MapleStory 2 Closed Beta Preview

Sometimes, the planets align excellent. When I was invited in just for this MapleStory 2 Closed Beta preview, I was sort of side-eyeing the sport with a volume of amused interest already but wasn’t ultimately sure whether or not it would lineup with MapleStory 2 Mesos other Korean MMOs I’ve played; games which are interesting enough but otherwise didn’t hook me.

Maybe, then, some time was right just for this meeting between myself and MapleStory 2 because the game just hits many awesome buttons to me and I’m unsure why. Nor do I desire to ask why.

This is my single entry in the Maple World and I’m glad that I waited on the game, honestly. Not being unfair to its 2D side-scrolling progenitor, nevertheless the isometric 3D layout plus the adorable character designs realized into full 3D models really draw me into the overall game overall and immerse me simply that bit more.

Admittedly, that immersion isn’t terribly deep. The overall story arc of the action does appear to have some almost connection to past events plus some forces of chaos that are seeking to make things all kinds of messed up, nevertheless the window dressing and tonal nature of MapleStory 2 virtually made me that would be that. Normally that’d certainly be a black mark, but everything about MapleStory 2 that I’ve played is definitely so vibrant that I’m more ready to ignore a lackluster narrative.

Basically, this can be like entering a world from your Kirby series in MMORPG form. Sure, you will discover enemies to battle, dungeons to traverse and threats to discover, but they’re all simply so freaking adorable it ends up as being a whimsical romp. Even if I am mowing down enemies that has a chaingun.

If one looks in the adorable verneer of the action, you may easily be forgiven for thinking the sport is hilariously easy. While I’m not planning to claim this really is anything being a white-knuckle challenge, I will point out that combat is definitely as active and engaging each and every ARPG I’ve ever played, requiring careful consideration of my character’s placement and solid use with the abilities I had offered to me.

At least, i thought this was my experience like a Heavy Gunner, anyway. I will admit that I’ve seen Berserkers simply employ a spin-to-win Whirlwind attack and simply cleave through everything, which means that your mileage can vary depending about the class you decide on.

Where the Heavy Gunner and MapleStory 2 excels overall is to use group content. There are dungeons interspersed with the leveling progression and they also’re all fun, quick-hitting and enjoyable romps with interesting enough mechanics or objectives that still maintain a standard lighthearted tone. As a Heavy Gunner, I felt as being a pretty powerful glass cannon solo, but in a very group I was capable of stay at distance, laying consistent, steady damage down while some I enjoyed handled things. It felt great.

The whimsy doesn’t just stop on the enemies or perhaps the color palette, either. There were regions of my quest line which are honestly funny, for instance one from the opening quest objectives that tasked me with getting together again excuses on the Mayor following a lab explosion wrecked part with the town.

There’s also quite a few side activities that carry on piling around the charm such as the relaxed fishing profession, or harvesting, or robust music system that permits you to play various instruments – a process that is already growing exponentially because of downloadable tools that let people convert MIDI files into playable pieces in-game.

And then, certainly, you'll find all the cute things anybody can collect, whether cosmetics or mounts. All of these things combine to provide color with an already very colorful game world, providing an inviting patchwork of things to try and do and dig into that turned into pretty involved.

Granted, I don’t think I’ve dug into all the things that MapleStory 2 provides and you can find a couple of sticking points. I actively avoided Mushking Royale, the experience’s battle royale mode, mainly because I’m not really a fan of the sport type. Also, if I’m to believe a number of the custom-made billboards as well as other things folk have created from the game, PvP is definitely an absolute mess. To those points, I’d advise anyone scanning this to dig deeper into those aspects of the experience.

There is usually the potential brick wall of the experience’s chibi art style, which often can admittedly be considered a bit unnerving for the few in the character designs. Honestly, that’s a visual thing that nothing I write here will vary hearts and minds about.

That all said, there is much more I want to understand more about. I really wish to dig in to the end game. I desire to see what type of progression or grind waits for the top. I desire to really dig in to the crafting systems a lttle bit more. I wish to see what rewarding and abilities I unlock. Basically, I need to visit our planet again and again.

Like I said before, possibly the timing was the thing which is making MapleStory 2 sink its hooks in. I’m flanked by games where there’s another factional war or last-person-standing battleground or some other setting that can itself just a lttle bit too dreadfully seriously. The swaths of adorable design and happy colors of MapleStory 2, in comparison, can be a gust of oxygen for me.

MapleStory 2 has fast turn into a favorite pastime, regardless of whether it’s not only a remarkable world. It’s a warm cup a joe after having to drink soda forever. It’s charming, it’s colorful, and it also just wants that you have fun in the technicolor world. I can’t set out to tell you simply how much that aligns with my interests.
