Rocket League commentary bombed after epic acquisition; steam stepping in

With the news of the acquisition of Psyonix by Epic Games, the popular competitive eSports Rocket League has become the latest victim of comment bombing. Worried that the acquisition meant that the game would be withdrawn from Steam, leading to a series of negative comments on the platform, and Steam deployed a new anti-bombing tool to stop it.

Steam reviews have recently fallen from “very positive” to “mixed”. Players' desire to purchase Rocket League Crates has also dropped rapidly, prompting Steam to implement its tools to exclude "non-subject review activities" from the total score. Negative comments are still visible, they almost universally refer to Epic acquisitions, but they are no longer included in the average.

Concerns about game exclusivity stem from a statement issued by The Verge that mentions that the game will enter the Epic Games store later this year. It said: "In the meantime," it can still be purchased on Steam, and "after" will continue to receive support - said to be through the release of patches and DLC.

This gives the impression that once it appears in the Epic store, it will be pulled out of the Steam store, although it has not been officially announced. The official Rocket League Twitter account posted a vague statement that the game is "still available on Steam" and that existing players can "look for continued support," but not necessarily exclude it from the store on a future date.

Epic Games has developed the habit of acquiring exclusive products for its emerging Steam competitors, and even recently issued a final pass to Steam to increase developer revenue distribution. This led to similar controversies in games such as Metro Exodus and Division 2, but in both of these cases, the switch was officially announced rather than inferred by the player. At the same time, players expressed dissatisfaction with the distribution and acquisition of Rocket League Items. This problem remains to be resolved.

Although Valve is dissatisfied with Epic's aggressive behavior against his store, it has prevented users from reviewing and bombing competition. This is the second most popular case of the tool in the past month. The first one is before this news that the Frontier 3 will be a timed exclusive Epic Games store to stop bombarding past border games for several reviews.
