The Dallas Cowboys managed to end regulation tied with the Houston Texans before they lost due to a combination of failed execution and, in hindsight at least, a really bad coaching decision on fourth-and-one. But the truth is, it wasn’t really that close, as the Texans outgained and outplayed the Cowboys almost the entire game. Only some really boneheaded calls of their own plus some big defensive plays at just the right moment kept Houston from winning it pretty handily. They moved the ball up and down the field, mostly at will, while the Cowboys had the same problems with third down conversions and settling for field goals that we have seen all season. It was a hot mess of a performance by the Dallas offense, and it showed that there is a clear way to shut them down. You slow down the run game and rush Dak Prescott relentlessly. It is the biggest weakness they have, and Houston exploited it almost to perfection.Ezekiel Elliott only had 54 rushing yards in the game, which put the pressure on the passing offense. That is still not working well, especially on the road in front of a hostile crowd. It is not just one thing, either.First is that Prescott is not handling the pressure well. He tends to be inaccurate and indecisive with the ball, or misses what look like better options to throw the ball. With the Texans pass rush coming at him hard all game, the improvement of week four evaporated. The first interception off the hands of Tavon Austin came on a pass that, while possibly catchable, was clearly too high and too far in front. Had that ball been on target where Austin did not have to leap for it, not only would it not have gone over to Houston, it would have been a first down and Austin had a lot of room to use his speed and elusiveness. Too many other passes from Prescott were much the same. Though they were in the strictest sense balls that could be caught, they required the receiver to adjust way too much. It was especially frustrating to see him failing at this while Deshaun Watson was escaping similar hard rushes, but throwing accurately and making big plays.Meanwhile, the receivers certainly did not help at times. There were notable drops, at least two of which killed drives in a game where just one more score could have delivered the win for the Cowboys. The wide receivers as a group are just not having an impact. Ezekiel Elliott once more had the most catches with seven Youth Tyron Smith Jersey , but with only 4.3 yards gained on average, that did not help. Clearly the Texans were ready for the screen pass to him, blowing it up when they tried.Surprisingly, the best receiving threat for the Cowboys may now be tight end Geoff Swaim. He had 55 yards on three catches. That is still far too low a total for your top receiver, but he did have the one long play when he was used in a screen pass. That caught Houston a bit off guard, and Swaim showed again that he can run very effectively after the catch. And Rico Gathers had the third longest catch of the game to excite his fans.But all that is not enough with the wide receivers not doing much at all. And now there is a bit of dissension emerging over just who is the problem there. Allen Hurns is disputing the claims that the wide receivers are just not getting open.That certainly looks like some tension in the locker room, which is never a good thing.Things don’t stop with the quarterback and the receivers, though. The offensive line is also letting the pressure come through far too quickly. Joe Looney has done a much better job filling in for Travis Frederick than expected, but you still have to question if he and rookie Connor Williams are not making things a little too easy on the pass rush. In any case, Prescott was under fire all game. He was only sacked twice, but took six hits and evaded several other rushes with his mobility. It was exciting to see him do his own spin-move escape from J.J. Watt to find Tavon Austin for a 44-yard gain, but that was more an exception, as a moving Prescott was usually not making connections.Meanwhile, let’s throw some shade at Scott Linehan. One of Prescott’s sacks came just before the two-minute warning of the fourth quarter, and it looked like a really bad play for the situation. The pass rush had been coming hard all game, limiting the time to get a throw off, but this play involved a double fake on play-action. If it had decoyed the defense, it might have worked. But there had been no indication prior that the Texans were biting on those fakes, and by the time he was able to look downfield, all Prescott could see was that pass rush bearing down on him. It still seems too much like Linehan is determined to run plays without taking the situation into account. A slow developing pass play was the last thing the Cowboys needed or even seemed capable of doing. So that is how you thwart the Dallas offense. A good pass rush plus the ability to keep Elliott from gashing you. And that is a big problem, because in the next six games, Dallas faces Jacksonville, Washington (twice) Color Rush Allen Hurns Jersey , Tennessee, and Philadelphia - all teams that have been very solid doing just those things so far this season. That is shaping up to be a really hard stretch, and if the Cowboys don’t find some kind of solution, the season could be pretty much done for by mid-November.No sugarcoating here. The rest of the NFL knows how to stop the Cowboys, and way too many of them are fully capable of doing it. The chorus of voices that want Scott Linehan to lose his job as offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys has remained loud. The 7-1 stretch run to secure the NFC East crown and a home field game to start the playoffs is seen, by some, as more despite him than because of him. No matter how the playoffs go for the Cowboys, many still believe the team would be better off without him.I think the process of cutting those ties may have already started.Let me be perfectly clear. This is an opinion piece. It is based on personal observation, some information and hints dropped elsewhere, and is absolutely colored by my own thoughts on the OC. But there is an interesting picture that emerged during the win over the New York Giants that has just been reinforced by some things since. Dallas used a completely different offensive plan to win the regular season finale from what we had seen in the fifteen prior games. Part of that was the absence of Ezekiel Elliott as he rested for the game against the Seattle Seahawks. Linehan bases his scheme on the run game to set everything else up while attempting to beat the opposing defense into submission. Without Elliott, the alternatives were to just try the same with Rod Smith and Darius Jackson, or do an about face and put the offense on Dak Prescott and the passing game. Given Prescott’s rather impressive performance, it certainly looks like door number two was chosen. This was the second-best total yardage of his career at 387, and just the fourth time he has exceeded 300 yards. Only the overtime win over the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this season was greater. It also was a career best in passing touchdowns with four. And his running ability was not a factor. This was all on his arm, including the spectacular fourth-and-fifteen touchdown throw to Cole Beasley that won the game.It wasn’t just the volume of his output. It was how he did it. Look at this eye-opening tweet.To me, at least, this was the most important bit of evidence that this was not the Cowboys attack we had seen to that point. All season, Prescott had avoided throwing to the middle of the field like it was lava. Let me offer the opinion that he did so because he was told to. Linehan tends to conservatism and part of that is avoiding turning the ball over. That part of the field is a place where interceptions are more likely, because defensive backs can move into it from both directions. Linebackers also live there. That complicates things for the passer, who has more he has to avoid. Indications have been that there is a certain lack of trust in Prescott’s ability to make those reads and throws Color Rush Leighton Vander Esch Jersey , so they were simply off the table. That helps protect the ball, but it gives up a significant part of the field, limiting the team’s options without the defense really doing anything to cause it.Against the Giants, it was time to pull up a chair at that part of the table and dig in. The result was a career day for Blake Jarwin, as he had by far his best performance and was acknowledged with NFC Offensive Player of the Week recognition - the first tight end from Dallas to be selected for that since the award was founded four decades ago. More subtly, that game also saw Beasley re-establish his reputation as the most clutch receiver on the team. In addition to the game-winning, one-knee-down grab, he caught all six targets for a total of 94 yards and one each key third-down and fourth-down conversion besides the TD. As mentioned, not having Elliott on the field was one reason to pivot to the passing game as the way to move the ball, but the overall situation also was important. It was, as mentioned endlessly leading up to it, a meaningless game. Dallas was locked into the fourth seed, and the decision to rest Elliott, Tyron Smith, and Zack Martin reflected this. But since it was meaningless, it was also the perfect time to experiment with something different. If the move to throwing the ball, especially into a mostly unused part of the field and to a player like Jarwin who had been less than impressive to date, did not work out, no harm was really done. But it worked. And brought another real benefit. Now the Seahawks have something very new to plan for. Will the Cowboys revert back to their Zeke-centric approach? If they do, and it works, fine. But if it falters, they have an effective adjustment ready, one they just got to work on in real game conditions against a decent passing defense. The Giants yielded 7.6 yards per attempt last season Youth Dak Prescott Jersey , just behind Seattle’s 7.5. And they gave up 24 touchdowns through the air, where the Seahawks surrendered 26. Those are close, and New York was better at intercepting the ball, with a 16 to 12 advantage over Seattle. It is hard to imagine a better time to successfully roll out something that new than the last game before the playoffs. It was both a pragmatic and daring approach. Both of those are not exactly traits that Linehan has exhibited. He has at times seemed very stubborn about doing what he is comfortable with even when it isn’t working, and has long carried a label of being too conservative. The argument about whether things like the red zone woes are due to coaching, play-calling, or execution is still valid, but it is reasonable to say at least part of the issue falls squarely on his shoulders.Oh, and the Cowboys scored touchdowns on 75% of their four trips to the red zone in New Jersey, so that was one more way things were rather different for the offense. Maybe this was just Linehan deciding he had to do something different. Perhaps he was trying to ensure he kept his job. Well, here’s a tantalizing tidbit.Even if Linehan was still calling plays (which it did appear was the case), if it was indeed Garrett’s game plan, that is a potentially huge signal. It would reflect at least a loss of confidence in the former’s ability to make that kind of adjustment. It could be the first step in moving away from Linehan. That does not make it a done deal. Linehan may get in line with a new direction. Or Garrett may just keep a bigger role in the game-planning while still relying on Linehan to call the plays during games.There is also a question about just where the impetus originated for such a move. Did Garrett do it on his own, or did someone (cough) Jerry Jones (cough) lay down a little law here? That is something that may never be known, but it might - might - be a strong hint of the direction things might be headed after the postseason does end for Dallas.Clearly, this is all circumstantial evidence. But while a successful run (meaning at least winning Saturday’s wild-card game) might extend both Garrett’s and Linehan’s tenures, it also could signal that Linehan’s star is finally fading beyond redemption. One other thing is how this all will affect Prescott’s future. He is the quarterback, and there is absolutely no indication that the team is even considering another path. But that Giants performance was a major demonstration of just what he might be capable of. Better coaching that more fully utilizes his strengths and helps cover for his weaknesses would pay major dividends for the team. It looks like he may be getting just that when the Cowboys can really use it entering the playoffs.We still have to see how that all plays out. You see guys like Trent Richardson get moved for a first round pick or even Carlos Hyde get moved for a fifth overall pick. If it could go wrong it did go wrong for the Titans as they opened the Mike Vrabel era with a 27-20 loss to the Dolphins in Miami. Believe it or not there were some winners in what was among the most depressing Titans games of my lifetime (which is saying something).WinnersDarius JenningsDespite all the miserableness surrounding this game Youth Austin Johnson Jersey , it’s hard not to feel good for Jennings who had a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown to give the Titans some hope late in the game. It was the first kickoff Tennessee has returned for a touchdown since Darius Reynaud in 2012.Dennis Kelly, Kevin Pamphile, and the offensive lineKelly got the start in place of Jack Conklin and largely went unnoticed which is a great thing for an offensive lineman. Pamphile stepped in for the injured Taylor Lewan and played well too. Overall, the offensive line did a nice job, allowing no sacks and helping the backs to 4 yards per carry (which would have been much more had Henry’s long touchdown run not been called back for a phantom hold).Dion LewisLewis’ debut went exceedingly well as the Titans offseason addition rushed 16 times for 76 yards and a touchdown, adding 5 catches for 35 yards through the air. That included a few clutch 3rd down pickups. Lewis looked every bit the dynamic playmaker that he Titans need him to be moving forward.Corey DavisDavis led the Titans with 6 catches for 62 yards and regularly looked like the team’s best receiver. There was one miscommunication issue, but he otherwise appeared to be in sync with Mariota. LosersMarcus MariotaLet’s just start here. Mariota started pretty good, but fell apart before leaving with an elbow injury during the second half. His first half numbers weren’t bad, but they didn’t tell the whole story. Mariota underthrew a wide open Luke Stocker who would’ve scored if not for the ball placement, then later in the drive threw behind Corey Davis on a speed out on 4th and goal. Again, the pass was complete, but Davis scores with ease if the ball is accurate. It wasn’t all bad from Mariota early, but those two throws cost them 7. Things would get worse for the Titans signal caller as a hit from William Hayes after a Mariota handoff left him with an elbow injury. He tried to play through it, but threw back to back interceptions — one on a pass floated over Rishard Matthews and one on a poorly thrown screen pass to Dion Lewis — before giving way to Blaine Gabbert who would finish the game. We don’t know what Mariota’s injury is, but the Titans are obviously in huge trouble if he’s not ready to go for the home opener against Houston next week. InjuriesBeyond Mariota, Taylor Lewan (concussion) and Delanie Walker (leg) both left with injuries. Walker’s leg injury was ugly and he’s probably done for the foreseeable future — if not the entire season — which is obviously a huge blow to the Titans offense. Lewan’s injury was suffered on a cheap shot from Dolphins defensive end Andre Branch after the first Mariota interception. Of course no flag was thrown on Branch, because... reasons. Adoree’ Jackson also suffered a shoulder injury at the end of a nice punt return, though he did return to the game later on. Again, we don’t know the severity of Jackson’s injury, but he will likely be on the injury report for most of this week. RefereesI’m not sure what it is about Miami, but the Titans have been absolutely hosed by refs there the last two years. Last season it was the ridiculous offensive pass interference call and the “fumble” that just happened to fly 20 yards down field that was later returned by the Dolphins for a touchdown while they had at least 13 players on the field. This year it was a bogus unnecessary roughness call against Malcolm Butler and a completely absurd holding call against Delanie Walker that negated a long Derrick Henry touchdown run (while Walker got facemasked). The Mariota injury also came on questionable (at best) non-call as he was hit low and late while carrying out a play fake. Titans FansTitans fans got treated to the longest Navy Josh Kline Jersey , most depressing game in Titans history today. Multiple weather delays, injuries to the team’s best players on offense, and another losing round of penalty roulette made this one to forget. It’s an unfortunate way to kick the Mike Vrabel era off and I’d expect it will make for a rather lackluster crowd for the home opener next Sunday. It’s hard to imagine a more deflating start to a season. Mike VrabelFor all the good intentions about keeping players healthy and fresh to start the season, Week 1 was a stark reminder that injuries will come no matter how careful you are. Vrabel’s careful approach also showed up early in another way. The Titans tackling was horrific during the first half. They settled down a little bit later in the game, but it looked like a team that hadn’t had many reps with live tackling in the approach to the season.Additionally, there were a few questionable game management decisions from the Titans new coach. I liked the decision to go for it on 4th and goal early even though the execution let him down there. However, the Titans squandered many of their timeouts, including using one on defense on a 3rd and 21 late in the 4th quarter when they were trying to mount a comeback. It was a debut to forget for Vrabel. The NFL's revision of the catch rule figured to grab the spotlight this season.Then the league altered the regulations on using the helmet when making contact on both sides of the ball, basically making it a 15-yard penalty no matter where on the helmet strikes an opponent. Even players on offense and linemen in the trenches are subject to being flagged, with potential fines and ejections for particularly flagrant hits by lowering the helmet.Players are upset. Officials are deeper under the microscope. Fans are wondering why replay review isn't part of the entire process.Suddenly, the Dez Bryant and Jesse James non-catches are non-issues. It's all about the helmet hits, which unquestionably need to be removed from the game in a similar way that tacklers launching to make hits pretty much has been eliminated in the pros.Here's where things stand from a variety of constituencies as we head toward the kickoff of the 2018 schedule:THE LEAGUENFL executives were encouraged that the flags thrown for helmet-initiated hits dropped from 51 through the opening two weeks of the preseason to nine for Week 3 鈥?when many regulars get on the field, though in a limited capacity. Officials have been instructed not to flag incidental or inadvertent contacts with the helmet or facemask by defensive or offensive players. The deeper we get into games that count, the better those with the whistle or ball in their hands or the guys attempting tackles will have a handle on what's legal."These are necessary changes where the rules come in," says Troy Vincent, the NFL's football operations chief and one of the hardest hitters in the league when he played defensive back from 1992-2006. "As stewards for the long term, the well-being of the players comes first."Adds Giants owner John Mara, a long-time member of the competition committee that advises rules changes for teams to vote on:"I think officials and players will adapt to the rule, that is what happens every time we have a change based on player safety. There's an outcry at the beginning that it will change the game, and it never works out that way; statistics don't bear that out at all. Players should not lower their heads is what it is all about, and we should not have some of the injuries we have seen."THE OFFICIALSThe rule change has placed the men in stripes in even sharper focus. Now, a bit more judgment has been added, with decisions made in split seconds."It's still a work in progress because officials need to learn to instinctively read and react to this type of hit that they've never looked at before as a foul," says recently retired referee Terry McAulay, now an analyst for NBC. "So there is going to be some learning curve yet to come, but I think they're in a much better place than they were a week ago."One somewhat puzzling question remains: Why isn't video replay involved when some of these calls, especially if they lead to ejections, can be game changers?Well, it actually is, on a limited basis. Should a player be ejected for initiating helmet contact, Al Riveron and his staff at New York headquarters can affirm or overrule the ejection."Our charge is, No. 1 player safety: Make it safer in all ways," Riveron says. "No. 2, make sure we still have a product that is entertaining. And No. 3, find a happy balance with replay and how much it gets involved. We always stop the game to get it right."Mara believes replay could play a further role if officiating the rule becomes too problematic."I certainly think are a lot of people who would support adding those calls to instant replay and making them reviewable," he says, "and I think that's another discussion we could have in the offseason if it is warranted."THE DOCTORS AND RESEARCHERSThousands of hours and millions of dollars of data gathering, research, technological innovations and testing helped lead to the new rule. Every penny will have been well spent if usage of the helmet as a weapon disappears."It's an offshoot of all that work," says Jeff Miller Youth Kevin Byard Jersey , the league's executive vice president of health and safety initiatives, whose department works with medical professionals, researchers and equipment manufacturers. "An identification of what causes concussions and why there was a troubling increase in them."We see patterns, the increased velocity of the hits, the positioning of the head and neck ... that increase in force and magnitude of a hit, and not just with the crown of the helmet."Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's medical director, believes all the data helped construct a comprehensive story that required immediate action."Everything we saw said we must act on this," Sills says of the injury rate for helmet-first hits. "There was a sense of urgency when the data was so compelling to do something now on this."THE COACHESFor decades, the head was taught to be part of the tackling process. That has changed 180 degrees 鈥?at least in the NFL 鈥?as the consequences of that technique became so clearly grim and far-reaching.NFL coaches 鈥?yes, even those who don't win with regularity 鈥?are the elite of the profession. Still, changing a culture that was part of football for so long, and might still be at lower levels of the sport, is challenging.Throw in that some coaches were caught by surprise by the wide-ranging change, and others aren't truly certain when flags will fly, and there's concern on every NFL sideline.New Titans coach Mike Vrabel, a Super Bowl-winning linebacker, narrated a league-distributed video on tackles that are kosher and which are outlawed. Yet his team was among the most penalized early in the preseason."It's frustrating because I'm not doing a good enough job explaining to them what they're calling," Vrabel said during training camp. "I think they look at me like I'm nuts when I say, 'This is what they're looking for. This is what they're calling.'"We just really have to start watching. The helmet thing extends drives. Penalties are going to lead to scoring opportunities; 15 yards is an explosive gain. ... To continue to give them the 15-yard penalties is frustrating because I have to do a better job of making sure these guys aren't using the top of the helmet."Another worry among coaches is whether the calls on offensive players will be equitable to those on defenders. Former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, now a CBS analyst Youth Marcus Mariota Jersey , recalled seeing three flags thrown on the defense for helmet-first hits when it was obvious to him that the ball carrier initiated the contact."It's a great rule," he says. "They just have to not over-officiate it. They shouldn't use the posture of getting in a protective position by the running back before he gets tackled, yet he's the one making contact with the helmet."THE PLAYERSUltimately, as anyone involved in any sport will say, the players have to make the plays. And make sure they are permissible plays.It's not going to be easy at first. According to 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, it won't be easy ever.Or fair."It's an idiotic rule, so there's no need to go down that road," Sherman says. "There's no way you can tackle and play football. I could tackle like that if I was standing still, got on my knees, no one was moving and I was tackling bags or something. But to ask you to do that at full speed?"Adds Texans safety Tyrann Mathieu: "It's going to be extremely difficult. Obviously, guys are trying to take the initiative to really go about it the right way, but sometimes it's like, what do you expect a guy to do? Hopefully, we'll get it corrected and like I said, hopefully it doesn't take too much money from the guys."I just don't know when it's a foul, when it's clean. I have no idea." |
