Most coaches assume good things w

KANSAS CITY Dustin Colquitt Jersey , Mo. — ill happen when their defense generates enough pressure on an opposing quarterback that he must flee the pocket — a sack, an incomplete pass, a short run at worst.Broncos coach Vance Joseph has a very different feeling when Patrick Mahomes goes on the run.Just eight games into his professional career, the Kansas City Chiefs‘ quarterback has already earned a reputation for being just as good outside the pocket as inside it.In fact, some of his biggest plays during the Chiefs’ win in Denver a few weeks ago came when Von Miller and Co. forced him to scramble.“Your plan has to trap and contain him and keep him where you want to be,” Joseph said, “but you have no plan for when he breaks the pocket. That’s going to be effort and want-to, and he outran most of our big guys and shook off most of our pass rushers. There’s no exact plan when he’s out of the pocket.”That’s because Mahomes has displayed a natural talent far beyond his years. You see, most young quarterbacks escape pressure and then immediately look to limit their losses. They may chuck the ball out of bounds or take off for a short gain and then slide to protect themselves. But what sets veterans such as Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady apart is that they have the uncanny ability to keep their eyes downfield, forcing defenses to continue covering even as they find open field. Then they have the arm strength and accuracy to deliver the ball from odd angles and off-balance positions.Joseph explained that Mahomes has those same traits.“It’s very rare,” he said. “He understands the pressures of when the pocket breaks, he can do damage. Most young quarterbacks are looking to gain 4 or 5 yards and slide, and he is not. He’s trying to make a play, and the problem with this guy is he can throw across his body left or right.“So how can you combat that?” Joseph said. “You can’t.”The Broncos did a decent job of it in their meeting earlier this season, when they had the advantage of a home crowd. But Mahomes made some adjustments in the second half and began picking apart their secondary, helping the Chiefs rally for a 27-23 victory.“As a quarterback you always feel more comfortable in the pocket,” Mahomes said, “especially when I’m getting the protection I am now. But at the same time I like to get out of the pocket and give those wide receivers some time to make plays.”That’s because the Chiefs have some dangerous playmakers catching the ball.Whether it’s tight end Travis Kelce causing matchup problems with linebackers Rashad Fenton Kansas City Chiefs Jerseys , running back Kareem Hunt out of the backfield or speedsters Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins on the outside, Mahomes knows that if he’s able to give them enough time, somebody is bound to get open.“Mahomes, he can make all of the throws. I think with him you just try to pick and choose whether you can make your plays,” Broncos cornerback Chris Harris said.“I’ve been watching film on everybody else, and everybody else playing these guys are scared. They’re not challenging them. (Hill) is just running around free. That’s not how we play. When we play them, we get up, we challenge them, put hands on them, and that’s how we come to play. We’re not coming to be scared and let guys run for free all day.”The Broncos acknowledge the difficulty in that, though. It’s easy enough to cover several players for a few seconds, but it’s much more difficult when Mahomes keeps a play alive three times that long.“Listen, for anything he’s doing right now, he’s done a nice job of being such a young guy,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, “but to have that ability to keep your eyes downfield when you’re outside the pocket is a big thing. Some of that comes natural to him and (our coaches) work with him on it, but a lot of it does come natural, keeping his eyes downfield and being able to throw with accuracy.“That’s a gift Kansas City Chiefs Jerseys 2019 ,” Reid said. “Now, they work on it every day, but he does have a natural gift.”NOTES: Center Mitch Morse (concussion), linebacker Justin Houston (hamstring) and strong safety Eric Berry (heel) remained out of practice Thursday. Free safety Daniel Sorensen continued to work his way back onto the field after he rejoined the team from injured reserve earlier this week.100<button class="view-gallery">View Gallery</button> Gallery:View from the sidelines: NFL cheerleaders 2018Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports | Raj Mehta On-field workouts wrap up on Monday in Indianapolis. Here’s who to watch on NFL Network."Kent - Byron MurphyMurphy’s performance will be a moment of truth for Chiefs fans hoping that his athletic profile may keep the demand on him low enough that Brett Veach can make a move to get him. If he nails the testing this week, optimism that he’ll be available in the early-20s for the Chiefs to reasonably trade up will be low. There are varied perspectives about where Murphy ranks in this class. Some, like us at Arrowhead Pride, consider him a top-15 player. The NFL Advisory Committee gave him a round two grade. You’ll see him mocked anywhere from pick 10 to 35 these days. If he tests well this week, you won’t see his name past 20. Craig - Joejuan WilliamsWhile Deandre Baker’s 40 time might be the difference between pick 20 and pick 35, Joejuan Williams’ 40 time could be the difference between a round-one pick or a round-three pick. A HUGE cornerback with smooth hips and quick feet — atypical for a player of his stature — Williams’ biggest question is his long speed. Williams showed some occurrences of getting beat deep on tape. As a raw prospect that will need some coaching, he’ll need to have minimal holes in his game to go in the first round. Showing that he can run with faster receivers through a good 40-yard dash will go a long way toward cementing him in that conversation.Matt- Justin Layne Justin Layne has been making waves recently in the scouting world as more people dive deeper into his tape and start to fall for his upside. Layne’s a tall, long CB that has fantastic ball skills and whose highlights compare favorably to everyone else. The expectations is for Layne to be a quality athlete, especially in terms of his long speed and explosiveness. If Layne can come out and showcase above-average agility testing with his frame and length, he could boost his draft stock as people continue to fall for his upside. That’s just the tip of the iceberg for Layne, however, as the positional field drills are probably his most important. Showcasing fluid turns and cuts, which are inconsistent film, could help surge him into round-one discussion.SafetyJohnathan Abram #38 of the Mississippi State BulldogsPhoto by Jonathan Bachman/Getty ImagesKent - Jonathan AbramThe Mississippi State safety checked into the Combine at 205 pounds, 10 less than his playing weight in Starkville. Abram slimmed down to test at a high level Infant Rashad Fenton Jersey , and his stock could certainly rise if he performs well.If the Chiefs need a box safety, Abram makes a lot of sense. He’s one of the most fun prospects to watch in this entire class. He’s a tone-setter for defense and isn’t scared of anyone. He’s an ascending player who answered questions about his tackling ability on his final year of college tape. If Abram shows fluidity in his hips and quick feet, you could see Abram sneak into the back end of the first round. Craig - Amani HookerHooker is a highly intelligent football player out of Iowa. His understanding of route distributions, zone awareness and quick play identification make him an easy day one starter on the mental side of things. However, he hasn’t shown himself to be a great athlete, and it shows up in coverage when asked to carry vertical routes. The AP Draft Team currently projects Hooker as a box safety, but he’s not quite the run defender a team would hope for at that level. If he tests well today, Hooker might enter the conversation as a potential deep safety option — and a very high IQ one at that.Matt - Mike BellA bit more of a sleeper player, Mike Bell is a guy who caught my attention during the year, thanks to an ESPN top-10esque interception. His ball skills when playing deep are fantastic and he looks to have a natural feel on the back end. When playing up near the box, he shows aggression and flies up into contact with a good-sized frame. Bell shows the versatility to bounce around both safety positions but has stated he enjoys playing deep the most often because of his ability to see the ball and make big plays on it. The questions looming over Bell are: 1) How fast is he? 2) And can a long frame change direction quickly enough to stick as a deep safety in the NFL? The field drills are worth watching, but he’s a player that could make a splash in the athletic testing portion of the day.
