to two unearned runs. It could have been a 1-2-3 inning, but he mishandled a dribbler by J.T. Realmuto, and Lewis Brinson and Dean delivered two-out RBI singles.Urena said Dean has been a welcome addition.“It’s really good when you see a young player like that give it everything they have,” Urena said.Slumping Miami rookie Brian Anderson singled in the sixth for his first RBI in nine games. The crowd of 12,559 was the Marlins’ largest at home this month.FLASHING LEATHERMarlins second baseman Starlin Castro made a diving catch of Scooter Gennett’s two-out liner to rob him of an RBI hit in the sixth.CLINCHERMiami improved to 4-2 against Cincinnati in 2018 and won the season series for the fourth consecutive year.TRAINER’S ROOMReds: SS Jose Peraza was back in the lineup after missing Friday’s game due to illness.UP NEXTThe Marlins play their home finale Sunday when RHP Trevor Richards (3-9, 4.95) pitches against Cincinnati RHP Michael Lorenzen (3-1, 3.03), who will make his second consecutive start after beginning the season with 42 relief appearances.

MIAMI — Perhaps the Miami Marlins have signaled that they are not going to take it anymore. Entering Friday Clay Buchholz Jersey , the last-place Marlins had lost seven straight games to the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves. But after beating the Braves 1-0 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday, the Marlins need a win Sunday to take a series from Atlanta for the first time this season.Overall, the Braves (72-57) lead this year’s series 13-5, but you couldn’t tell that from the past two nights. The Marlins (53-78) got great starting pitching from Dan Straily and Wei-Yin Chen — they combined for 12 scoreless innings — and also received nearly impeccable relief work.Article continues below ...Only a ninth-inning homer by shortstop Dansby Swanson on Saturday got Atlanta on the board the past two nights.“It shows you that we’re capable of beating a first-place team,” Straily said. “It really does a lot of good for the morale of our clubhouse.”On Sunday, the Marlins will start 22-year-old rookie right-hander Pablo Lopez (2-3, 4.42 ERA). The native of Venezuela began the season at Double-A Jacksonville and received a promotion to Triple-A New Orleans before beating the New York Mets 5-2 on June 30 in his major-league debut.Lopez is 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA in his one appearance against the Braves on Aug. 13. He will face Braves right-hander Kevin Gausman (8-9, 3.99 ERA), a former LSU pitcher who was the fourth overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.Gausman is 3-1 with a 2.00 ERA in four starts since the Braves acquired him from the Orioles on July 31. He has allowed just three runs in his past 22 innings.Braves pitchers have gone at least eight innings just four times this season — twice by Gausman, who has the ability to be a staff ace.Gausman will face a Marlins lineup that lacks big names but can surprise pitchers on occasion.Case in point is rookie third baseman Brian Anderson, who has also played right field this year.Anderson hit his 10th homer of the season on Saturday and has been a standout despite being lost in the giant shadows cast by fellow rookies Ronald Acuna of the Atlanta Braves and Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals.Anderson’s home run was pulled 415 feet to left field. The exit velocity was clocked at 106 mph.Miami also got a triple and a run scored Saturday from Rafael Ortega, a 27-year-old from Venezuela who can best be described as a career minor-leaguer. He entered the month with just 68 games of major-league experience but now is starting for the Marlins in right field. Miami also starts a rookie in center field (Magneuris Sierra), a rookie in left field (Austin Dean), rookie Anderson at third and rookie Lopez on the mound. In addition, the shortstop, JT Riddle, is in his second year in the majors and started this season in the minors. The Braves have a much better lineup on paper with Acuna (.930 OPS) in left field, Freddie Freeman (.920 OPS) at first base and Nick Markakis (.852 OPS) in right field. Right now, though, the Braves are slumping.“You hit a roadblock sometimes in baseball,” Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz told the ajc.com. “It’s unfortunate Andrew Chafin Jersey , but that’s why you play 162.” OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Having finished his warmups just before first pitch, Seattle lefty Wade LeBlanc wasn’t worried about stiffening up while watching the Mariners score five runs in the first inning. If anything, LeBlanc was more energized from the extra rest.LeBlanc pitched seven scoreless innings, Mitch Haniger hit his 23rd home run and Seattle jumped on the Oakland Athletics early and held on for a 7-1 victory on Thursday night.“I’m enjoying that,” LeBlanc said of the Mariners’ big inning. “You don’t ever want to go out to the mound when guys are rolling like that.”Robinson Cano had two hits and an RBI after being dropped down a spot in the batting order after second baseman Jean Segura was scratched. Dee Gordon and Ryon Healy added two hits apiece.Seattle had lost three straight and five of seven before taking the opener of this four-game series. The Mariners pulled within 4 1/2 games of the A’s for the second AL wild card. Oakland remains 2 1/2 back of Houston for first place in the AL West.“We struggled a little bit the last few days and the only way to get that behind you is to go out and play a good ballgame,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “Tonight that’s what we did.”Jed Lowrie had an RBI single for the A’s.LeBlanc (8-3) allowed three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He retired 12 of his final 13 batters to win for the second time in his last seven starts.Adam Warren and Nick Vincent retired three batters each to complete the four-hitter.“Wasn’t as sharp as the last start,” LeBlanc said. “Wasn’t as crisp stuff-wise but when you have a guy like (catcher Mike Zunino) back there and you have an offense putting up runs like that, it makes it kind of easy to go out there, be aggressive and miss over the plate as opposed to being overly careful.”Haniger homered off Frankie Montas (5-4) with one out in the fourth. He also singled leading off the game, extending his season-high hitting streak to 11 games. Haniger went into the day leading the AL with 38 hits this month. The Mariners scored five runs with two outs and took advantage of a throwing error by third baseman Matt Chapman in the first inning.“It wasn’t just him,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “We had an off-game all the way around.”Cano doubled and scored on Healy’s single before Ben Gamel drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 2-0. Two more runs scored on Chapman’s error. Gordon added an infield single to drive in Gamel. After Denard Span tripled to open the second, Cano singled to push the lead to 6-0.It was a disappointing start to Oakland’s 10-game homestand following a troubling start to the week when the A’s dropped two of three to Houston and placed two starting pitchers on the disabled list — Sean Manaea and Brett Anderson.ADJUSTING ON THE FLYHealy’s playing time has been reduced in the two weeks since Cano was reinstated after serving an 80-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs. He wasn’t in the original lineup Thursday but found out before batting practice he would play, giving him time to get in some pregame work.“I’m still trying to figure that out,” Healy said. “Trying to get a comfortable routine with the situation at hand.”ROSTER MOVESIn addition to Montas, the A’s also called up RHP J.B. Wendelken. RHP Ryan Dull and OF Nick Martini were optioned to Nashville.TRAINER’S ROOMMariners: Segura was a late scratch, one day after being forced out of the game in San Diego when he fouled a ball off his shin.Athletics: Anderson has been diagnosed with ulnar nerve irritation in his left arm.UP NEXTOakland RHP Mike Fiers (10-6, 3.15 ERA) is 3-0 in four starts since being acquired from Detroit on Aug. 6. Fiers needs one more win to match his career high set with Houston in 2016. Seattle RHP Mike Leake (8-8, 4.03) is winless in four career start at the Coliseum.

A look at what’s happening around the majors today:IN THE FIRST PLACEThe Red Sox and Braves begin a three-game series between division leaders at SunTrust Park. Atlanta rookie Touki Toussaint pitches for the second time in the majors — the 22-year-old righty threw six sharp innings on Aug. 13 to beat Miami.Toussaint was picked over fellow prospects Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright after winning his last three starts at Triple-A Gwinnett in impressive fashion. Boston leads the majors with 94 wins http://www.astrosfanproshop.com/authentic-brian-mccann-jersey , is 50 games over .500 and ranks first in the majors in runs, batting average and slugging percentage.“You dream of this as a little kid,” Toussaint said. “You want to be in the World Series pitching against the best.”Nathan Eovaldi (5-7, 4.35) starts for the Red Sox.PLAYOFF PREVIEW?The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics own the top two spots in the AL wild-card race by a comfortable margin going into their three-game set at the Coliseum. CC Sabathia (7-5, 3.36 ERA) starts for the Yanks, who are 4 1/2 games ahead of the A’s. Trevor Cahill (5-3, 3.60) pitches for the Athletics, who are 5 1/2 games ahead of Seattle. Cahill is 4-0 with a 0.85 ERA in eight home starts.CY YOUMets ace Jacob deGrom aims to enhance his credentials for the NL Cy Young Award when he starts at Dodger Stadium. DeGrom leads the majors with a 1.68 ERA despite an 8-8 record. Los Angeles is coming off three straight wins over Arizona by identical 3-2 scores that put the Dodgers alone atop the NL West.NO TRIP FROM TRIPLE-AByron Buxton was once the shining star in the Twins’ farm system, and he was a Gold Glove outfielder for Minnesota last season. Now he’s been told that he won’t be recalled from Triple-A Rochester.“We’ve talked about all the frustration and difficulties he’s had to endure,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said, “and when we came down to making the final decision, there were some things around the idea of how he played, injuries that he dealt with, his future. All those things came into play.”The 24-year-old Buxton played only 28 games from Minnesota this season and hit just .156.TIGER TRYMichael Fulmer (3-10, 4.71 ERA) will look to win for the first time in 2 1/2 months when the Tigers visit the Chicago White Sox. He is 0-5 with a 5.90 ERA in seven starts since his most recent win June 14. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — After a monthlong swoon, Rhys Hoskins and the Philadelphia Phillies are ready to make one final push for a playoff berth.Hoskins became the seventh-fastest player to hit 50 career home runs and the Phillies kept pace in the NL East with a 4-0 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night.Zach Eflin and five relievers combined on a six-hitter and Odubel Herrera added a two-run homer for the Phillies, who won consecutive series for the first time since July 25 and stayed 5½ games behind division-leading Atlanta.Seven of Philadelphia’s final 11 games are against the Braves, including a four-game series beginning Thursday night in Atlanta.“We’re in a pretty unique, exciting position that doesn’t happen that often. As a competitor Josh Reddick Jersey , that’s all you can ask for,” Hoskins said. “It’s going to be a fun, really, really competitive, really, really intense series.”Hoskins’ opposite-field solo shot against Noah Syndergaard in the first inning was his 32nd homer of the season and 50th in 192 career games. Only Rudy York (153), Mark McGwire (161), Gary Sanchez (161), Ryan Braun (171), Aaron Judge (174) and former Phillies slugger Ryan Howard (182) reached 50 quicker, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.“I think it’s kind of an arbitrary stat, but it’s cool to be mentioned in some of the same sentences as some of the guys who have done it before me,” Hoskins said. The 25-year-old Hoskins later added his 35th double, and Jose Bautista had a pinch-hit RBI double in the fifth off Jerry Blevins.Eflin (11-7) struck out nine and allowed three hits in five innings. Luis Avilan, Victor Arano and Adam Morgan each went one inning.Aaron Loup allowed a leadoff single to Jay Bruce in the ninth before Pat Neshek got the final three outs of Philadelphia’s 11th shutout. New York (70-82) was blanked for the 12th time and assured a second consecutive losing season.“Over the last two years it’s been really difficult as a player,” Syndegaard said. The right-hander gave up both homers and four hits in four innings, matching his shortest outing of the year on April 4 — also against Philadelphia. Syndergaard (12-4) posted a 5.75 ERA in four starts against the Phillies this year.“He wasn’t missing by much but he was just off the plate all night and they ran his pitch count up,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “I thought they had a pretty good approach against him again.”Following a lengthy slump that knocked the Phillies out of first place, they’ve won four of six and manager Gabe Kapler wants his team thinking playoffs.Players entering the clubhouse were greeted with a message in both English and Spanish that read Tyler Clippard Jersey , “This is not over. It’s going to take hard work, heart and pride. Together we can do this.”Before early batting practice was over, Atlanta had finished off a 7-3 victory against St. Louis that snapped a four-game skid and reduced its magic number to six to clinch the NL East. But the Phillies answered ahead of their biggest series of the season.“We have a job to do in Atlanta,” Kapler said. “We’re prepared for it. We’ve been thinking about it quite a bit.”TRAINER’S ROOMMets: INF Wilmer Flores, experiencing pain in both knees, was sent back to New York and scheduled to undergo tests Thursday. . Bruce made his 11th start at first base and first in five games.Phillies: INF Asdrubal Cabrera (strained left calf) didn’t start, but pinch-hit and drew a walk in the sixth.WHEELER DONEThe Mets will skip RHP Zack Wheeler’s final two scheduled starts as a precaution, ending his breakout year.Wheeler, who missed two full seasons following Tommy John surgery before returning for 17 starts last year, went 12-7 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 starts while throwing 182 1/3 innings. After the All-Star break, Wheeler was 9-1 with a 1.68 ERA.“I made some adjustments and was able to sort of take off,” Wheeler said. “Hopefully, I can carry that into next season.”BORAS-BOUNDHoskins confirmed an NBC Sports Philadelphia report that he’s hired star agent Scott Boras. Hoskins won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2023 season.UP NEXTMets: LHP Jason Vargas (6-9, 6.47 ERA) moves back into the rotation Thursday night and will oppose RHP Max Scherzer (17-7, 2.53) in the opener of a four-game series at Washington.Phillies: RHP Vince Velasquez (9-11, 4.26) tries to stop his skid Thursday night at Atlanta. Justin Verlander is set to make his long-awaited return to Detroit as a member of the Houston Astros. And his new team is on another impressive run.The Tigers traded Verlander late last season after over a decade in Detroit — a stretch that included two American League pennants Stephen Strasburg Jersey , four division titles and an MVP award for the hard-throwing right-hander in 2011. Now he’s scheduled to take the mound Monday night at Comerica Park on what should be an eventful evening in Motown, to say the least.“They’ve got Monday Night Football that night, too. So we’ll see what happens,” Verlander said.Indeed, the Tigers will host Houston while the Lions open their season across the street against the New York Jets. That may take some of the attention off Verlander’s return, but it should still be an emotional atmosphere at the ballpark.“I’m sure he’s had this series marked on his calendar all year,” Detroit catcher James McCann said. “We all know how much he’s meant to this team and these fans.”Verlander helped the Astros to a World Series title last year, and this season, he’s 14-9 with a 2.73 ERA. Houston had a seven-game winning streak snapped when it lost to Boston in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday night, but that defeat came after the Astros took the first two games in the series against the team with baseball’s best record.Houston has a major league-best 3.10 ERA, which would be the lowest in the AL since the Yankees finished the strike-shortened 1981 season at 2.90. It would also be the second straight season an AL team led the majors in ERA, after Cleveland did it in 2017.The Astros lead second-place Oakland by 2 ½ games in the AL West in the only race that’s all that compelling in the AL. Boston leads the Yankees by 8 ½ games in the East, and Cleveland could clinch the Central sometime this week. The battle for the second wild card isn’t all that close either, with the Athletics 7 ½ games up on Seattle.Verlander hasn’t pitched at Detroit since the trade, but he did face the Tigers earlier this season in Houston. Detroit hit four home runs off him and beat the Astros 6-3 .Elsewhere around the majors:SLIPPINGThe National League’s postseason race was probably bound to thin out. The Nationals never made much of a push and have traded some significant contributors since the non-waiver deadline, and the Pirates are 7 ½ games behind the second wild card — even after five straight wins. The Phillies are currently 4 ½ out of a wild card. They trail NL East-leading Atlanta by the same margin. Philadelphia is 2-6 this month and dropped costly series this past week against the lowly Mets and Marlins.HIGHLIGHTEven at altitude, Trevor Story’s 505-foot home run Wednesday night was impressive. Colorado beat San Francisco 5-3, and Story hit three homers totaling 1,380 feet , according to Statcast.LINE OF THE WEEKKansas City rookie Jorge Lopez came within three outs of a perfect game Saturday night in a 4-1 victory over Minnesota. He allowed a walk and a hit to start the ninth, then was taken out after 110 pitches. The Los Angeles Dodgers would love to use these games away from Dodger Stadium as a fast road to a National League West title. So far, though, the Cincinnati Reds are providing quite the roadblock. The Dodgers were coming off two wins in a key three-game series against the first-place Colorado Rockies when they began a three-game series in Cincinnati on Monday — seemingly with a chance to build up some quick wins against a last-place team that came in 22 games below .500.Article continues below ...Instead, the Reds improved to 5-0 against the Dodgers this season by winning 10-6, riding NL batting leader Scooter Gennett’s four hits and three RBIs. Eugenio Suarez homered off Dodgers starter Alex Wood, who was roughed up for seven runs (six earned), and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Newly acquired reliever Ryan Madson (1 inning http://www.nationalsfanproshop.com/authentic-gio-gonzalez-jersey , 4 hits, 3 runs) wasn’t much better.Surprisingly, Los Angeles has a losing record against two of the NL’s three last-place clubs, the Reds (0-5) and the Miami Marlins (2-4).“If they’re (the opponent) is a playoff team or not, it doesn’t matter too much to us,” Gennett said. “Hopefully, we can look (at the end of the season) and see we had a good last month.”The Dodgers need a much-better start Tuesday night from left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu, who has pitched well with a 4-2 record and 2.16 ERA. The problem is that he has made only 11 starts because of an ongoing problem with a groin injury that sidelined him from May 2 until Aug. 15.Ryu will go against the unpredictable Luis Castillo (8-12), the Reds right-hander who is capable of delivering an excellent start or an ineffective one. He pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals in a 4-0 win on Sept. 1, but between that start gave up 10 runs, seven earned, in 8 1-3 innings in losses to the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres.Ryu made one of his poorest starts his last time out, giving up five runs (only one earned) and an alarming 10 hits in six innings of a 7-3 Dodgers loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday. The rest of his line looked good — eight strikeouts, no walks — but it was a subpar outing for a pitcher the Dodgers very much need to produce in the final three weeks of the season.“I didn’t think we played good defense behind Hyun-Jin and I thought the way he threw the baseball was better than the linescore,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said afterward. “We didn’t give ourselves a chance. There were plays we usually make, you could just look around the diamond. Whether it’s added pitches or a run that scores that shouldn’t. For us, at this point in time, we’ve got to play better baseball.”They certainly didn’t Monday night. Wood fell behind 2-0 in a span of three batters in the first inning, walking Billy Hamilton and hitting Jose Peraza with a pitch ahead of Joey Votto’s two-run double on his 35th birthday. Gennett followed a batter later with an RBI single and scored on shortstop Manny Machado’s error on Brandon Dixon’s grounder.“They’ll continue to go at you offensively and you’ve got to score as much as you can,” Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. They did, too, as the Reds made it 10-4 against Madson in the sixth on Gennett’s RBI single and Tucker Barnhart’s two-run single. The Dodgers scored twice in the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out, but reliever Jared Hughes got Yasiel Puig to line into a double play.“Any win right now is good for us,” Gennett said. “We’re trying to finish the season strong and get some confidence to carry into the offseason and into spring training.”The Dodgers got closer Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat) back Monday after he was advised to skip the Rockies series, and they recalled former top prospect Julio Urias, a left-hander who is recovering from shoulder surgery in 2017. He had a 5.40 ERA in 11 rehabilitation appearances in the minors.

ARLINGTON http://www.stlouiscardinalsteamshop.com/authentic-vince-coleman-jersey , Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is still out of the lineup because of his troublesome left hamstring, but still on the active roster and hoping to avoid a third trip to the disabled list this season.“That’s the question right now. We want to wait a couple days,” the 39-year-old Beltre said Thursday.Beltre aggravated the hamstring Monday night when scoring from second base on a bloop single to left-center field. The active career hits leader didn’t play Tuesday night before the Rangers had a day off.“Medically, it’s a grade 2 (strain). But physically, I don’t feel that bad,” Beltre said before the opener of a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.“It’s not something that’s going to take you six weeks to get back. Hopefully, in the next couple days, it’ll show some improvement. If it’s going to 10 days (on the DL), just 10 days.”The Rangers activated right fielder Nomar Mazara from the 10-day disabled list. He hadn’t played since the All-Star break because of a sprained right thumb. Mazara was back in the lineup, batting fourth.Outfielder Willie Calhoun was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock. Calhoun hit .275 with nine RBIs in 22 games with the Rangers after being called up July 20 when Mazara was formally put on the DL.Beltre missed 12 games while on the disabled list from April 25-May 8, and was back only five games before returning to the DL on May 14 and missing 16 more games. Beltre missed 61 games last season for two DL stints, first for right calf tightness and then the left hamstring late in the season.“I think it’s definitely the first time that it’s happened three times in one year. Obviously, we tried to do everything in our power to not let it happen, but it’s baseball,” he said. “Stuff happens. Sometimes you can’t prevent it.”The four-time All-Star, in his 21st big league season and the last year of his Rangers contract, was asked if he would treat things different being at this stage in his career.“That brings the question, is this going to keep happening more often? Is it worth it to fight it back?,” Beltre said. “It’s a sign of maybe … time to get close to, you know, say bye to you guys. But again, it’s something that I’ve been dealing with all my career, since I was 20 years old.”Beltre is hitting .278 with seven homers and 41 RBIs in 86 games this season. He is a .286 hitter with 3,137 hits and 469 homers in 2,900 career games. ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves lost the first two games of their interleague series in Boston at the end of May and faced Red Sox ace Chris Sale in the final game Orlando Cepeda Jersey , making their chances of avoiding a sweep seem fairly bleak.Mike Foltynewicz, though, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning while outpitching Sale and now the right-hander takes the mound against the Red Sox on Wednesday, this time at SunTrust Park, again trying to help the Braves avoid a sweep.Boston (96-44) improved its interleague record to a major league-best 13-3 with a 5-1 victory Tuesday night and dropped the Braves (76-62) to 8-11 against the American League.Article continues below ...The Braves have won only one interleague series in Atlanta since 2014 and their lead in the National League East is down to three games with Philadelphia’s victory in Miami.Sale doesn’t return from a stint on the disabled list until next week and the AL East-leading Red Sox will call on right-hander Hector Velazquez for the series finale against the Braves.Velazquez (7-2, 3.24 ERA) has made six starts to go with his 33 relief appearances, but hasn’t gone as long as five innings since April. His last start came Aug. 24 at Tampa and he gave up eight runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings.Foltynewicz (10-9, 2.80 ERA) will be the starting pitcher expected to have the upper hand this time.Given an early lead thanks to a three-run homer by catcher Tyler Flowers, Foltynewicz dominated the Red Sox at Fenway Park three months ago, allowing three hits and a run over seven innings while striking out seven and walking one.“He was real efficient with his pitches and stayed on the attack,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said after that game. “I just loved how he stayed after it. He was throwing a lot of strikes. His stuff was really good.”Foltynewicz, who made the All-Star Game for the first time, allowed a total of five earned runs in his first five starts of August before giving up five runs (four earned) in a home loss to the Cubs to end the month.A questionable balk victimized Foltynewicz in the second inning and then he allowed a two-run pinch homer in the sixth. The balk was called when Foltnewicz made a slight flinch, apparently as he spit.“Who knows what you really do out there?” Foltynewicz said. “You’re just in the zone. You can do a bunch of different habits and stuff. I just basically hawked a loogie.”Velazquez made two relief appearances against the Braves in May, allowing five hits and one run over 2 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out two.Velazquez’s last appearance was against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, when he gave up a run on two hits in an inning of relief.“We’ll see how long Hector goes,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It might be similar to (Monday).”Nathan Eovaldi was pulled after 3 1/3 innings in the series opener and the Red Sox totaled eight pitchers in the 8-2 victory. The Boston rotation will be back more to normal when David Price, hit by a comebacker last week, starts against Houston at Fenway Park on Friday and Sale (shoulder strain) comes off the disabled list in the likely role of an “opener” for now next week.Sale, who threw a bullpen Tuesday, is expected to pitch either in the Toronto series or against the New York Mets, although with a limited pitch count.“He’ll probably throw another (bullpen) in three more days and then we go from there,” Cora said. “Not sure if he’ll be the ‘opener’ but looks like next homestand.”Sale is 12-4 with a 1.97 ERA and Price is 14-6 with a 3.60 ERA.

ARLINGTON http://www.philliesfanproshop.com/authentic-chase-utley-jersey , Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor keeps feeling better. Joey Gallo needed a break.Odor hit his third career grand slam and Gallo and Robinson Chirinos had back-to-back homers in a seven-run fourth inning as the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 11-3 Friday night.Odor has avoided saying he feels good throughout a hot streak since the All-Star break during which he has batted .404 (21 for 52) with six homers to raise his batting average 31 points to .270.“Feeling better,” he said again. But how does it feel to hit a grand slam? “Great!”Both Odor and Gallo have homered in each of the first two games of a four-game series between last-place teams. Texas has outscored the Orioles 28-11 in those games and has won six of seven.“Odor right now is pretty well locked in, not just offensively but defensively,” Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.Right fielder Gallo and second baseman Odor combined for an out on Renato Nunez’s double to the right-center field gap in the eighth inning. Gallo threw to Odor well out on the outfield grass, and he fired a strike to catcher Chirinos to put out Trey Mancini trying to score.Gallo leads the Rangers with 28 homers but has struggled to improve his batting average, currently .193.“The All-Star break helped,” Gallo said. “It’s tough when you’re here every day and struggling. We went to Mexico and got away. We didn’t worry about baseball. Then you get back and you kind of miss it.”Rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado (2-1) won his second straight start for Texas after a loss in his major league debut.Jurado left after giving up six hits, two walks and two runs while striking out three in five innings.“A really good night for him,” Banister said. “Cruised through four. … “We kind of learned who he is against major league hitters.”Another rookie, Baltimore’s David Hess (2-6), didn’t make it out of the fourth inning in his 10th major league start. The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Hess made two errors on the same play, allowing Odor to score from first base.Hess hit Adrian Beltre with a pitch leading off the fourth. Gallo then homered to right field, and Chirinos followed with another homer to the back of the lower deck in left.“Beltre getting hit by the pitch, I think that kind of gave them a little bit of fire,” Hess said. “And then I just left some balls over the middle of the plate and they didn’t miss them.”Donnie Hart relieved Hess with the bases loaded and one out. Odor hit a 1-0 pitch into the right field seats.Baltimore scored twice against Jurado in the fifth with two-out RBI singles by Jonathan Villar and Tim Beckham.Orioles rookie Evan Phillips, acquired from the Braves on Tuesday, retired all six Rangers he faced, striking out three.“Just as advertised,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Late, live fastball Richie Ashburn Jersey , threw a good changeup tonight, that was impressive.”Andrus’ eighth-inning single extended his hit streak to 14 games, the majors’ longest current streak.TRAINER’S ROOMOrioles: RHP Jhan Marinez went on the 10-day disabled list. He strained his right hamstring while warming up between innings and left Thursday’s game. RHP Phillips replaced Marinez on the 25-man roster.Rangers: CF Delino DeShields was a late scratch because of a headache. Carlos Tocci replaced DeShields. … OF Nomar Mazara (sprained right thumb) has been on the disabled list for two weeks. Texas manager Jeff Banister said he hoped to decide this weekend whether to send Mazara on an injury-rehab assignment.WHICH IS BETTER?Gallo has four assists in eight games as a right fielder. Is it a bigger thrill to hit a home run or to throw out a runner?“Throwing somebody out without a cutoff guy is pretty cool, especially if you don’t bounce it,” Gallo said. “A walk-off home run, that’s a pretty fun feeling as well. They’re about the same.”UP NEXTOrioles RHP Dylan Bundy (7-9, 4.53) faces Rangers LHP Mike Minor (7-6, 4.73) in a matchup of the teams’ wins leaders. PHOENIX (AP) — The way things have been going for the Arizona Diamondbacks, being 1 1/2 games out of first place in the NL West seems almost unimaginable.Yet that’s where Arizona stands after a 5-3 win over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night. Star slugger Paul Goldschmidt hit his 33rd home run and the Diamondbacks held off the NL East leaders in a matchup of slumping playoff contenders. The Braves lost for the fourth time in five games and had their edge over Philadelphia cut to 2 1/2 games. The Diamondbacks, who had lost five of six, moved within 1 1/2 games of Colorado atop the NL West.“We’ve lost a lot of tough games like these, and it’s just nice to see us come out on the other side of it,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “Nice to see these guys smile, nice to see these guys have some fun, nice to have that good feeling after playing a game.”Johan Camargo homered, doubled twice and drove in two runs for Atlanta. Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta made a sliding catch on Camargo’s shallow fly ball for the final out, emphatically pumping his fist to celebrate.Goldschmidt homered for the ninth time in 27 games, sending an opposite-field drive to right for a solo shot in the first. He reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 2 for 2 with three walks.Daniel Descalso’s two-run single highlighted a three-run third inning that put Arizona ahead 4-1.Patrick Corbin (11-5) gave up one run and four hits in six innings, striking out nine. Brad Boxberger got two outs for his 32nd save.“All these games are important. They’re all going to be a battle Chuck Klein Jersey ,” Corbin said. “You just have to make quality pitches.”Braves starter Kevin Gausman (9-10) lasted 4 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs and seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.“I was making some pretty bad misses trying to go away and missing in on a guy,” Gausman said. “I didn’t throw enough offspeed pitches for strikes.”Camargo made it 1-all with his 17th homer and second in two days, connecting in the third.“A highlight reel,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Camargo. “Kid’s playing unbelievable. Just really maturing, growing. He’s come so far and he’s showing us he’s a legitimate guy.”Peralta hit an RBI single in the third as Arizona strung together three straight singles to take a 2-1 lead. After a walk to A.J. Pollock, Descalso bounced a hit through the right side to drive in two more runs. The Braves battled back in the eighth against reliever Archie Bradley, who gave up an RBI double to Camargo and consecutive infield hits to Nick Markakis and Tyler Flowers to load the bases with one out.Brad Ziegler relieved, and an error by shortstop Nick Amhed gave Atlanta another run that made it 4-3.Bradley was visibly unhappy in the dugout after another bumpy outing. He’s had several over the past week.“When you’re going through a little bit of a rough patch, it seems like the ball doesn’t bounce your way,” Bradley said. “But I made good pitches, they just beat me.”Ziegler protected the lead, striking out Adam Duvall and getting Dansby Swanson to fly out with the bases loaded.“There’s no lead that’s safe with them,” Ziegler said of the Braves.Eduardo Escobar’s sacrifice fly gave the Diamondbacks an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.END(ER) OF THEIR NIGHTSBraves OF Ender Inciarte, apparently unhappy with the strike zone, was ejected after striking out swinging at a pitch in the dirt to end the top of the fourth. He said something to home plate umpire Doug Eddings and was tossed, then proceeded to kick at the dirt and shout some more in Eddings’ face before going back to the dugout.“Sometimes guys get frustrated and voice opinions on things. It happens,” Snitker said.Eddings also ejected Braves hitting coach Kevin Seitzer in the eighth when he yelled from the dugout after Duvall was called out on strikes.UP NEXTBraves: RHP Julio Teheran (9-7) makes his team-high 28th start on Saturday against Arizona. The Braves are 16-11 in his starts this season.Diamondbacks: Saturday’s scheduled starter RHP Clay Buchholz (7-2) has a 0.64 earned run average in his last four starts, but carries a 6.06 ERA in three starts against Atlanta in his career.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have promoted yet another prospect from the minor leagues Abraham Almonte Jersey , and this time it’s the best one yet.The Padres selected the contract of 21-year-old Luis Urias, one of baseball’s top prospects who is expected to be their second baseman of the future.Urias was set to bat second against Felix Hernandez in his big league debut in the opener of a two-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.Urias’ promotion comes as the rebuilding Padres are on pace to lose 100 games for the first time since their infamous Fire Sale season of 1993.The Padres brought up Urias even though Triple-A El Paso has qualified for the Pacific Coast League playoffs.“We felt like he’d done enough in the month of August,” manager Andy Green said. “He played really, really well. He was kind of challenged at the beginning of the month to kind of step up his game because there was the belief he had more inside of him and he did a great job. He’s a guy we’ve been talking about all year that the time would come, and when would the time be, and we got to the point where felt the time was now. It gives him the opportunity to play over a month in the big leagues the rest of the year.”The arrival of Urias marks the beginning of another wave of talent coming from the prospect-rich farm system to the big league squad, which at 50-83 has the worst record in the NL.He hit .296 with a .398 on-base percentage with Triple-A El Paso. He hit eight homers and drove in 45 runs, with 67 walks and 109 strikeouts.Urias signed with the Padres as an international free agent in December 2013 when he was 16.His first call after the promotion was to his parents in Mexico.“I always thought it would be a great feeling. It was something that I cannot explain right now,” Urias said. “I was so happy http://www.royalsfanproshop.com/authentic-justin-grimm-jersey , especially when I called my dad and my mom. That was a feeling that I will never forget.”The Padres have one of worst offenses in the majors. Green knows bringing in one guy won’t radically change the production.“He’s a guy we believe in,” Green said. “We love his on-base skills. It’s a good spot in the lineup. Just in general we’ve struggled to get on base, and he’s always done that very well. Whether he starts off doing that well in the big leagues or it takes a little while, we believe he’s going to do that very well for a long time.”“I’m the player that I can get on base,” Urias said. “I think that’s my type of play, to put the ball in play and score a couple of runs.”Green said Urias will also play some at shortstop. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Colorado slugger Trevor Story is receiving treatment for right elbow inflammation in Arizona, and the Rockies remain encouraged that he will return soon.Manager Bud Black says Story was feeling better Wednesday. The All-Star shortstop may participate in some baseball activities at the team’s spring training facility in Phoenix on Thursday.Black said the team would check on Story on Friday. He is listed as day-to-day and no timetable has been set for his return.Story tweaked his elbow on a throw in the first inning of an 8-2 loss to the Dodgers on Monday night and aggravated it on a swing in the fourth.Colorado began Wednesday 1 1/2 games behind the NL West-leading Dodgers.Story this year became the first shortstop in major league history with at least 40 doubles, 30 home runs and 25 steals in a season.
