With LeBron James gone, who takes East crown? Cases for (and against) top contenders |
Bold proclamations happen to be flying out with the Eastern Conference this offseason.
The Celtics are definitely appearing out of the East. No, wait — the Wizards are there. Hey, how concerning the Bucks?
Now that LeBron James has his talents to Los Angeles, every contender from the East is aiming to climb the ladder towards the top on the NBA Live Mobile Coins conference. But that has what it takes to arrive at the 2019 NBA Finals?
Let's gaze in to the crystal ball and create a case for (and against) the highest teams...
Raptors
Why they're going to win the East: Kawhi Leonard rediscovers his pre-injury form and receives lots of votes for both MVP and Defensive Player with the Year. Kyle Lowry has another solid campaign, averaging 18 points and seven assists per game while shooting over forty percent from 3-point range. OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam make leaps with bigger roles. The Toronto "Bench Mob" maintains the biggest net rating among reserves.
Why they don't: Leonard plods through the growing season and helps it be clear he's no fascination with re-signing with all the Raptors. Lowry throws out jabs for the front office with anger lingering on the trade of DeMar DeRozan. The young guys glance at the negativity at practice and inside the locker room. New coach Nick Nurse is already around the hot seat in their first season on the helm. Dwane Casey literally sips a cupful of tea at media availability when inquired on Toronto's struggles.
Celtics
Why they may win the East: Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward show no ill-effects from previous injuries with each averaging 20 points per game. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum earn All-Star consideration and take turns running the offense while they gain all the more confidence. Al Horford does Al Horford things. Terry Rozier and Marcus Smart anchor the bench. Semi Ojeleye is adopted by Brad Stevens so he'll accurately call Ojeleye his large adult son.
Why they will not: Another round of injuries bite Boston. Irving becomes frustrated as Brown and Tatum eat more offensive possessions. Hayward just doesn't feel that is comparable to himself and shoots only 41 percent on the field. Horford loses a stride. Stevens drops his after-timeout-plays binder right into a river.
76ers
Why they are going to win the East: Joel Embiid is usually a legitimate MVP candidate, averaging 25 points and 12 rebounds over 72 games. Ben Simmons leads the league in assists and it is willing to require a few midrange jumpers (maybe 3-pointers, too). Dario Saric, Robert Covington and JJ Redick all hit no less than 38 percent of their attempts from after dark arc. Markelle Fultz can shoot the ball without giving the impression of he's assembling an item of IKEA furniture.
Why they don't: A few bumps and bruises keep Embiid from reaching his full potential. With a complete season of tape, opposing teams learn to slow down Simmons, with his fantastic critics yell a bit louder that jumper. All the Fultz stuff remains super weird without any real explanation. Brett Brown loses his accent, which can be charming and wonderful.
Pacers
Why they are going to win the East: Indiana builds over momentum of any surprisingly successful 2017-18 season with Victor Oladipo proving his career year was no fluke. He leads the c's in points, assists and steals. Myles Turner puts it all together in Year 4, posting career-highs in points, rebounds, blocks and 3-point percentage. Tyreke Evans regularly contributes big games off of the bench. Doug McDermott becomes friends with Dylan McDermott... or Dermot Mulroney?
Why they don't: Oladipo's production drops off, particularly his 3-point shooting. Turner's numbers don't look terrible, but he just floats without leaving his imprint around the season. The role guys aren't seeing much improvement under Nate McMillan. Lance Stephenson somehow gets a Western Conference All-Star while using Lakers. (OK, too much. Got it.)
Bucks
Why they are going to win the East: Behind an MVP-caliber season from Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee finally all fits in place as one cohesive unit under Mike Budenholzer. Khris Middleton averages work-high 23 points per game, garnering All-Star buzz. Eric Bledsoe looks a lot more like the guy we saw several years ago rather compared to guy who tweeted "I don't wanna exist." Thon Maker is maintaining growth until he is really as tall to be a regulation hoop, making her the best rim protector inside the league.
Why they will not: Antetokounmpo is terrific, but his not enough progress like a passer allows opposing defenses to collapse on him and deal with big scoring nights. Middleton doesn't find consistency, and his awesome outside shooting hangs around 35 percent. Bledsoe again tweets out "I don't wanna be around," but on this occasion he says he was stuck for a nail salon.
Wizards
Why they're going to win the East: John Wall and Bradley Beal are fully healthy, playing 80 games together and every posting over 20 points per game. Otto Porter Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr. decide to excel about the wing with new career-highs in scoring. Dwight Howard accepts his role to be a pick-and-roll threat on offense and backline anchor on defense. (It took quite a long time, but we have got there!)
Why they will not: Because we all do this every year using the Wizards. And Howard. And it doesn't change.
Final verdict
It's likely likely to be a three-team race using the Celtics, 76ers and Raptors competing for your crown. Toronto is more of the wild-card pick because from the uncertainty surrounding Leonard, and Philly doesn't quite possess the talent head to feet.
Boston has great options at each position, with an elite coach you will never know how to have the most from his players. This Celtics team at full strength could possibly supply the Warriors a good run in the seven-game series, understanding that's why they'll be required to take in the East with James gone.
