stock down: Giants who are rising and falling With the New York Giants heading

Stock up http://www.giantsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-will-hernandez-jersey , toward their second preseason game, which would put them halfway through the preseason, let’s do a little “stock up/stock down” check on the 90-man roster.Stock upKyle Lauletta What Lauletta’s good game and Davis Webb’s poor one did on Thursday was remind us that Webb’s good play in practice didn’t end the competition to become the backup and potential heir to the throne of Eli Manning. That competition is just getting started. Lauletta, who got a handful of first-team reps during practice on Monday, may have also cracked open the door to competing for the backup role this season.Robert Martin and Jalen Simmons I have no idea if the Giants will end up with room on the roster for at least one of these young running backs, but both showed ability with the ball in their hands vs. Cleveland. Martin, an undrafted free agent from Rutgers, ran five times for 38 Hunter SharpThe wide receiver/return man took all the first-half punt and kickoff returns vs. the Cleveland Browns, and highlighted his evening with a 42-yard kickoff return. The takeaway? Sharp is getting the first opportunity to win the job as the team’s primary return man.John Jerry I still don’t know if the veteran guard makes the 53-man roster. He doesn’t have real positional versatility. He has taken some snaps at right tackle in training camp, but that’s not a spot anyone should want to see him playing during a game that counts. Jerry, though, was solid vs. Cleveland with no pressures allowed in 28 pass-blocking snaps.John GrecoThe 11-year veteran is locked in a competition with Jerry, Zac Kerin and Chris Scott for backup spots on the interior of the offensive line. He showed Thursday that he can still do the job, posting the highest Pro Football Focus grade of any Giants offensive lineman (80.6) in 38 snaps. He allowed no pressures in 28 pass-blocking snaps, and showed versatility by playing both guard and center.Nick Becton A 28-year-old offensive tackle who has not appeared in a regular-season game since 2015, Becton played both right and left tackle vs. Cleveland and allowed no pressures in his 28 pass-blocking snaps. I still believe the Giants will be scouring the waiver wire for a veteran swing tackle, but Becton earned a closer look with his work on Thursday.Kerry WynnThe veteran isn’t really an option as a stand-up outside linebacker in a 3-4. He is also light for a 5-tech defensive end, weighing 265 pounds. Wynn, though, continues to earn his keep as part of the defensive line rotation.Grant Haley The undrafted free agent corner made a pair of nice plays vs. Cleveland, one against the run and one against the pass. In the fight for reserve corrnerback spots, Haley is giving himself a chance.Robert ThomasThe defensive lineman had a sack of Baker Mayfield on Thursday and continued to show why he will likely be part of that defensive line rotation.Avery MossAfter missing the spring while recovering from injury, Moss is showing that he has the skills to be a useful EDGE player. His 89.0 grade in 20 snaps on Thursday was the highest PFF score recorded by a Giants defender.Stock downDavis WebbWebb is still the heavy favorite to be the No. 2 quarterback this season, but much of the positive buzz he generated with solid work in the spring and training camp evaporated into questions with his erratic performance vs. Cleveland. If Lauletta’s stock is up http://www.giantsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-janoris-jenkins-jersey , and it is, Webb’s is down. He needs a bounce-back effort on Friday.Alec OgletreeThere has been a lot of optimism about what Ogletree, acquired via trade from the Los Angeles Rams, would bring to the defense. Well, in just 11 snaps vs Cleveland, Ogletree earned the lowest grade of any Giants defender,a 40.9. Cleveland tight end David Njoku burned him badly for a 36-yard touchdown reception. There is a reason the Rams were willing to part with him. Was Thursday a sign they were rightDarian ThompsonThompson, trying to win the starting free safety job, had only a 45.9 PFF grade on Thursday. He also got hurt, suffering a hamstring injury. Curtis Riley might now have the inside track on that job if he can stay healthy after battling a hamstring issue of his own. Rhett Ellison is never going to step into the New York Giants' lineup at tight end and make people forget Evan Engram. The 29-year-old Ellison is an old-time tight end. He's tough. He's physical. He catches the ball, runs hard and blocks as well.Engram is the more modern version of a tight end. The 23-year old can run like a receiver, break a game open with a catch and help out a little with his blocking, which is not his strongest suit. When the Giants (1-2) face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, Ellison is going to step in for Engram, who sprained his knee last weekend against Houston and is going to be sidelined for a couple of weeks."There's stuff that I can't do that Evan does," Ellison said Thursday before the Giants practiced. "For me, it's just trying to execute the plays and find my role in the play that's called, and try to make a play."Ellison had his best game of the season this past weekend, catching three passes for 39 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown, in a 27-22 win over the Texans.Odell Beckham Jr., who leads the Giants with 24 catches for 271 yards, said all the receivers are going to have to step up to replace Engram, who led the Giants in receiving last season."Rhett http://www.giantsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-connor-barwin-jersey , we call him Mr. Consistent. I do, at least," Beckham said. "He always seems like he's in the right place at the right time, always making the plays, so everybody's got to step up."Ellison has spent a lot of time this week talking with Engram, who had 10 catches for 104 yards and a TD this season."A lot of people sleep on Rhett," Engram said. "He's definitely a teach-tape in the blocking game. The dude is a really good athlete and makes plays in the pass game too. So, no need to give him any speed. He was moving on some plays on Sunday, and I expect him to have a big game this weekend, and through the pass game. I know he's going to take care of his blocks in the run game."Giants coach Pat Shurmur worked with Ellison when both were with the Vikings."I'm fond of Rhett who he is as a player and as a person," Shurmur said. "He epitomizes a player that you want on your team. He's very good at what he does, he can line up anywhere, he finds a way to make plays. Some guys just have a knack for that. He finds a way to make plays. Very trustworthy and very tough, and he's wired like a football player, and that is what you're looking for."Shurmur even equated Ellison's toughness with that of Mark Bavaro, the outstanding tight end who was a member of the Giants' Super Bowl-winning teams after the 1986 and '90 seasons. The comparison was somewhat funny because Bavaro made a name for himself early in his career carrying a half-dozen San Francisco defenders on a 31-yard pass play in the '86 season."One of which was my dad," Ellison said, whose father Riki was a linebacker who played a decade in the NFL. "So, I'm sure my dad is not happy about this comparison."Ellison said he isn't approaching this game any differently than others in his seven-year career. He is spending time with backup tight ends Scott Simonson and rookie Garrett Dickerson to make sure they are up to speed. Engram is working with them, too."He definitely has been picking my brain a lot this year," Engram said of Ellison. "So have I with him in blocking and stuff. I have all the confidence in him. Like I said, I feel like I'm a vet sometimes when that happens. He's like the young kid asking me for help and stuff."NOTES: CB Eli Apple (hamstring) returned to practice on a limited basis. LB Olivier Vernon (ankle) was also limited. DT Damon Harrison (knee), RB Jonathan Stewart (knee) and WR Cody Latimer (knee) missed practice for the second straight day.
