Falcons vs. Saints: 3 in-game matchups to watch Another pivotal matchup between two bitter NFC South rivals. Here are three important matchups to watch between the Falcons and the Saints. The legendary Vince Lombardi once stated Womens Desmond Trufant Jersey , “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”That statement fits well with the current state of affairs for the Atlanta Falcons as they enter the third week of the season as injuries abound. Even with the Falcons embarking on this important early-season contest as the walking wounded, there is still enough talent present to get their second win on the season. It will also be their second divisional win, which is huge before the end of the first quarter of the season. Let’s present three critical matchups within the Falcons/Saints battle to closely observe. Falcons linebackers/safeties vs. Saints RB Alvin Kamara It’s arguably the biggest matchup in the entire game. While the Saints have in their arsenal an underrated receiver in Michael Thomas, who has played very well so far this season, it is no secret who is the biggest weapon on offense. Kamara walked away as the Offensive Rookie of the Year last season with 1,554 scrimmage yards and 13 touchdowns. Kamara is a huge threat in the passing and run element for the Saints and is a better version of what the Falcons saw last week in Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey. Without the presence of linebacker Deion Jones, the Falcons are without a superior linebacker in pass defense. So the responsibility falls on linebackers De’Vondre Campbell and Duke Riley, and to an extent the safety combination of Ricardo Allen and Damontae Kazee. Since the Saints do not have the ability to gash defenses with a running quarterback nor a true threat at tight end, the linebackers for Atlanta will have more focus on this great assignment ahead. Brett Davis-USA TODAY SportsFalcons 3rd down defense vs. Saints 3rd down defense l decided to try a little twist here and focus on a certain aspect of the game that has been an issue for both teams through two weeks. On one side, the Falcons are 30th in the NFL in third down defense, allowing a 48.1% conversion rate. In comparison, Atlanta was 17th last season as a top-10 ranked defense, while in 2016, they were 26th. Chalk some of that up to the absence of Jones and strong safety Keanu Neal. For the Saints, they are also in the bottom half of the league in this category, ranking 28th and allowing 48% of the conversions they encounter. The Saints were slightly better against the Browns last week on third down, and some of that is partly because of the type of offense the Saints faced with Cleveland compared to the aerial assault that we have seen from Tampa Bay so far this season. With two high-powered offenses on the field in this duel, third down is going to be incredibly important. Winning this particular component may be a catalyst to a division win here. Falcons QB Matt Ryan vs. Saints pass defense A flat Week 1 performance for quarterback Matt Ryan against the Eagles was erased after his solid outing against Carolina last week. That was a productive and physical defense that Ryan 23-of-28 passes against and now he gets a Saints defense that is 29th overall, 29th against the pass, 32nd in yards per pass attempt, and 23rd in passing touchdowns allowed. In the two games against New Orleans last season, Ryan passed for 509 yards and two touchdowns with four interceptions. In both games, Ryan never really looked like himself in those games, but he did against Carolina last week. The veteran quarterback found rhythm with rookie wideout Calvin Ridley last week and will probably look to continue that task once again as the Saints have allowed the sixth most passes with 21 or more yards of air travel according to Sharp Football Stats. So far, teams are seeing plays unfold against the passing defense of New Orleans and are at least attacking the coverage. Honing in on the dynamic Julio Jones is not necessary with the amount of talent at Ryan’s disposal. Ryan has a vulnerable opponent in front of him Youth Logan Paulsen Jersey , and the opportunity to produce big will likely be present. Unless you’re the Patriots, the NFL playoffs are a carousel where teams hop on and off with each revolution. New teams enter the fray as holdovers drop out of contention. In 2017, eight teams that made the postseason in 2016, including the Packers, Cowboys, and Seahawks, saw their seasons end in Week 17. Meanwhile, teams like the Titans, Bills, Jaguars, and Rams all ended lengthy playoff droughts. There could be more turnover in store for 2018. Buffalo has gone from surprise Wild Card to return to their post-Jim Kelly destiny as an AFC East doormat. Jacksonville’s epic defense has deflated as the Texans returned to the top of the AFC South. Even the defending champion Eagles have struggled, sitting at 4-5 and firmly outside the playoff picture through 10 weeks. But while some of these teams won’t recover (/coughs BILLS /coughs), others have too much talent to languish for long. With seven weeks left in the season, there’s still time for adjustments to be made and division titles (or Wild Card spots) to be won. So who is destined to finish the season on a heater and take some momentum into a return trip to the postseason? We’ve got some candidates. The case for the: Philadelphia EaglesThere are plenty of problems with the Eagles right now. The easiest diagnosis for their issues would be to circle Carson Wentz’s name and then point to everything outside the circle and go “there.” The third-year quarterback is back to the MVP level of play that defined the first three quarters of Philly’s 2017 season — you know, the one that ended with an NFL championship. But everything else is falling apart for Doug Pederson’s team. Jay Ajayi’s injury has taken a bigger toll on the running game than anyone could have imagined. The Eagles rank 22nd in the league in yards per rush (4.1), one season after ranking fourth in the NFL (4.6 ypc). The team’s offensive line problems have extended beyond those run game struggles. Wentz and Nick Foles got sacked on 5.3 percent of their dropbacks last season but 7.4 percent this fall. The absence of injured Timmy Jernigan and Derek Barnett has stripped the team’s pass rush of its extra gear. The good news for the Eagles is that the NFC East remains imminently winnable and, on paper, no team in the division is as talented as Philadelphia. Wentz is completing 71 percent of his passes and has a 15:3 TD:INT ratio. The Eagle defense has allowed fewer than 20 points per game over the last five weeks. All the tools to make a run are there, Pederson just hasn’t figured out how to line them up in 2018.On the other hand, the Eagles’ final seven games include road dates against the Rams and Saints, two dates against East-leading Washington, a showdown with the AFC South-leading Texans, and a Dallas rematch of the Cowboys game they just lost. Is it too late to change my answer? — Christian D’AndreaThe case for the: Green Bay PackersIt’d be tempting to write off the Packers. The Bears are on a roll, winners of three straight and leading the NFC North at 6-3. The Vikings might be even hotter. They’ve won four of their last five games, with their only loss coming to the 9-1 Saints. That doesn’t give the Packers much margin for error.Right now Youth Brandon Fusco Jersey , Green Bay is failing in ways it’s not used to with a healthy (ish) Aaron Rodgers. The 4-5-1 Packers have lost three of their last four and haven’t been able to hold on to leads:Rodgers has mostly done his part — leading two heroic comeback wins this year (including one over the Bears) to account for half of their wins. Mike McCarthy robbed him of a chance of a third against the Seahawks. But he also hasn’t been Aaron Rodgers this year. His stats are more in the Andy Dalton/Matthew Stafford range than the GOAT conversation. Except for interceptions. He still doesn’t throw many of those. And yet, I won’t believe it’s over until Rodgers says it’s over. He may not be telling us to R-E-L-A-X, but he’s also not giving up.The Packers’ issues with the injury bug are still ongoing — Randall Cobb has only appeared in five games, Jimmy Graham has a broken thumb, Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark got banged up against the Seahawks — but this team is not out of it yet. They have a chance to make up ground with rematches against the Vikings and Bears, plus winnable games against the Cardinals, Falcons, Jets, and Lions remaining. The secondary is much better this year. Rodgers is still capable of god-like feats. Maybe Mike McCarthy will listen to Rodgers when he says Aaron Jones needs the ball more. Or OK, maybe the Packers will just go ahead and make Rodgers the player-coach for the rest of the year (we can dream anyway). And while the Packers are 0-5 on the road this season, that might not be such a bad omen, as long as they keep winning at Lambeau. The NFL record for road losses by a team with an overall winning record is six. It’s been done 11 times before, last by the 2016 Houston Texans. Eight of those 11 teams made the playoffs. — Sarah HardyThe case for the: Indianapolis ColtsThe Colts are an interesting team to examine for the rest of the season. They have a legitimate franchise quarterback in Andrew Luck, an ascending offensive line that’s kept Luck clean for the past month, and their defense is capable of playing well in spurts. Right now the Colts are in third place in the AFC South with a record of 4-5. They’re two games behind the first-place Houston Texans, who sit at 6-3. Indianapolis still has two games left against the Titans and one game a piece left against the Jaguars and the Texans — they can still very much win the division if they handle their business in those games.Outside of those division games, they play the Dolphins, Cowboys, and Giants. All three of those games are winnable with the way the Colts are playing football right now. The Colts are on a three-game win streak right now, averaging 36 points per game in that span. Their offense is clicking at just the right time to make a serious push toward the playoffs. Getting past the Texans and the Titans is easier said than done, but this Colts team is equipped to handle those challenges. — Charles McDonaldThere are several other strong candidates for a turnaround. The Atlanta Falcons just got Deion Jones back and Matt Ryan is playing at an MVP level thanks to his dual hammers of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. The Cowboys made a statement by beating the Eagles last week, and the addition of Amari Cooper is beginning to pay dividends. The Ravens boast the league’s No. 2 scoring defense and might actually get better without Joe Flacco in the lineup? So who’s your pick? « Black Brandon Fusco JerseyJosh Johnson Used Madden to Learn His Names of Co-Workers » Weitere Artikel der Kategorie Allgemein |
