NEW DELHI Alessandro Guarnone Jersey , May 20 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and 15 others suffered burn injuries on Saturday after a passenger bus caught fire in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The bus caught fire after ramming into an electric pole, following which a high tension wire fell on it in Banda district, about 197 km south of Lucknow city, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

""Today a passenger caught fire at Jaspura area of Banda district after a high tension wire fell on it. The wire snapped as the bus hit the electric pole,"" a police official said. ""Four people were burnt alive while 15 others were injured.""

Following the incidents locals rushed to the spot to rescue passengers and simultaneously informed police and fire service officials.

""The injured were taken in ambulances to the hospital, where the condition of some of them is stated to be critical,"" the official said.

Police said the bus was going from Banda to Hamirpur.

""The fire was so fierce that it was difficult for the villagers to evacuate the injured passengers from the bus,"" a local resident said. ""The situation aggravated as fire fighters reached the spot bit late.""

Preliminary investigations carried out by the police said the mishap took place when the driver lost control of the bus and hit the electric pole.

MOMBASA, Kenya, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President UhuruKenyatta on Wednesday launched the passenger train service of the480-km Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), paving way forthe nation's endeavor for industrialization and prosperity.

Terming it as ""a new chapter"" in the history of Kenya, thepresident said the modern railway will replace the meter gaugerailway that was constructed more than 100 years ago during theBritish colonial rule.

""Today we celebrate the laying of one of the key cornerstones toKenya's journey of transformation to an industrial, prosperous andmiddle-income country,"" he said ahead of embarking on the inauguraltrip from Mombasa to Nairobi.

The launch came one day after the Kenyan leader launched thefirst SGR cargo service between the two cities.

Kenyatta said that the SGR was made possible due to the closeSino-Kenya friendship.

""I want to thank our partner and true friend China for thesupport that has enabled the construction and completion of theproject after only two and a half years,"" he said.

The 3.8-billion-U.S.-dollar infrastructure project wasconstructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, with 90percent of the funding coming from China.

Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong, who attended the launchingceremony as the special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping, saidthe Mombasa-Nairobi railway has been an early fruit that came outof the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum onChina-Africa Cooperation summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa,in late 2015.

""The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR is an exemplary project of China-Africacooperation on the construction of roads, railways, aviationnetworks and industrialization,"" Wang said, adding that the SGRwill bear great significance in boosting the development in Kenyaand the region, speeding up Africa's industrialization process, andexpanding the reach of the Belt and Road to more Africancountries.

""China stands ready to work with Kenya to make theMombasa-Nairobi railway become a railway of prosperity anddevelopment for Kenya, and a new example of the transformation andupgrade of China-Africa cooperation,"" said Wang.

Welcoming passengers who are ready to board the inaugural train,Angela Obunga, a Mombasa West Railway Station staff, said she ishappy with her new job for passenger service at the station as thenew railway is launched.

""It is good for Kenya because it will now have an efficienttrain service plying the Nairobi Mombasa route. Transportationbetween the two cities will be more reliable and convenient,"" shesaid.

The SGR, providing both cargo and passenger transport services,will cut dramatically the time and costs for the movement of goodsand people. It is expected to reduce the time for a passengertraveling from Mombasa to Nairobi to merely four and a half hourscompared to nearly 10 hours on bus. Time to transport cargo fromMombasa to Nairobi, meanwhile, will also decrease from two days toeight hours.

Edward Ngugi, another SGR passenger service clerk, said thecommissioning of the SGR will mean less congestion on theNairobi-Mombasa highway. Public expenditure on the maintenance ofthe road will also reduce due to less wear and tear as people willbegin favoring railways to transport goods. Enditem
