Path of Exile can be a battle royale game for April Fools' Day (no, really) |
It's April Fools' Day, so don't trust what you read. Most developers is likely to make a throwaway announcement which will make you double take, chuckle for just a few seconds, and after that move on, but Grinding Gear Games moved the whole hog and temporarily transformed its free-to-play action RPG Path of Exile in to a 100-player battle royale game. Seriously.
"Based on community feedback, we're announcing that any of us have abandoned the action RPG genre to pay attention to Buy POE Currency what players would like. Path of Exile has been replaced by Path of Exile: Royale, a 100-person free-for-all battle royale game," it said on its website. It claims so it only took some day of development for making the switch.
Again, this really is legit: my game is updating on Steam as I type this. It'll rename itself inside your library and you may be capable of jump straight in to a round. Just like in other battle royale games, there's an ever-shrinking red zone in order to avoid (the direction on the zone's centre is shown on your own character's feet), even so the Path of Exile-twist is that you will need to fight computer-controlled monsters together with other players. Last one standing turns into a Rhoa Dinner.
Presumably, it'll switch back on Monday. But what happens if the player count skyrockets (no sign of this yet, however it's still early)? Will Grinding Gear make it in POE Items to be a separate game mode? Surely that must be within the back of the group's minds. For now, it seems like a fun change of pace from your normal game, and yes it might be worth diving in in case you have an extra half hour.
