Never would I be revisiting something this early again. There’s too much life out there. The sun feels too good. After revisiting Scharping, I feel better about the pick than I originally did. His size is a problem for defenders. Even if he catches defenders with his body instead of his hands, his anchor should be good enough to swallow up most defenders.via GfycatIn the run game, Scharping is better than I thought he was. It’s hard watching college video and seeing so many blocks that have zero resemblance to the pro game. So many of Scharping’s run blocks were backside shielding, not true backside double teams, or one-on-one blocks with zero effect on the play itself. He can block down pretty well to move the defensive tackle inside and off the guard. He can reach the defensive end. These are good things. Scharping does have issued with vertical movement, though. Ed: I see reports say he’s limited as an athlete, but still has “sideline-to-sideline” play-making ability. How can that be?Owen: I think in Wisconsin’s 3-4 defense Deandre Baker Jersey , both Ryan Connelly and T.J. Edwards were falsely represented as “sideline-to-sideline” defenders, because each of them could get to the sideline on the side of the field they were on. Often times, he’s the type of guy to make his play, and walk back to the huddle to do it again. He’s a no-nonsense type of guy who will lead by example. He’s always been very respectful to the media both in availability, and in other avenues. One other thing to know about Connelly, is that in 2018 he played with an abdominal injury. He told B5Q that he injured it during summer and fall camp, but played with it throughout 2018, despite the ab muscle tearing off of the pubic bone. He missed the Pinstripe Bowl in December due to finally having the injury taken care of, but played all 12 of Wisconsin’s games this season, even the Rutgers game, which was shortly after learning his mother had been diagnosed with cancer. Ed: Are there any particular highlights from his career at Wisconsin that stand out?Owen: Ryan Connelly burst onto the UW scene during the LSU game at Lambeau in 2016. Connelly was the fourth inside linebacker on the roster, but after an injury to Chris Orr, Connelly came in and made a huge play to tackle Leonard Fournette short of a first down on a third down, and from then he’s been a fixture in the Badgers’ defense. He had a touchdown against Penn State in the 2016 Big Ten Championship Game as well. Against Ohio State in 2017’s Big Ten Championship Game, Connelly was all over the place attempting to contain J.T. Barrett, and against Iowa this past season Connelly made multiple plays, including a play where he avoided the fullback and submarined the runner short of the first down to force a field goal. If some recent reports suggest anything, their need to trade up to No. 2 is not near as necessary as before. Reports came out over the weekend from SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano that the Giants are prepared to roll with Eli Manning in 2019...and 2020. While this doesn’t prevent them from selecting a quarterback, the fact they are willing to give Eli Manning two more years indicates they aren’t about to trade up some real estate for the No. 2 pick. That of course is speculation. After all, they could be planning to take a quarterback and have him sit for two years. It worked for Patrick Mahomes to sit for one year behind Kansas City Chiefs starter Alex Smith, and the same idea can work here. Well except for the fact the Giants know what they want to draft with that No. 6 pick: a pass rusher. If true, this starts to make a bit of sense why the Giants were so stubborn in getting that No. 2 pick from the 49ers in exchange for Odell Beckham Jr. I’ve written extensively on how the Giants trading up to the second pick to draft a quarterback was a bit of overkill given the draft order. Considering they could easily get Dwayne Haskins at their sixth spot if they stayed put (based on some mock drafts) the furthest they would need to go is three, but the Oakland Raiders at No. 4 could have been the partner to give them their quarterback. If they wanted No. 2, and were prepared to roll with Manning (and draft a pass rusher) it means the Giants may have been after one of the trio of Nick Bosa, Quinnen Williams, or Josh Allen Richard Sherman Color Rush Jersey , depending on what the Arizona Cardinals were after and what the Giants want for their defense. These recent reports hurt the value of that No. 2 pick because if the Giants are after a pass rusher, history shows they won’t pull the trigger near as easily as, say, they would for a quarterback.
